em Strike is Made in the Famous Her cules Mine in the Coeur d'Alenes District. An ore reserve of enormous size and of practically inestimable wealth baa been opened up by the long power tunnel on tbe IlercoJes mine near Burke, one of tbe Coeor d'Alene's most famous producers. Tbe new strike, tbe fall extent of wbicb was only recently opened op, makes tbe Ileroales superior to any of tbe mines of the Coeur d'Alenes except tbe Banker Hill aud Sullivan, if not, indeed, tbe equal of tbe Wardner pro perty, wbiob. with tbe Broken Hill mines of Australia, ranks as one of the largest and richest silver-lead mines iu tbe world. The new Hercules strike was made at tbe eud of tbe lower 4500-foot tun nel, and at a vertical depth of about 1800 feet from tbe surface. Tbe ore body has been crosscut. It is 60 feet wide and carries frcni 21 to SO feet of solid galena ore wbicb gives average values of from 6 5 to 70 per oent load and close to 100 ounces of silver to tbe ton. The rest of the width of the vein is milling ore of good quality. Tbe size of tbe ore reserve opened up is immense, for tbe lower tunnel has tapped tbe ore at a depth of 700 feet below tbe former lowest workings of tbe mine. Even in tbe upper work ings there are today vast untouched re serves. "Tbe length of tbe ore shoot on the new level is as yet undetermined, but io tbe upper workings tbe shoot was continuous for about 500 feet," said L. W. Hntton, one of tbe owners of tbe famous mine, "and we oxpeot that it will prove to be longer in the lower workings." Tbe Hercules mine is iu Gorge gnlcli. Tbe mouth of tbe tunnel iu wbiah tbe strike was reoently made is be tween 500 and 600 feet above creek level at Burke. Tbe future productively of tbe Her oules will probably be enormous, for tbe Tiger mine at Burke was mined pioQtably to a depth of 2200 feet be low tbe creek level, and it is reasonable to suppose that tbe Hercules ore body oan be mined to a similar depth. If that proves to be true there is still from 2700 to 2800 feet of ore lying un touched bolow tbe present lowest level. A SOUL IN FOUR PARTS. theories about that, until we have but little above tbe minimnm of heart power remaining. Intellectual cob webs are being spun while multitudes are starving for tbe Bread of Life and honey out of the Rock of Ages. "In many ways I have been helpful here, but it does seem to me that tbe Christian religion is beooming a mere philosophy and Christ is becoming more distant. "My soul is starving." The above is tbe sad lament of a young woman who had reoently been attending one of ocr largest colleges and greatly in jured as a soul winner, wbiob she bad been previous to her going there. This is no uncommon. experience in many of onr schools and churches of today, and all tbe result of putting tbe emphasis iu the wrong place. The same tendenoy is seen in onr annual conferences, many times, when young men come to tbe sacred altar for admission. Muob mote time is usu ally spent in aeoertaining their intel lectual qualifications than their heart and soul-winning qualifications. Ail seem very anxious that they should have college diplomas, but seem to take for granted tbeir ability in win ning souls to Christ. In tbe light of tbe Word, tbe Apostolic, and our own Methodist .Fathers, this is all wrong. The spiritual qualifications, from tbe Exborter to tbe Bishop, should, at every place, and time, have first and deepest consideration. Then, God speed tbe greatest intel lects, with the greatest education, for tbey may flame with life and love aud Holy Power. When Mr. Tboluok had beoo e Uni versity professor for about fifty years. he said: "From tbe age of seventeen I have always asked myself, What tbe chief eud of man's life? I could never persuade myself that tbe acqui sition of knowledge was that end, Must then God brought me into con tact with a venerable saint of Christ and from tbeu 1 have bad but one pas sion, (Jurist and Christ alone. Every one out of Gbrist I look upon as a for tress which I must storm and win was in my eighteenth year when God gave me my first convert. He was an artillery officer, a Jew, a wild crea ture without rest; but soon he put me to shame by bis true devotions to Christ. When I look back upon tbe thousands of youths whose hearts have opeued up under my influence, I can say, Tbe Lord bath done it. In work ing thus to save souls, my life has keen one of joy rather than toil." STEERS BBSS! PER HEAD Over 5000 Head are Now Being Fed On Butter Creek. I Take De Witt's Kidney and Bladder Pills. I By Rev. Israel Putnam. Part Seoond. Over-emphasis upon intellectuality is one of tbe things responsible for the decadence of soul-wiuning ty the min iHtery. If education is of tbe right kind, and rightly applied, the more tbo better. Education and culture have been called the handmaids of Christianity, but by some tbe