YALE OF IRE WEST K York and Chicago Millionaires Give to Whitman College $1,500,000. New Whitman College has been promised $1,500,000 by New Yoik and Chioago capitalists, acoording to ex-Governor Miles C. WooreM says the Bnlletin. Tbe college, wbiob was tonnded by pioneer residents of tbe Wulla Walla Valley, can have this amount provid ing 1500,000 can be raised ou tbe Pa cific coast, and an active campaign will be commenced in the near future ta rnisn thin nmnnnt in Wnshinctnn. Oregon and Idaho. "We h a vn, positive assurances of great financial support, amounting to at least $1,500,000 for Whitman Col lege, which will make it tbe model college of tbe North Paoiflo Coast, if wo can raise $500,000 in tbe Paoiflo Northwest," said Mr. Moore. "The whole matter has boen considered by the Whitman College board and I have cvory reason for believing tbat tbe en terprise will be successful. There are several men m me noriowesc woo have been kindly treated by Dame Fortune iu tbe past few years who will undoubtedly do their best to help raise tbe funds required here. "If onr dIbus bear frnit. Whitman College, which is now a non-sectarian institution, will be to tbe Pacifio Nortbwest and the State of Washing ton what Lelaud Stanford University is to California and what Yale is to tbe east." It is well known tbat certain Chioa go men of vast wealth have liberally endowed Whitman College in tho past, bnt it is also stated tbat tbe sources from which tbe money has come in tbe east are williug to subscribe $1,500,000 for Whitman providing a liberal spirit is shown by men of means in tbe Paoiflo Northwest. TITLll. I 1 f . A.nA wniie iub sum njouiioueu, 9uuu,uuu, is expected to be subscribed by citi- zons of Oregon, Washington and Ida- bo, no definite amount has been agreed on. II SOUL IN FOUR PARTS. By Rev. Israel Putnam. Part Fourth. No man was ever known as a sonl- wiuuor who denied tbe plenary iuspi ration of tbe Bible. Every successful minister of Christ has unbounded faith in tbe Saored Scriptures. Aud every one . who would be eucoensful must have the same faith. And when I say Sacred Scriptures I menu every thought from Genesis to Revelation. To begin to question tbe genuineness of any part is to open tbe way to a disposition to doubt and tear down the whole struc ture of tmth. Au old colored brother, a Deacon, said oouoerning bis minis ter: "He's de bes man I eber seed to tak de Bible apart, but he dnnno how to put it togedder agin." Tbis is au excellent description of some ministers today. Tbev criticise, change, explain away, sot up their own opinions eto. until the message is one sided and without Divine authority. So mnob letting the Bible down to men, rather than lifting men up to the Bible has most seriously injured spiritual life in tbe churches until only about one in five or six of the membership are at prayer and olass meetings and other devotional sorvioes. We are in a time when great em phasis must be put on the porson of Christ. To know who He is, is more important than to know what He said, for the authority of his Word depouds upou wbo Ho is. And what is thought about Him is certainly going to afleot what is thought al out the efficiency of his atonement. Muoh modem day preaching only patrouizos Christ and He is often damned with faint praise. The blood of sacrifice is light ly osteomed. His ethioal teaohings are exalted well but if souls are to be won tho pulpit shall be the pedestal for the Cross. It is to them wbo preach tbe Divine and crucified Christ to wbom tbe Holy Spirit is given for witnessing power, see 1st Cor 2. 1-5. Tbere is nothing tbat can be substi tuted with success in Gods sight for the fullness of bis Holy Spirit. Tbe engine may be a perfect piece of hu man mechanism as is possiDJe wun mighty wheels ponderous shafts and polished trimmings and ten thousand tons of water bnt wnnout nre, sne is only a dead pile of useless display, nice to behold, but powerless to turn a single wheel: And not only so. but 1. I nnf At thtt WQV fft make loom for another equiped with tbe power that only Are can produce. And so with the minister of Jesus Christ. He may possess all tbe bril liant trimmings tbat cultnre, society and eduoation can produce and have every other qualification on earth, but without the Baptism of tbe Holy Ghost, and fire, bis words will be as "sounding brass or a 'inkling symbol." 11.11 n 4 4. I O see Acts a, Aiau. o, n: uu. o, 16: Heb. 1. 7: 12. 29. Tbe Gospel of the crucified, risen ascended aud glorified Christ was not allowed to be preached until after tbe endowment with Pentecostal power. Acts 1, 8. Christ was not acknow ledged, by God, as bis Son until the Spirit descended upon Him. Matt. 3, 16-17. Men may be teased, coaxed and persuaded to join a denomination without the Heavenly joyland peace of tbe precious Hcly Spirit, but no one was ever won to Christ in tbe real Gospel way, without it. Right here is where many good meaning preachers, not only fail them selves, but hinder rather than help tbe cause. Some one has been moved by their eloquence, or persuaded by their arguments, to nuito with tbe cburob, bis real experience being taken for guaranteed, when tbe real fact is he only reformed and was never born again at all, thus beiog deceived, for "Except a man be born again he ean not see the Kiugdom of God," John 3, 3 and being so deceived is inclined to indifference and doubting and, in many oases is more difficult to search for real salvation than before he start ed at all, and often never finds tbe true secret of a happy life, while all this time bis careless life has bad an unwholesome inflaeuoe on the com munity in wbiob he bas lived. After all said, has keen done, with out a cultivation of the passion for souls, very few if any, will ever be won. This is the greatest of all hu man qualifications, and will be evi dent in bis preaching. His earnest ness, exhortation, pathos, power and personal appeal all, will show it, as well as warning and invitation. An old Scotch woman said of Robert Mo Cheyne, "He preaches as if heisa-dyiu a-most to have you oonverted." A colored minister was so burdened for the lost that he went, after miduight, and knelt at the doors of many nnsaved aud pleaded with God for their salva tion, John Knox said "Give me Soot land or I die." George Whitefield said "Give me souls or take mine " William Bums, turned off from Argyle street, Glasgow, in order to weep alone for the unsaved masses going to and fro. A man was in a desert where wild beasts and ugly things clutched at bim aud when be stood on tbe bluff over looking tbe Sea where tbe breakers were boating on tbe white beeob, there on tbe sand lay n body whioh be thought be recognized to bo bis own. And while the waves were coming nearer and uoraor, be saw a white figure, a woman clothed in white, with something red in her hand and as she came near to rescue him be saw she bore in her hand her own (as it seomod) bleeding heart. What a pic ture of inspiration for us all to be come winners of souls. Men are peri shing, perishing, perishing I Tbe threatening billows of destruction dra w nearer and nearer to those dead in trespasses and in sins. O tbat we all might weep with Christ over the wicked city and seek to gather them for his Kingdom, and go with our own blooding hearts to the perishing mul titudes everywhere that they might te won, iu perfect peaoe, to Him Who livoth aud reigneth forever and ever I TO SUCCESS, Oregon Has Done More Montie B.
