DEC. 2... ....1911 The Oregon Jonrnal strenuously as serts that Governor West "is not trimmer," whatever tuat means, and that be "is not an artful dodger,' and we know what that means. Tbe Portland paper makes these assertions in an editorial wbiob sustains the ' Governor in bis oSioial stand against oapital pnnisbmentt. Now, every one who reads, knows where tbe governor stands on tbe question of capital pan ishment, tbe knowledge having been repeatedly Impressed upon tbe pnblio mind ever eiuoe Mr. West has been covemor of the state. Id this stand taken by tbe Governor, be has un doubtedly exhibited a dyed-in-the-wool brand of stamina that will re ceive commendation from a human itarian ttandpoint, even though tbe question of whetber or not his aotion In ahnliflbini? capital punisbmeuP in j this state so long as he is governor, may be an incentive to committing capital crime, rather than curtail it. . fiats off to hnmanitarianism and all it stands for, so long as it does not in fringe on the code of justice "to tbe murdered viotim, impartially and fairly decreed upon tbe murderer found guilt of the orime. "But," asks cbe Journal, "have hangings stopped the murders or have tbey, ty setting tbe example in killing, aotually en couraged murder?. Is tbore one proof in the world that an advooate of bang ing can hring, to establish that hang ings deorease murders?" Tbe fallaoy of tbe argument to whioh the Jour nal's question lends itself is shown by tbe persistence with which all crim inals convioted of murder ia the first degree seek commutation of the death sentenoe to life Imprisonment. . The several railroads running through tbe western oonnties of Kan sas have offered to transport aeed wheat to tbe farmers there free of charge in order to help tbem ont of tbe straits into which tbey have been forced as a result of tbe protraoted drought As a further aid bankers and others are loaning on easy terms money with which the seed wheat may be pnrobased. pnblioatioD will be made on Friday, January 12tb, 1912. . An Iowa paper is of tbe opinion that tbe Hawkeys state la capable of rais in just as good apples as any state in tbe lUnion, Oregon and Washington tfxoepted. The paper in question, the Montezuma Palladium, says tbe state agricultural college at Ames bag taken bold of tbe matter of oonvino ing Iowa people that they can raise apples, and with this object in view an apple show is to be held in Des Moines next month. In connection with the olaimB made, by tbe Iowa paper, it is interesting to note tbat tbe services of "an expert paoker from the famous Hood River territory, has ' been secured to pot the fruit in shape as to quality and attractive display." canvass of tbe state is being made for "exhibits of No. 1 apples" wbiob are to be classified by tbe expert aud turned over to the Iowa Horticultural Society whioh will display it tit Des Moiuea "for all tbe world to see what Iowa oau do iu the apple line." It is doubtful if our Iowa exobsnge would ant on the suggestion, but if the Hawkeye people want to see the Ren nine artiole in tbe "apple line," just for the sake of comparison, a display of tbe Oregon produot would certain ly out some swath at the Dos Moines Bhow. Old Iowa is all tight for corn and hogs brother but we'vo got you eklnnedaoity blook on apple produc tion aud you can uevor oatcb up. Mil lions in Iowa money has teen expeuded in tbe Northwest apple traots already and there are millions more yet to be spent, for lowaus know a good thing when they see it. A GAME OF BRIDGE. John W. "How much a point do you play?" asked the newcomer. "Fifty," said Gates. "I can't afford it," was the rejoinder. "Twenty-five is a big game for me." "Well, make up the rubber," said Gates disappointedly. "We'll play for twenty-flve." The young man played well, had luck and won. "Wo have a sort of clearing house here," said Gates when the game end ed. "I'll send you your check in the morning." The young man got a check for $13,- 000. Astounded, he took it to the signer. "What docs this mean?" he asked. "I circulated that I won $130. We were playing for 25 cents a point, weren't we?" "We were ploying for $23 a point," returned Gates. "Wha-at! Why, if I'd lost I couldn't have paid." "If you hadn't paid we'd have run you out of the city," said Gates coldly. "But you won. Cash that check." It was cashed.. New York Tribune.
