The young man died from the effects of rheumatism. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Stumpf former resi dents of Athena. The members of the G. W. B. M. were entertained Wednesday afternoon after the business session, at the home of Mrs. Theo. Danner, assisted by ber sister, Mrs. Wall. Strawberries with cream and cake, were the refresh ments. The July meeting ' will be held at the home of Mrs. P. E. Col- bern. Mr. A. B. MoEwen is critically ill at his homo in this oity with pneu monia. Mr. MoEwen has been afflicted with la grip a couple of times lately, and the last ttttaok resulted in pneu monia of the worst form. Dr. Smith of Pendleton has been in consultation with Dr. Sharp aud a trained nurse is assisting in the case. The young friends of Miss Kitty holson to the number of about forty enjoyed the hospitality of her home last evening iu honor of her 16th birthday. Games and musio furnish ed entertainment until near midnight aud a dainty lunch of cake and punch was served. Miss Kitty was presented with a handsome birthday ring, set with a garnet and two pearls. H, Sanders farm west of town. Mr. Ash pangh is the brother of Mnu Sanders, whom that lady Was called to see last winter with the news that he was on hla deathbed. However, he seems to have; fully recovered bis good health and was greeted by many old friends in Athena. XWestou Normal Commencement ex ercises closed Tuesday evening when Begent Hofer presented diplomas to the 23 graduates before a large audi ence in Normal chapel. The orations were good, the musio inspiring the sweet girl graduates and manly young rueu fit to oompare with any graduat ing olass in the state. Judge Lowell and Begent Hofer both made speeches complimenting faculty and student body in high terms. Last Saturday the Baptist Sunday sohoola of Athena, Adams and Helix combined in a grand pionio in Krebs grove near Adams, and spent the day iu a most joyous manner. A splen did literary and musical program waa first enjoyed by all, then the grand feature of the day, lunch, was spread, afor wbiob gams of all kinds includ ing baseball, v were played.
