"Billy" Sunday, the former baseball player who has conducted evangelistic meetings in almost every part of the country, has succeeded, he thinks, in reducing the saving of souls to a businesslike basis. He has gone so far as to "make an estimate of the cost of soul-saving in various cities. In Mr. Sunday's cost sheet, Indianap olis souls come highest, at $620 each. New York City souls are quoted at $545, while in Boston they can be ob tained for $545. Other quotations are Denver, $425, Chicago, $395, and New Orleans $78. - So far as Mr. Sunday has made in vestigations, souls came cheapest in Atlanta, where they - may be saved for $75 a head if souls have heads. ."Billy" Sunday's figures - have aroused much mystification and con siderable adverse criticism. Atlantans complain because souls are so cheap, and Indianapolis people because they are so dear. The general impression seems to be that "Billy" acquired the percentage habit in his baseball days and hasn't been able to shake it off Success Magazine. Sim 1 W A DIGGING THE OZARKS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS SQUAN DERED IN SEARCH FOR GOLD." Charts In Possession of Mexicans In dlcate Where $80,000,000 May Be Found In-Red Hills of Arkansas. Hot Springs, Ark. No quest for a bag of gold at the end of a-rainbow was ever bo eagerly pursued as Is the hunt for the lost Spanish silver mine in Arkansas, today.' Thousands of dollars are being squandered, and It is not the dreamers, the illiterate or the soldiers of fortune who lead the rain search for 180,000,000. but bankers, wealthy planters and even United States senators are interested'. Mysterious charts in the possession of Mexicans furnish the foundation for the .lure of the phantom sliver and so much has been discovered that the most skeptical, after looking upon the excavations at Redding in the Ozark mountains, is forced to confess there will probably be disclosures of treas ures before the work is completed. For 15 years excavations bave been under way at the Redding hillside. Mil lions of cubic yards of earth have been removed, but the entrance to the vault which Is supposed to contain the hid den treasure has not yet been reached. Two skeletons which are said to be the remains of a man and woman who were killed in the trench leading to the vault have been found. A piece of black quartz, entirely foreign to Ar kansas, was also discovered as an other guide to the vault Now Mexi cans declare charts in their possession indicate that a dozen more skeletons will be found near the entrance of the vault, these of men who assisted in closing the vault and then refused to take an oath of secrecy. At one time the Mexican government offered a reward of $20,000,000 for the discov ery of the hidden treasure which is still a stimulus to greater -effort in tearing down the red hills of Arkan sas. Twenty-five years ago Mexicans used to camp each year near the red hills and frequentlylow blasts were heard. It is believed they may have carried away the treasure years ago and are now profiting by the ignor ance of Americans. Almost every kind of relic In the way of ornament, flint weapon or earthern cooking utensil has hen un earthed by the diggers, but the only implement which could have been used in excavating so far discovered has been a bar of iron somewhat re sembling a crowbar. RAID ON WOMEN GAMBLERS Fashionable Resort In Minneapolis, Minn., Closed When Husbands Complain of Wives' Losses. Minneapolis, Minn. An ultra-fashionable gambling house, like those con ducted in frontier days, has been closed by the police, after running for several weeks, during which time hun dreds of women have squandered their money in the place. A society woman ran it - The street in front of the house was constantly lined with limousines and town cars of the rich women of Min neapolis. All sorts of games : were played, so the police, say. The clos ing of the house was brought about by the wrath of a well to do grocer of the city, who discovered that his wife had lost considerable money there. '" .. . ' The husband said his wife was mak ing inroads on the family funds to such an extent that be was unable to meet his bills. He said he had heard that other women players were doing the like and their husbands were com plaining. He declared his wife had lost as much as $70 in a single sitting. He said that when the card games were over the women were invited to buy tickets that entitled them in a chance in raffles of hand-painted china or other goods. Souvenir Presented to PresidentvTaft Has Ancient Origin. ., V President Taft has among the sou venirs of his Western trip a cane cut from a stump which scientists declare was a tree before the glacial period. The wood was found fa the valley of the south fork of the Old Man river in the southern part of the province of Alberta by Professor W. S. Foster, a geologist and explorer, living in Spo kane. The cane, which is valued at $5,000, was presented by Elwin T. Coman, president of the chamber of commerce, on behalf of the people of Spokane. "The stump, which stood in a peat bed, was found beneath 60 feet of glacial wash," said Professor Foster, giving a history of the discovery, "and preserved to the present day by one of the wonderful freaks of nature. The peat from which the stump was taken, is on a sandstone formation and is about three feet in thickness. Sea weeds and flag stocks found nearby are also well preserved. - . "This peat bed was uncovered by the wearing away of the glacial wash by floods and the flow of the Old Man river. There is not the least ques tion in my mind that the tree grew before the glacial period, more than 250,000 years ago. but far I have not been able to ascertain the kind of wood it is. "The discovery was made not long ago in the Frank district, which is 250 miles north of Spokane and fully 400 miles east of the Pacific ocean. The presence of well-preserved seaweed and flagstock in abundance, buried un der 60 feet of glacial deposit, appears to be sufficient proof of its antiquity, though I have much other evidence of scientific character to bear out all of my assertions. - . "More than that I am ' prepared to satisfy anyone posted or. such things by showing them the stump from which the wood was cut, also the formation in which the discovery , was made."
