' AN INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER Six and Eight Pages Every Friday. F. B. Bovu, Publisher Application fur entrance ait 2nd class matter made on July 5, 1WI7 at the poBtofflce at Athena, Oregon Under an Actot Congress of March 8, 1879 Subscription Rata J p ir year, in advanct 12.00 Klngle copies In wrappers, 5c, ATHENA. ORE.. JULY 10 1908 If the thorniest! cactus will do half as well as a forago plant as ia claimed for it, it would revolutionize stock feeding and range conditions in eastern Oregon, If. says the East Oregonian instead of producing 80 tons aero, it would produce 10, or even per 30 tons per acre, it would work a radioal change in stock raising in this and other eastoru Oregon counties. Alfal fa is no the only crop adapted to tb arid and semi-arid lands of eastern Oregon. The homely sunflower will make any man rich who' will grow it in large enough quantities, cultivate harvest it nad market it with proper care and diligence. 'I he rubber plant ot New Mexioo and Arizona will also crow in luxuriant abundance on th highest, driest knolls in the sand belt and will yield from $30 to 75 per acre, according to the cultivation and care bestowed upon it. People get in to a rut and oome to think nothing but old varioties of orop3 can be produced ot a profit, while all about them lie new promises and new opportunities of which they don't dream. If you aro not holding government land by some method you are entited to (He on 320 acres of desert laud. Desert laud is laud you must reclaim by placing water upon it. You are required to pay 250 per acre for this laud when you file and you tbeu are compelled to spend at least 11,00. per acre each year upon the laud in le- claiming it. You have four years in wbiob to get water upon the snme. Fenoing, clearing, building ditches, putting down wells for irrigation pur poses, etc, are allowed by the govern ment and yon ore credited with the money speut and work done toward the aunual payments. At the end of four years you pay $1.09 in cash to the govcrbuiout. You can take any amount ot arid laud up to 320 acres. ' Overalls don't cure who wear them in this, the laud of opportunity. A trau new pair of overalls or a pair mutilated by time and held in place by the aid of a horse shoe nail is no straight tip on the real worth, mental or metallic, of the mau inside. Buo caroos and the boss, Laukers and the Lank loss, the mau of olotb and the luiiu of oaids, the mau of much aud the man of much less are not distin guishable by tile hats aud pioadilly ueok gear iu this, the last aud the beat of the land of the west. The art of the babor dasher doosu't bieatbe the breath of wottli into e mau, remarks an editor who knows what he is talk ing about. Demonstration of the powers of the new DoiHoless gun, which Hiram Percy Maxim is perteotiug, was giveu by the inventor at New York. 'I wo large books wbiob served as a target, were penetrated for n distance of six inches by a discbarge of the weapon without the spectators being aware that a bul let had left the rifle. There was a slight click as tbe trigger was pulled and the eusuiug silence left the im pression that tbe gun bad not beou discharged. On examiuatiou, however, tbe soft uosed bullet was found firmly imbedded in the leaves ot tbe book. Motrin Calvin of Puuliua, Crook county, Oregou's most unsophisticated mau, bought a ooiuio valentine. It cost bim a niukel. Then he did a lit tlo drawing. A postage stamp was Httaulmd. 'the valontiuo was address ed to Mrs. Ida Mosier. It was dropped in the mail. It was delivered. She objected. That valentine cost Cal vin f :!00, says the Portland Journal. Calvin was indicted by the federal grand jury for sending obsceue matter through the mail. Objeotious to the long cruise of tbe battleship fleet have never been num erous, but if any patriot needs to hear ardent applause of it he should con sult the parents who have beou accus tomed to holp the childieu at their home lessons. Thauks to tbe voyage mid the consequent publicity, these fathers aud mothers now know almost as much abotit geography as their bovs and girls do. With tbe temperature at 90 degrees ia Chicago corned tho report of tbe death of many from exoeesive beat. From the blistering intensity of the heat prostrations are recorded by the score. Such dire results never follow the blazing, blistering summer sun in eastern Oregon although the tempera ture frequently will ezoeed 90 by a dozen degrees. No state in the Union is spreading more high class advertising matter than Oregon. Tbe splendid booklets issued to present tbe claims of Yam bill county, Albany and Linn county, brants Pass, Roseburg, Medford and Ashland, are superior to those issued by tbe oommeroial bodies of other states. Eastern Oregon is not being neglected, and this character of adver tising cannot fail to have an advanta geous effect, and other communities should see that their claims are not overlooked. At no time during the conference of the board of Normal school regents was tbe Weston school in danger of being dropped. Even Gov. Chamberlain and Regent Ayer, radioal opponents of anything above two normal schools, were firm in their contention for con tinuing tbe Eastern OregDU school. Draiu was dropped aud now Eastern Oregon, Western Oregon, and South ern Oregon have normal schools for keeps. Never forget yon are a part of tbe town says an exobango, and that your own deportment helps to make up