, The possibilities of tbe matrimoni al
advertisement Lave been ouce more
disclosed by tbe revelations mode in
tbe Laporie caarder mystery. As an
iostitntion which thrives by defraud
ing of a few dollars tbe ignorant and
weak intelligence it bas been made
especially familiar of late. But as an
instrument of more serions criminal
enterprise it still needs considerable
advertisement. This it is now toreoeive
to tbe foil. Wherever in America
poople can read tbe story of Laporte
will make its way. Tbe remote mining
camps in Alaska and tbe lumber camps
in tbe Noithern wilderness, the lone-
' fiomest farms ranches of tbe far VJlest,
tbe plantations of the South and tbe
most ignorant districts of tbe great
cities will each in their dne time be
full of tbe wonder and grewsome fasci
nations of this mystery. Tbe name
of Laporte will fix itself in tbe mem
ory of at least a generation.
Umatilla county journalism is in
deed fortunate in having suoh an able
editorial page to consult, politically
speaking, miud you, as tbat of the
Pendleton Tribune. It is doubtful if
I bete is another section of tbe state
of Oregon ontside of Umatilla county,
wbiob is not cognizant of tbe fact tbat
tbe Presidential election is a matter of
history ; tbat Taft is elected and that
tbe "Peerlesri leader" bas tasted the
drugs of defeat for a third time. But
here in old Umatilla it's different.
Ibe boys of the craft are slow to oatoh
on. They must he eduoated in a polit
ical way, and tbe way adopted by tbe
Tribune is a novel and dead easy
method tbe boiler plutj method. The
method is d ti fetohiug, both in the
mattor of results and predominance of
originality ol method.
"The Fruit Grower" of St. Joseph,
Missouri, has just issued a Homesookors
Edition, which contains an extouded
roport from nil tbe fruit growiug dis
tricts of tbe West, based on a personal
visit made by its editors a fow weeks
ago, Washington receives page after
page of illustrated dusutiption, as does
Oregon tbe Pucitto Northwest, in fact,
is given greater pro mi mince than any
other district, or all other distriots
continued. It wus in company with
tbe editors of this paper tbat tbe
members of (be Missouri State Board
of Horticulture conducted tbeir in
vestigations of Northwestern fruit
growing methods. '
One of England's prominent whiskey
distillers said tbe other day of some
liquor which he sampled in the prohi
bition state of Maine: "When I asked
tbe oomponent parts I was informed
by the blender tbat be took a gallon of
wood alcohol and put a wineglassfol
of glycerine in it to mellow it, then
ground down some plug tobacco and
strained it through a cheese cloth to
give it a flavor, and then united the
whole with a gallon of water. He
added tbat it was called 'squirrel
whiskey,' because those who drank it
'telKed nutty and climbed trees.' "
Tbe growing of cranberries started
in several of tbe coast counties of Ore
gon aud Washington some five or six
years ago, and while tbe business bas
proved a socoess and tbe area devoted
to tbe fruit has beep steadily inoreased,
it is still one of tbe infant industries
of the two states. Dealers say tbat a
time will come when Oregon aud
Washington will supply tbeir own
markets, and with a grade of tbe fruit
fully equal to tbat of tbe east, but it
will be some years before this is
brought about.
Advocates of tbe Lakes to tbo Gulf
waterway are planning to oppose Cau
nou's nomination as speaker of tbe
house because Canncn, in a speech be
fore tbe Bankers' club Saturday nigh,
said we had better leave tbe matter
of waterways to a future generation of
greater experience.
From Pekin oomes tbe news tbat
"Obinose rebels with Frenoh arms"
are defoating tbe imperial troop's. We
kuew tbat graft was rampant among
tbe Chinese offloials, but grafting
French arms upon Mongolian malcon
tents is remarkable even in these Bur
baukish days.
A University of Cbioago professor
denies miraoles. How would be ex
plain tbe oase of a pretty girl worth a

father's baldheaded bookkeeper earn
ing $65 a mouth?
Esperanto is reported to be making
rapid headway as an international
language, but there is no likelihood
tbat baseball reports will ever be
written in it. It has no slang.
Twenty-live per ceut of Chicago's
milk supply is reported by experts to be
under the proper grade. Are they
never going to stop the leaks in tbe
water department?
The truo "Merry Widow" is tho oue j
whose bnsbuud left her so well pro- j
vided for tbat she can afford to buy I
one of tbe hats named after her.
One of tbe learned doctors announces
tbat a oertain amount of candy is good
for people. Why can't somebody say
as much for strawberry shortcake and
ice cream?
After a new political party gets big
enough to capture a few offices there
is al vays danger of a split.
OREGON LANDS FOR OREGON.
Wby should not Oregon have tbe
management of all the publio lands
within her borders, forest and other
wise? Wby should not all tbe states
have a similar control of the publio
domain within)tbeir limits? Such a
plan was proposed by tbe Trans-Miss
issippi congress at Denver in 1891. It
is, by tbe terms of her admission into
tbe union, tbe plan in vogue in Texas.
Tbat state bas always controlled, regu
lated and sold all its lands without
interposition by the federal govern
ment. The plan for Oregon and all other
states to exercise snob control is de
clared to be permissible under tbe fed
eral constitution. It is urged by tbe
Denver Post, whiob is supporting suoh
a plan, tbat congress could pass an act
relegating tbe management of tbe
publio domain to tbe individual states.
It has approached suoh actiou in the
Carey act providing foi tbe states to
take control of lands for irrigation
purposes. Under this act Idaho has
reclaimed a million acres and is pass
ing into the control of a second mil
lion. It is a plan to appeal to business
discretion. The story of great land
frauds perpetrated in OregoD and other
states under tbe present system is
evidenoe of the weakness of federal
control. A far removed Washington
Ai'tment with tbe people's birth
right of lands in tbe bands of corrupt
ible federal agents has faults tbat have
been shown to be fatal. Tbe colossal
frauds with wbioh the past reeks
would have been impossible under a
state regime. The state administra
tions may bave had faults in judgment
and lack of business sagacity, 'but in
federal management these are present
with tbe added infamy of theft and
criminality. State management in
Texas is beslimed with no reoord of
criminal outrages on the publio do
main. It could be so and would be so
in Oregon were state control to be
established. Under snob a regime tbe
enormous thefts of magnificent forests
by?railroad corporations would have
been impossible. The stealing of val
uable water powers in forest reserves
by monopolies oould acd would be
averted. The saving of lands and
water powers alike and tbe setting
aside of a part of their increment for
the common schools could be provided
for. it is a plan embodying many
phases of promise and few if any dis
advantages. Portland Journal.