haud ruaids are put on the throne, while Christ is crucified on many a literary oross. If two-thirds of modern educa tion iu thepnlpit was obauged to heart we might sooner see the triumph of Christianity. . With tbe heart man believeth unto righteousness, Rom. 10, 10, aud none bnt a righteous heart oan win an uniigbteous heart to a right eous God. Self ceuterod, self -confident intelloo tualism dares try to overthrow tbe Word of God. There is nothing elso that dare be so during. It looks to me like it should be bandied with oare. The affections, emotious, instincts and lioart-longings after a deeper, holier life, is being less emphasized, while training of the mind is more and more emphasized. We often bear such ex pressions as, "be is a baok number, au old fogy" &o. The disposition to ward this tendenoy is tbe baue of tbe Spiritual life of many of our ministers. Everything must be brought to the bar of reason, it is suid; while it is evidently overlooked that tbe feeling purt of our nature is as deserviug of a bearing as the arguing part, tor both are God-given. Why this lament over the dearth of great revivals? Why do the obafiot wheols drag heavily? It is because tbe ministry has gone too much to an alysis, controversy, metaphyseal dis quisition, high and dry systematic the ology, and too little to the simple Gos pel of Christ, just saying what Jesus said, especially as to the Holy Spirit in his essence, offices and fruits: See John 14,26; 16.7-H; Acts 1, 4-8 ; 3. 83; 1 Cor. 3, 10-16; 13, 1-13; also John 3. 5-6. - Tbe cryiug need of the ministry of today is more Holy Ghost. There was no Peutaoost iu the second chapter of AoU without it, never bus been one siuoe without it, aud never will bo, for it is God's ouly way of briugiug forth bis new born sons: Please read Rom. 8, 9-16. There is no subject to whioh people will listen with more reverent attention than that of tbe Holy Spirit. But how often are the poor sheep fed on tbe husks of a cold, dry, hair-splitting theology, aud ecclesiastical form ulaes, while tbeir hearts go out in yearning dceire for sometbiug to satis fy tbe inmost lougings of their souls. Dr. Campbel, of Euglund, after a reoent visit to this country, declared that "in Amerioa, among miuistors, Spirituality aud intelloetnality are di vorced; that nuhappily they are not always, nor often found iu tbe same men; that the intellectual aud spirit ual leaders are ditfereut sets." Then, again, we have our theories on whioh to perforin our intellectual gymnastics theories of the atone ment, of the oiigiu of evil, of missiou ary eutorpiiae, theories about this, and EDITOR SCOTT BROUGHT INTO IT The Oregon Journalist Denies Lincoln StefTens' Allegations. In the March number of the Amer ican Magazine is an artiole by Lincoln StefTens on Oregou affairs, wherein bo gives the text of a telegram said to have beeu written by H. W. Scott, editor of the Oregonian, and sent by W. M. Lndd to Jonathan Bourne at Salem, during tbe Oregon senatorial campaign in 1903 Mr. Scott is de clared to have made offers ot various kinds to Mr. Bourne in consideration of Mr. Bourne s support of Mr. Scott for Senator. The Oregonian says editorially: "It is simply notion. This so-called agreement, alleged to have been writ ten by Mr. Scott, was not written by him, uor dictated by him, nor even seen by him, till now. It never exist ed. It is fabrication ty somebody, and sheer forgery. It follows, of oourse, that it was not wired to Salem, on the last uigbt of the sessiou or at any time, by Mr. Ladd, or by anyone else; aud Mr. Ladd, moreover, never saw it till it was showu him in this maca- ziue artiole." Even from the Mountains Ballard's Snow Liniment is praised for tbe good it does. A sure cure for Rheumatism and all pain. Wriebt W. Loving, Grand Junotion, Colo., wiites: "I used Ballard's Snow Lini ment, last wintor, for Rheumatism and can recommend it as tbe boat Liniment on tbe market. I thought, at the time I was taken down with this trouble, that it would be a week before I could get about, but on applying your Lini ment soveral times during tbe night I was about in 48 hours and well in tbreodays." No Active Canvass. Attorney John MoCourtof Pendleton denies thai he is making an active canvass as a candidate for United States district attorney, as has beeu reported in eastern Oregou. He has been a passive candidate for sev eral weeks. At the instance of friends he became an applioant for the post some strong recommendations were sent to Washington by Pendleton people. Aside from that, MoCourt claims, he has made no effort aud if tbe nomina tion is tendered him by .the president it will be without any farther solicita tion. According to MoCourt, be does not consider his chances very promis ing, and be would not be disappointed by failure to secure the appointment. Sues to Collect Note.
