Newspaper Page TextCURTIS SUCCESSFUL FARMER Up In The Palouse His Farm Products Are Diversified Brief mention was made in the last weeks Press of the success Herman II. Curtis is meeting with in the Palouse country at diversifled farming. Mr. Curtis.'who was formerly engaged in the lumber business at Athena, located on a farm near Pullman, Wash, three or four years ago, since whioh time be Las eiven his attention to diversified farming Mr. Curtis bas just completed fenc ing his farm with bog wire and next year will begin on the new plan. In stead of summer fallowing part of bis land as be bas in the past be will ro tate with crops of grain, alfalfa clover corn and peas and other leguminous and nitrogen gathering plants. Instead of taming off so much wheat each year he will turn off bogs and cattle. Iu this way the soil will beoome richer each year instead of poorer. With bis bogs Mr. Curtis plana to run them on alfalfa through the months of May. June, July and August, feeding them with grain onoe a day to keep tbem growing. After the pasture is dry be will turn tbem into fields of peas, top ping them off with corn. With the hogs and beef cattle be will oontinue bis dairy which is most suooessful. At present he is milking nine cows from whioh be secures 23 gallons a day. This bo sells at the oollege dormitories for 25 cents a gallon bringing $5.50 a day or $165 per mo. Mr. Curtis' caws are of the Jersey strain. They are abova the average, testing 4.6 per cent. All are fresh iu the fall to secure plenty of milk through the winter. He feeds alfalfa bay wit b a light feed of bran, the latter coating about 50 oents a day for the niue. A Horrible Hold-Up. The Oregon Agricultural College bas inaugurated a system of press bulletins whioh is sent to the papers of the state weekly: The one received this week appears telow: During the butohering season of the year the Experiment Station frequently receives specimens of pork that present an unmarketable appearance. The rind, or skin, taken from the abdomi nal region aud- inside of the legs, is found to be dotted with black wart like growths of various sizes ranging from (bat of a pin-head to a hazelnut. Many of these spots in the early stages contain a small amount of pns, and by careful examination a small mite will be- found buried deeply iu the skin. The mite causing these pustules and subsequent black spots is known as - a i.i; 1 . uemouex iumouiurum varsuis, a very large name for suoh a small mite that may be seen only by aid of a magnify ing glass. Just when the mite attacks the bog is not well known, and as it burrows deeply into the skin, treatment or the use of inseotioides is of little value; besides there is no indication of its presence until the time of butchering, when the damage is already done. These blackened spots,-although un sightly, do not injure tbo meat for food, and that they may be completely removed with the skin. For Sale.
