Tbis is not because be carried tbe flag ou the battle Meld and waved it in tbe teotb of tbe enemy, nor ia be in line for a Carnegie medal; be has merely asked tbe county board ot eqnalizaion to in crease bis assessment. That is more elory tbau anyone elso in Portland bas yet earned. To make sure that no mistake will be made, and tbat be will not be under assessed, he bas made affidavit in the regular form and ap pended a note t) tbe assessor asking tbat corrections be made. lie first finds fault witb tbe assessment of bis mouey, Dotes and accounts, wbicb wero placed at 1,500 by tbe assossor. He says tbe true figures are $2,600. Tea millions growing moldy in tbe United States treasury suffering for an owner 1 What a burden to an over worked government to have to sit up o nights and watob, and not know to whom it bolongsl For something over forty years this vast store has been gathering dust, boing tbe proceeds of "abandoned property" captured by the Union soldiers, sold for oasb and tbe mouey turned into tho treasury. To be strictly aoonrate, thero still re mains, after millions have beou dis tributed to approved claimants, $10, 028,851.88 for which Uncle Sam has never been able to find a proper owner. A forest ranger's oatiu in Crook county on plans sent out from Wash ington is thus dosoribed hy the Doud Bulletin: Tbe walls are only one thickness of light boards, while the roof is so heavy tbat tbe walls bulge and it woa necessary to prop tboui up with jack pine poles. But the strangest nud most ridiculous part of all is tbat through tbe oontor of the building there is an open lotby large enough to lend a borso through, witb tbo kitchen on ouo side and tbo liviuR room on tho other. A literal is oue wbo, seeing a wrong, is iu favor of attacking it courageously and potting it out of commission. Tbe common law is not a code of written laws enacted by a legislative bodv, Lot consists of rules of action whioh have become binding from long usage aud established custom. Tbe saddost sight iu a none too joy ous world is to behold two "Merry Widows" trying to crowd under oue umbrella and still call each otbor "dear." The "nigbtmaie riders" would ap pear to be a more suitable name for those Kentuckiaus wbo are committing so many depredations. WHEN TEACHERS GET THEIR DUE. If tbe sohool board carries out its presout purpose of advafaoing tbe sal eries of Pcrtlaud teaobers the cause of education in this city will bo well served. As tbe Journal has many timos insisted, iu order to attract tbe best talent aud secure tbe best in structional servioo, there must be adequate compensation. If teaobers must live a hand to mouth existence, they will only romain in tbe work as a temporary expedient, leaving it as soon as employment witb a better salary is available. The need of tbe schools is a stable oorps of teaobers wbo receive remuner ation suflloieut to fill them witb ap preciation of their calling and desire to remain in it. The epiiit of permau enoy tbat results from such environ ments gives tbe toachers enthusiasm, inspires tbern to equip themselves most perfectly for their work, and to seok by merit to bold their positions conditions absolutely favorable and the only conditions possible for secur ing the very test servioe. The ulti mate of soon a polioy is to lift teaobing to tbe plane of an honorable profession nud to attract to it talent that would not otherwise be available. With such a standard established, tho school board is at onoe iu position to require tbo highest standard of work, to be Eastern Oregon's Largest and Best The WareHioajse variety" sf Styles and Workmanship our lines surpass I VALUES MANY YEARS and Comforts. t Good, clean fOPLES WAREHOUSE PLNDUTON, OREGON- - satisfied with do other, and to elimi nate from tbe payrolls all wbo fail to meet tbe perfected requirements. Such is tbe policy for wbiob tbe Journal bas so often argued, and by reason of wbicb it regards tbe proposed advance as completely justiQatle. The responsibilities of teaobers iu tbe pnblic sobools are almost equal with tboso of parents. Upon tbe in fluences of tbe bomejind school largely dep.uds tbo destiny of tbo republic. Witb mora tban 93 per cent of the people of the country receiving in tbe public schools tbeir sole educational preparation of relief work, tbe enor moud responsibility tbat rests on tbe teachers becomes apparent. It is a responsibility tbat should not be com mitted to inexperienced and temporary persons, iu tbe school work for tbe moment only because other employ ment is not available. Only to highly trained, bigbly interested workers, proud of tbeir calling and purposeful in prosecuting it, should be entrusted a work so freighted with weal or woe for the future millions. Tbe school board of Portland is wise in its decision, and it will be well if its polioy spreads to every district in Oregon. Journal. WORRY, NOT WORK. A Boston neurologist of large repute has advanced a novel theory about nervous collapse, tased upon a case in his own praotioe. He relates tbat a wealthy business man consulted his physioian for relief from a nervous breakdown. He was ordered to go to Europe and rest, but it did him do good. He was sent to rest cures and sanitariums, where be was ordered to do nothing wbioh would tire him. He was informed that rest was bis only salvation. He rested week after week and month after month, and all to do purpose. At last he consulted this physioian, who believed in doing something. After studying tbe case he deoided tbat bis patieut was not iu need of rest and was not in tbe least fatigued, but simply did not have enough to do. He accordingly advised him to go tp work and quit worrying. Tbe patient did so and was cured. The remedy aud its encouraging result only go to prove the truth of the old axiom tbat woik is tbe pauaoea for all evils. Cases of overwork, so often reported, are usually cases of overworry. Care may even kill the cat whioh has nine lives to man's one, but hard work without worry never killed aoy one. Work with worry may often produoe nervous collapse and often leads to suicide, but good honest bard work without excitement or strain, and per formed within reasonable time, ie the best of remedies to guard against ner vous breakdowns. It would be an ex cellent remedy in society, also, if so ciety women, jaded and worn out by the incessant excitement, late hours, imprudent eating, and worries of cial fuuotions and rivalries insteaIl going to rest oures, would takeBe broom and flatiron and put in several hours of good bard work in the house. They would be surprised to find how rapidly tbey would reouperate and re store tbeir wasted energies. Ex change. For Sale.
