Tho American people onco elected a tailor to tho presidency, and doubt less many manipulators of tho shears and gooso have snt iu tho scats of the mighty by election, but only once did a tailor make himself at homo on the floor of the United States senate when ho had no constituency to represent. The tailor was Hermann Morltz Rledcl of Philadelphia, who visited Washington in April, 1SGS, to attend tho exciting scenes during the im peachment proceedings against An drew Johnson, a fellow craftsman. And this is tho account of how ho witnessed these proceedings as pub lished Iu tho Washington Republican of that day: "A good looking Teutonic friend of ours n day or two since made an ear nest appeal to our Muggins for a tick et to the senato to listen to what was going forward at tho impeachment trial. Muggins, ns is his wont, in the kindness of his soul consented to fur nish Teutou with tho tallsiuaulc paste board which effects the open sesame to the senate chamber and also assured fur friend that ho would accompany Urn to the gallery and (lud him an eligible scat. Muggins and Teuton started to work their way iu, but Mug gins was detalued outside of the door for a few moments, and our German friend went on aud passed tho vigilant sentinels at tho outer door and went directly to the entrance of tho senato chamber aud was admitted by the geutlemauly ushers under tho belief probably that ho was n member of congress and passed through tho vesti bule aud took his seat in the tlrst va cant chair and thero remained during tho eutlre sesslou in tho conlldent be lief that ho was entitled to the scat." The descendants of Hermann Kiodel nro living In Wasulugtou now. The tailor, who va3 a "top notchor" nt his trade, according to all accouuts, died in 1S77, having declined a pension after serving as a marine during the civil war. Washington Post. Oack Numbers. "William," said Mrs. Van Geldcr to the man of nil work. "I want you to clean out that large closet in tho hall just outside the parlor. Bum all the old newspapers, waste paper and any other rubbixh you may And there." After a nhort time she met William In tho hull carrying In his arms a huge pile of shoot music, the property of her eldest daughter. "What are you going to do with Ma bcl's music?" she asked. "Why, burn It. Eure, as you told me to. It was In the closet there with the other rubbish." "But I didn't moan tho music. Tut it back nt once." Noting his mistress' displeasure, Wll Ham inquired In surprise: "Why, hasn't she played it all?" Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot. Do Tocqueville. THE DEER'S HORNS. fhey ""Present All ths Phenomena of Animal and Vegeijbls Growth. It pre sent all the phenomena of animal and vegetable growth. It sprouts from the bruin without any prolongation of the fi-onml bone. It M nourished by and secretes albumen npou the surface and disposes of the tibrtn the same ns an animal. It Is clothed with a skin and hairy coat very different from those on the rest of i he body. This covering and hair possess a property unknown in other animal bodies that of being a styptic to stanch Its own blood when wounded. It carries marks of the age on the buck by putting out an extra branch each year, which shows an ad ditional power each year to produce them. And this power does not exist in the female. So this difference la more distinctly marked than in any other class of animals. Again, the horn possesses properties unknown in any other animal matter. It Is entirely in odorous, capable of resisting putrefac tion and almost Impervious to tho ef fects of the atmosphere. And still water at 300 degrees F. will dissolve these horns readily, even though tbey are not soluble in alcohol and resist the action of acids and alka lis. It Is the only vegcto animal sub stance that we know of that does not perpetuate itself by procreation. The male and the female are sus tained by the same nutrition and ele ments, and only the male produces horns. This phenomenon is quite as much of a cariosity as the absence of the horn in the buck after shedding Young Girls are Victims, of headache, as well as older women, but all get quiok relief and prompt cure from Dr. King's Life Pills, the world's best remedy for siok. and nervous headaches.
