ORE.. JUNE 18 ...... . 1909 S. W. Itotb, editor of tbe Retailers' Jonroal, of Chicago, was one of the speakers before the retail grooers at Davenport Iowa, last week. He plead ed with tbe retailers to use tbe news papers of their home cities more gen erously than they have been doing. "See what tbe mail order booses and dupaitment stores are doing in tbe way of advertising," Mr. Both said. "The Retailers are building np tbe mail order booses by their negligenoe. They are building np the business that is right at their own doors for tbe mail order booses. The narrowness that exists among retailers is dne to the fact that everyone is afraid to help tbe other man. My position is that it is without helping yourself. Tbe way to oontrol tbe home trade and prevent it going to tbe large centers is to nse tbe home newspaper; to advertise not one day, bnt every day." Tbe Masonio lodges of Boston and Woroester and a few other in various parts of Massachusetts are to reoeive charts of King Solomon's Temple at Jerusalem. .Tbe charts will be pre sented to tbe lodges through tbe Bos ton Herald. Tbey are gifts of Mrs. Aaron Morley Wilcox of Washington. Mrs. Wilcox presents tbe charts be-' cause of a movement in Massachusetts looking to the restoration of the an cient temple at Jerusalem and in plao ing tbe charts with tbe Herald for presentation to the lodges in memory of her husband Mrs. Wilcox expresses tbe hope tbat tbe temple may at some time be restored to its original form. Tbe Farmer's Union is an organiza tion that is increasing all over tbe state. Eastern Oregou will be organ ized this sptlng and in the fall West ern Oregon will be drawn in line. This organization has peonliar and business-like methods of proceeding, and claims to have busted the cottcn trusts in tbe Sontb. It has already ac complished marked consideration from tbe railroads in Washington, and is an organization tbat is making tbe various forms of graft and imposition fastened on tbe farmers sit up and take notice. Evangelist Dan Shannon, in his farewell sermon at Hood Elver, is said to have sooted sonndly the people of the apple town, the press and the offi cials as grafters and mercenaries. Sinoe the collections taken up for pro claiming salvation "free" bad, during his stay, aggregated $1000, he may be snid to have committed tbat unseemly break of courtesy described as "look ing a gift horse iu He mouth." " under the auspioes of tbe State Board of Geology a complete survey of the deforested lands in Washington will be made this summer. The ap propriation made by the last legisla ture for tbe geolistio board was 30, 000, out of which tbe sum of $5,000 has keen set aside for this purpose. The work will be directed by Piof. Landee, state geologist. At bis solici tation a carefnl study of the state's oement resources will also be made. Tbisis tbe time of jear whea.be oaose of reenrring national anniver saries we hear a great deal of talk abont being ready to die for one's oonntry. Fortunately there is co de mand now for tbat saorifloe, but to live for one's oouutry is always in or der. Tbat is best done by obedience to its laws, reverenoe for its Institu tions, tbe cheerful performance of the duties of citizenship and a olean. up right and useful life. Twenty-one divoroes were granted in one day by tbe Spokane county sup erior oourt. rt would help these matters immensely if tbe state could stop tbe oourting of a lot of people be fore it gets to the matrimonial stage, and tbns prevent all this troublesome oourting tbe state for divorce. A scientist says tbe day is coming when it will be possible to foretell earthquakes. Good. Tbat will give us a ohanoe to make nse of our airship and get off tbe earth till tbe trouble is over. The Rev. Mr. Garmiobael made it easy for tbe medical fraternity to dis cover that he was insane. Had his case been left to expert witnesses there would always have remained a doubt. In Oregon tbe ten-inoh hat pin is to be the limit, but as few mashers will care to have even teu inobes of pin jabbed into their anatomy, tbe limit will doubtless be a plenty. This oountry has made such progress in tbe way of furnishing briok and stuooo bouses tbat we shall probably never have another president who was born in a log cabin. A Boston woman, we are told has "embraoed twenty-three different re ligions." It maybe tbat up to tbe present time she has not found auy tbat reoiprooated. If Roosevelt becomes tbe head of the world's conservation congress, the problem of what to do with our ex Presidents will be very satisfactorily solved. Aunt Carrie Nation smashed a Lon don tobaooonist's window and was let off with a small One. Aunt Carrie has had hard work making a martyr of herself. Another ingenious has sprung into fame by inventing an egg beater wbioh can also be used as an ice cream freez er aud oburn. Wonderful age, is this. The dootors having discovered a man who has two hearts, the question has been raised whether he is now en titled to two wives. Sousa announces tbat ragtime rdosio is dead. If so it has left a very active ghost to coutinue tbe disturbance. Learn a lesson in modesty by study ing the character of John R. Biuns, the young Marconi hero. Senator Tillman is aooused, also, of overworking his forking privilege. Strayed from my plaoe north of Athena, one brown filly, 3 years old; one blaok yearling filly with one white hind foot.
