Legume Hays Stand at Fore
front in Feeding Value.
Not Only la Timothy Unpalatable to
Animals, but It Causes Serious
Cases of Constipation Much
Grain Is Saved.
(Prepared by the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture.)
By using the right kind of hay In
stead of grain, sheep can be wintered
succesfully nnd much grain saved for
other purposes. Sheep require less
concentrated feed during the winter
than other live stock. If they are
In good condition at the beginning of
the winter and If Ittrahs nre not ex
pected before the spring pnstures come
on, the gralnless ration Is to be ad
vised. Legume hays stand at the forefront
as a roughage for sheep. No other
roughages approach them In feeding
values. The coarse-stemmed hnys,
like timothy, red top and blue grass
have very few leaves ond therefore
are poor sheep feeds. Hays having
a large amount of timothy In them also
are undesirable. Not only la timo
thy unpalntablo to the sheep, but It
causes serious cases of constipation.
The dry timothy heads work Into the
wool, causing Irritation to the skin,
lessening the value of the clip and
making shearing difficult. Wlien tlm
otby or other course-stemmed hny Is
fed to sheep In winter quurters It be
comes necessary to use some supple
mentary feed to keep the sheep In condition.
If any nonlegume hay Is fed, sup
plementary protein feed Is needed. Lin
seed meal Is good slnco In addition to
furnishing protein It counteracts the
constipating effect of timothy hay.
From one-quarter to one-half pound
of linseed meal per ewe dully should
he used, depending on the slzo and
condition of the animal and the other
feed used.
In an experiment conducted at the
Missouri stntlon nnd reported In bul
letin No. 120, the relative values of
clover nnd timothy hays for wintering
ewes were determined.
Fifteen ewes fed 2.9 pounds timothy
hay and 0.35 pounds grain per head
dally lost 7.0 pounds each during the
same time that another lot receiving
tho snme weight of grain nnd clover
hay gained 0.5 pounds, The 14 ewes
fed clover huy dropped 10 strong
lambs, while those fed timothy drop
lied 11 strong nnd f weak lambs.
rhe lambs from the owes fed clover
hny gained more rapidly during the
Ilrst 80 days than did those from the
ewes fed timothy hay.

BEST PLACE FOR SEED CORN
Well Ventilated Room With Artificial
Heat, If Needed, Should Be Had
for Curing.
Word Is being sent to the farmers
of Minnesota to take special pains In
drying and storing their seed corn this
full. C. P. Bull, university farm, St.
Paul, secretary of the state commit
tee of food production and conserva
tion, says:
"The amount of moisture to be re
moved from the corn this fall Is larger
than usunl. A well ventilated room
with artificial heat, if needed, should
be provided for curing. Care should
be taken, however, not to dry the
corn too rapidly. The temperature of
tho drying room should be kept some
where between 00 and 70 degrees. The
ears should be hung up by the double
string method or should be put on
hangers or trees; It should not be
dumped in u pile In a bin.
"A double allowance, if it can be
had, should bo saved, In order to ud
mlt of n more rigid selection next
spring.
"Tho present indications are thut
there will be u good demand for seed

LAYING HENS REQUIRE LIME
Shell Forming Material Necessary in
Egg Production Oyster Shell
Most Suitable.
Lime for shell-forming material Is
necessary In egg production. Some
Idea of the extent of the need Is ob
tained from the fact thut an average
llock of 1,10 hens will produce 137
pounds of egg shells In a year. The
grains fed supply a portion of this
lime, but the supply is too small lu
proportion to the number of eggs u
lieu should be able to produce.
Oyster shell Is most suitable for
shell making. Old plaster may be used
as a substitute. Egg shell may be
saved, broken up fine and fed. Dry
bones may bo broken up nnd fed. Tho
habit of egg eating often is caused
by a lack of shell-forming food.