tbe stranger's estimate of the place. Sell all you can aud buy all you can at home. Every dollar that is sent or carried away from home makes tbe town that muob poorer. If you have the means invest in something that will give somebody employment. Do not kick at a proposed improvement simply because it is not at your door. Governor Chamberlain divided tbe honors between tbe democrats and re publicans in his appointment of tbe officials of tbe new county of Hood River. Last week tbe entire list of officials for the new county was an nounced at Salem and on July 1. this uew county, the twenty-fourth on tbe map of Oregon, begun operations with tbe county seat at Hood Rivor. Aooordiug to tbe Cbioago quotations flour has advanced from $6 to $6.25 per barrel. Those iu olose touob with tbe market predict that it will reach $6.75. Meat also has the habit and tbe price coutinues on tbe upward ten dency. It is not generally known there is a law under wbiob any miuor under eighteen years of age who is found smoking tobacco may be arrested and fined for the offense. The penalty is sufficiently severe to aot as an incen tive for stopping the babit. A burglar who "masqueraded as a yaobtman" has keen- sentenced to twenty seven years in the penitentiary. If the "masquerades" included tbe wearing of a yacbtiug cap the senteuoe was too light. A number of Chinese experts are coming to the United States to study tbe financial system. When they find out all about it tbey might eulighten the poople of this oouutry. A mau of tbe uame of Scarlet is acting as prosecutor of tbe Penusyl- vauia statebouse grafters. It is, per haps, ouly natural that be should catch some of them ied-bauded. A Texus woman has forfeited an es tate worth $800,000 iu order to marry the mau she loves. And he will prob ably be reminded of tbe fact for tbe rest of bis life. With Umatilla county furnishing the attractions, Walla Walla is said to have boeu able to pull off her Fourth of July celebration. While we uow have no ex-Presideut iu these United States the people will soon make one. A tueu's club, tbe admission fee to whioh will be $100, may be formed in Pendleton. A GOOD INVESTMENT. The $100,000 asked for to use iu building more boats for tbe upper Co lumbia river is nearly raised, is as good as raised, showing that Portland people respond pretty well wbeu "shown." This is a very good thing for tbem to do, but it really is only a beginning of thiugs they need to do, of investment that thy ought to make, for Portland's benefit. In most oases the motiey will bring fair .direct, specifio returus; but in cases where it dose not the indirect beueflt will be ample reward. And that niiriy who do uot give or iuvest will share iu the benefits must uot be considered at all; if everybody held back on that account little would ever te accomplished. Means of river transportation for tbe wheat of tbe region adjacent to tbe tipper Columbia river will be a great b4p bet railroads iuto the in terior mast also be built. Witt more loads to bring tbe produce of that re- ( ; a a. I : .a I & a. i i ' giuo lo lue river, nun uoais no uanirpuri it cheaply to Portland, those products would greatly increase, tbe people up there would become more numerous and would have more money to spend for merchandise, and tbe business of Pcrtland would become much larger. It is in such ways that a city forces a healthy, irresistible growth upon itself by reaching out into tbe inter ior, into distant localities in all direc tions and helping tbem to develop and help themselves. Portland has never done enough of this. Apparently it is going to do more of it Tbe subscrip tion for more boats on tbe Columbia is an excellent beginning. Anyhow, it's going some, and we Portlanders should "keep a-goin' " in similar di rection at all times, and, if we do, there will be a city here of 300,000 people and a state of 900,000 by tbe time of tbe 1910 census I Portland Journal. MR. SHERMAN'S NOMINATION. It is merely stating tbe faots to say that if James S. Sherman had been mentioned for the vice-presidency in loud, resounding tones a few weeks ago the whole west wonld have risen and asked politely, "Who is James S. Sherman?" It is merely stating the faots to add that there was no special reason for nominating Mr. Sherman exoept tbat he was tbe sop demanded by tbe gen tlemen who bad been run over by the great steam roller. Tbe arrangements were all made beforehand, as was evi dent from the proceedings in the con vention, but they were not all out and dried. "Uuole Joe" fairly tremtled with emotion as be made his speech seconding tbe nomination of Mr. Sherman, who is of tbe standpat vari ety of statesmanship. Whether tbe nomination was good politios or not time will tell. At pres ent we note it as an exhibition of tbe mechanism of such gatherings. There was tbe appearanoe of something like satsfaotion in the New York delega tion, wbioh wanted to name its man. But plainly tbe majority of the dele gates from all tbe states were not deeply affeoted, because their know ledge of tbe candidates was but little more thorough and comprehensive than that of the public They were car rying out the agreement that bad been made for tbem. Probably they, like tbe public, are now wondering if Mr. Sherman is of presidential size and waiting for infor mation. Without reflecting on the candidate, we should say that the mystery is not to bis advantage. Cbioago Record-Herald (Rep.) COOL READING.
