TRACTORS CAN DO FOB FARMKRH. Transformation of farming through the agency of gasoline is the revolu tionizing evolution which is now ex pected. Gasoline may yet change farming from an w-upation to a pro fession, influence society a the tele phone and trolley have done and put the possibility of famine out of human conaideration. The New York Times contains a dis cuasion of these possibilities by Ed ward A. Bradford. He considers time and tractors the pith and marrow of the problem of growing enough foodstuffs. The war would seem to him to have had only secondary ftonseuuences for agriculture and the threat of famine for the world 4i be owing to other causes than war. During the first two years of this war the United States, according to Mr. Bradford, produced more food than it consumed and exported 71 per cent more. Food riots and other tokens of shortage in food were caused not by failure in crops, but by foreign governments buying in American mar kets. The foreigners drew on their capital to supply their demands, and outdistanced Americans buying by means of income. The means of meeting the demand appears to Mr. Bradford to consist in mir farmers replacing ox or horse with the tractor, which is the plow and au tomobile in one. In France and Eng In:,'! farm help is so scarce that the governments are calling for 4000 tractors to do the work of MM by machinery. It follows that, if trar tors will help solve the farming pro blem in war, they can do ao in peace. Speaking of wastage in using ani mals, Mr. Bradford argues that it. takes more land to support mule or horse than man, five acres against three. Under the very sha low of Vimy ridge a great game was played before an all klniki audience on a bit of the battle field on which the shell holes had been filled in and a rough grand stand erect ed for the oflicers and other apectators. The game was between teams rep resenting two Canadian brigudea. In fact, all tho teams in what may be called tin) World War League re now composed of representatives of the numerous Canadian bodies, and all the players are anxiously awniting the arrival of the American forces to ar range for an interleague series. The second Canadian brigade beat the third by the acore of 7 to 1. The second brigade had a great left handed pitcher whose delivery the third brig rndc batters could not solve at all. The third brigatle team also had a good luixmnn, who formerly played with Attawa In the Canadian league. The catcher was unable to hold his delivery well, and thia fault accounted for many of thu runs scored by the winning side. The game was remarkably free from errors, considering the battlefield dia mond on which it waa played. All the equipment had been brought from Ami nea, including the base bags. As a sideshow it was possible from the grandstand to see an nccasl nal Ger man shell dropping half a mile or ao awny. Airplanes were humming over head but assuming them to be friendly no one looked their way except when a lly luill happened to be hit.
