AN INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER . Six and Eight Pages Every Friday. F. B. Boyd, Publisher. Application for entrance as 2nd class matter made on July 5, 1907 at the postofflce at Athena, Oregon (Juderan Actot Congress of March 3, 1879 Subscription Kitst ! p r year. In advanct 12.00 (jingle copies In wrappers, 6c, ATHENA. ORE.. FEB. 7 .1908 The Conperville Times publishes two interesting stories illustrating the posnbilitis of success in handling the same things ou a farm. One man has a little place, 'situated on the shoies of Useless bay, on which he conducts a fruit and poultry farm. He does not make a loud noise about his wealth or knowledge of figures. From a flock of 58 obickens be' gets an average of 85 eggs a day, and au income of $9 a week from that small investment. Of course, it is only one of the sources of iuoome from that little Island couuty farm. But it shows what can he ac complished by practical work and right management. The mailing of statements, snowing the amount of delinquent subscription due is ofteu resented by subsorbers, but unjusly so. A newspaper has to be conducted the same as any other business enterprise and it often becomes necessary to adopt the method of mail ing statements to collect amounts past due, No reasouable man will tuke offense at this proceedure. All that publisher asks is that be teceive what is due him. The Washington State grange, which is making plans for the manu facture of denatured alcohol, will be interested in the arrangements under way at the national capital for the es tablishment of a still at the bureau of chemistry for instruction in the pro cess of distillation. State argioultural colleges are invited to send representa tives to Washington to make them selves familiar with the operation of the still. It is reported that the chief oook of the Grown Princes of Germany has beou iu this oouutry studying Ameri cuu oookiug, that the princess likes American victuals, and that her ohef has been paying especial attentiou to pies, cakes and flapjacks. The poor mau may master the mysteries of mince meat, but he will never learn the difference botweeu a fried cake, a doughnut and a cruller. Iu the coast cities tbore is talk of uniting ou sotno plan to provide work for the unemployed floatiug popula tion. The faot is impressing itself on tho city authorities in various places that sonio organized effort will have to to made to take care of a lot of these people at leust during the re maining months of the winter if not by giving them work, then by pure charity. During 1907 women gained addi tional voting privileges iu Norway, Swedeu, Denmark, Great Britain and Russia. Iu the latter oouutry, bow evor, the oouoessious are enveloped in so many restrictive conditions that they are of question ble advantage. Nevertheless, the suffragists believe they have reesou to congratulate them selves on Ave successes last year. If certain members of the Pilot Book city council exerted oue-half the en ergy iu seenriug a waterworks system for the town that has been wasted in bohalf of a bawdy house for the bo oommodatiou of tho saloons, proporty owners would lose loss sleep over tho possibility of a fire that would nieau doetruotiou to evory house iu town, re murks the Iiooord. The large amount of money expend ed by the catalogue houses is respons ible for the enormous buuiuess traus aoted by firms of that class. This faot should be convincing argutneut to the oouutry merchant that it pays to ad vertise. Meet the catalogue bouses with tho same uiediciue tbey uso and their sales will soou dimiuisb. Au Americau tbeatrioal manager proposes to put a stage iu tho largest steamships, and relieve the tedium of the voyage by plays every uigbt. To niauy travelers the pleasure of au ooeau voyage consists largely iu leaving bebiud as far as possible the labors aud eutertanimeuts peculiar to the laud. The Eight-Hour League of America is conducting an agitation among the trades onions with the objeot of mak iujj the "universal eight-hour work day" the paramount issue of tbo core iul pieeideiitial campaign. There is a strong movement in the State of Washington along the line of establishing co-operative stores. One has been opened in Seattle and since it has been iu operation it has done so well that it has. purchased a coal mine, with a view to sell the products to union people. Ostensiby bowing to public senti ment, Jim Hill has finally decided to grant colonist rates on bis Great Northern and Northern Paciflo roads. Friend Jim is a thrifty fellow, even if he does have to be coaxed once in a while. A Pennsylvania murderer has been sentenced to prison for 150 years. If there bad been a woman on the jury she would no doubt have made a plea for clemency by asking to have the term marked down to 149 years. A Pennsylvania roan who tried to shoot out one of his teeth to save a dentist bill, succeeded iu his purpose, but made it necessary for bis family to pay the undertaker. Some people have oo lock at all as economists. If Japan's geographical situation is suou, as Prot. Trent of Stanford uni ersity says, that it is imperative for that nation to control the Pacific, all we have to eay is that we feel torry for Japan. A New York doctor says the great majority of alleged cases of bydropbo bia are merely cases of bad scares. And the dogs who are involved were no doubt as badly scared as their victims. A Michigan mau wrote a message ou a toadstool stating be was about to commit suioide. But as be did not eat the toadstool his friends think be has eaten bis words. Queer world. In reading over woinens applications for divorce we occasionally run across a unique charge, wbiob goes to'sbow that some husbands are quite original in their meanness. Type-writing maobiues are not con ducive to deep thinking or the bring ing out of great thoughts. The me chanical work iuterferes with mental labor. There is uo promise of a crown of righteousness for profloieucy iu regu lating your neighbors. You cannot oauoel the custom of preying ou your fellows by praying to your Father above. NEWSPAPER LAWS.
