5 A Valuable Forage Plant Adapted to Growth In Semi-Arid Regions With Little Care. Lather Bar bank '8 great tborukss cactus plant is receiving unstinted at tention from the agrionltnral world, bat it is to the arid and semi-arid sec tions that the wizard's disooveiy will itself more forcibly felt. Barbank says of tbis plant: Daring the past two years the Uuited States department of agriculture has dispatched agents to all parts where cacti grow to look up tbis matter and last season gave some valuable infor mation gathered from those who had for years been feeding the wild, thorny ones to their stock with good results when properly prepared by fire, thougb it is acknowledged that tbns prepaied a portion of the nutritive value is lost and though the dangers of loss from feeding to stock are lessened, are not by any means safe, even by singeing or any other prooess, while many of these new thoroless ones are safe to bandle and as safe to feed as beets, potatoes, oarrots or pnmpkios. Bat 1st it be ondeistood that these thorns are not growing on the wild Opantias for oruament any more than poison fangs, teeth, olaws and stings are possessed by various auimals. They are for defense and when de prived of theee defenses they must be protected from stock like any other feed grown in farr.j, fields or gardens. Still some doubter who has no know ledge of desert conditions will say, ' "Will it pay?" Does anything pay? Some people think that co'rn, wheat, oats, barley, cotton, rioe, tobacco, melons and potatoes pay. How many tons of wheat or potatoes oan be raised eaob season on an acre of good soil? Yes well, by actual weight in the hummoi of 1906 in tbe oool ooast cli mate of Sonoma connty, Cal. on heavy, black "adobe" soil, generally thought wholly unsuited for cactus, my new Opuntias produoed the first year, six months from single rooted leaves, planted about Jane 1, an average of pounds per plant on one-fourth acre, yielding at tbe distance planted (2,'ix5 feet) at tbe rate of 180,230 pounds (over 00 tons) of forage per acre. Some of tbe best varieties produoed very mnob this average, though plant ed much too olosely for permanent Held culture; yeV these notes are of interest on a subject of wbiob little M 7,5(0)0 TOLLS to eslcct from. Price 10c per roll up to $1 grades, complete stock S pfl wmwa Knows the hang ofittoo House, Sign and Carriage Painting E. T. Kidder, Mc Arthur Building baa been known. These Opuntias are always expected to produoe nearly doable as much feed tbe second and succeeding year as tbay d tbe first season of planting. Yet I would not expect one-fonrtb tbe above yield on desert soil without irrigation: but would expect nearly cr quite as much as tbe yield mentioned above in a very warm climate with one or two light irrigations eaob sea son. These improved Opuntias must of oourse be fenced from stock; tbe leaves to be fed to the stock when most needed, and in countries where great numbers of valuable stock are lost in times nnusaal drought will be of in estimable value and will also, without doubt, prove of great value in less arid countries as a common farm or or chard crop even on tbe best agricul tural soils but more especially on bar ren, rooky, hill and mountain sides and gravelly river beds wbiob are now of no use wbatevor. The small, bard, wild thorny uaotns has been a common everyday food for horsps, oamels, males, oxen, growing and beef etook, dairy cows, pigs and poultry for more than 50 years, though millions have died from tbe thorns, yet, no systematio work for their im provement bad been taken up until some 15 years ago; now agriculturists and bortiouturists in every land are deeply interested and tbe governments of many oouuties are taking measures to secure a stook of tbe improved Opuntias to avoid if possible tbe too common onourre'noe of famines for tbe Opuntias oan remain uncultivated and undisturbed year after year, constantly increasing in size and weight until needed; then eaob acre will pi eserve the lives of hundreds of human beings for months until ober food oan be ob tained. , ' Weston News Items.