Says Corns Lift Out
Without Any Pain
You reckless men and women who
are pestered w'th corns and who have
at least once a week Invited an awful
death from lockjaw or blood poison
are now told by a Cincinnati authority
to use a drug called freeione, which
the moment a few drops are applied
to any corn or callous the soreness is
relieved and soon the entire corn or
callous, root and all, lift off with the
fingers.
Freeione dries the moment it is ap
plied, and simply shrivels the corn or
callous without inflaming or even ir
ritating the surrounding tissue or
skin. A small bottle ot freeione will
cost very little at any ot the drug
stores, but will positively rid one's
feet of every hard or soft corn or
hardened callous. If your druggist
hasn't any freeione he can get It at

Change entire style of dress If you

not have skirt too short or too long.
Practical skirts for women are five to
six inches from floor. If garment can

Most all garments should be mended
before cleaning or laundrylng. Mend
ng tissues helps out wonderfully In
mending of woolen clothes. This Is
used after garment Is cleaned. All
patches should be faded the same color
as garment before using. Use strong
net in mending stockings. The bars
are easy to follow in making darning
stitch.
Many old garments can be made new
again by changing the color. Always
follow the directions found on pack
age of dye for these are the best. Get
dye to suit kind of material. Never
fry to dye cotton material with dye
for woolen material. Always use the
amount of salt called for when dyeing
"otton garments. The salt sets the
dye. Old gingham aprons and dresses
which have faded may be dyed a dark
blue. These Iron nicely and look like
new. Never try to dye a dark material
a light shade for this cannot be ac

Cleanliness a Primary
Requisite of the Navy,
As Health Is Paramount
Cleanliness is the god of the navy.
A man boy, rather since he is
commonly under twenty-one ar
rives at Great Lakes by the noon train
and goes Into the detention camp. He
Is lined up with 40 or a hundred oth
ers and his baggage examined. Cig
arettes, knives, whisky, firearms any
thing he might hurt himself or his
neighbor with are confiscated. Then
he has a hot bath nnd clean clothes.
In the days that follow he goes to the
dentist nnd has his mouth put in
shape, Collier says. He goes to the
doctor und is vaccinated, Inoculated,
tested. He Is given $90 worth of new
clothes three suits of white clothes,
two suits of serge clothes, three suits
of underwear, stockings, shoes, hand
kerchiefs, caps, dunnage bag every
thing stenciled In two places with his

HANDLING POULTRY
IN WINTER
MMMM)
Many successful men and several
experiment stations are satisfied that
free range the year around, regardless
of snow, rain, wind and cold, develops
such a hardiness in fowls that they lay
better than when kept in confinement,
and that birds become accustomed to
exposure and hardships, and that wal
lowing about In a foot of Bnow part of
the day Is Just as good exercise as
scratching In dry litter In a comfort
able house and results In better profits.
There seems to be no data available
on the method of handling fowls In
winter as compared with close confine
ment, but poultrymen should adopt
either one system or the other. To al
low the fowls the freedom of the yard
some days and keep them confined at
other times is not conducive to the
best results In egg production. Hens
are creatures of habit to such an ex
tent that If a flock of birds Is removed
from unsanitary, crowded quarters to
a modern, well-equipped, properly ven
tilated house they are more than
likely to fall off In their egg production
for several weeks, not because the
change is not for the better, but be
cause it Is something different.
A frequent change from confinement
to range and from range to confine
ment, though It may be for the com
fort and best interest of the fowls in
the Judgment of the caretaker, will so
disturb the fowls that they will not
know whether they are going out or
staying In, and because of the perver
sity of hen nature they will want to do
Just what they cannot do and their
nervous systems will be sufficiently
disorganized to Interfere with the
proper functioning of the egg organs.
To the average person this statement
will undoubtedly seem far-fetched
when applied to an animal of such low
mentality as is ascribed to the hen,
but practical poultrymen know how
hard it is to encourage their fowls to
lay during the winter and how easily
they quit.
