Rev. and Mrs. Geo. T. Ellis arrived
home Saturday after an extended visit
with their children iu Baker City, and
the regular services at tbe Baptist
church have been resumed.
Mr. and Mrs. Jap Harden were up
last week from their farm near Helix
and visited with relatives here. They
were accompauied home by Mr. and
Mrs. Cbester MoCollough.
The spring-iike weather during the
fore part of the week was an incentive
for carrying on farm work. E. A.
Dudley, Sam Dnnlap and others had
teams in the field plowing.
Jesse York is having a first class
cistern built at his Dry creek ranch
and is connecting the eaves troughs
from his residence therewith, to save
tbe rain water for use on bis dry
ranch.

Miss Bertie Miller, nieoe of H. O.
Wortbington, and well known in this
city, was married reoontly in Baker
City, to Charles Holdaway. Rev. Geo.
T. Ellis of this city performed the cer
emony while visiting there.
Rev. and Mrs. Geo. T. Ellis returned
Saturday from Baker City where they

riage of Professor Ellis Pinkerton of
Weston, to Miss Ethel Odelbyde at
Ashland, Or., where the professor bas
been teaobiug sohool for some time.
Mr. Pinkerton is a worthy young man,
and the young couple have tbe best
wishes of many friends here.

Saturday afternoon, Mr. C. A. Barrett
and W. R. Taylor were elected to nil
the Bhoit and long terms respectively
on tbe board of school directors. Tbe
election was held as the result of the
resignations of A. M. Gillis and M. L.
Watts.

news from W. A. Rulison, better known
as "Han," Atnena s lormer gardener,
who is now comfortably situated in
his own home in Olathe, Kansas. Mr.
Rulison says he is taking it easy- this
winter, and if Athena people want
him to make their gardens next spring
they may let him know, "and call
loud." - '
William MoCrackeu, n Pendleton
stookman recovered a stolen horse in
Athena Monday. Tbe horse bad teen
purchased by Claud Estes. who iu
turn disposed of tbe animal to Bert
Warren. A young man, claiming to
be in a hypnotio state traced the horse
and was given the $25 reward by Mr.
MoCraoken. The ycung fellow said
before he started out to hunt tbe horse,
be had been hypnotized by bis father,
and working under mesmeric influence,
he found no trouble iu looating tbe
animal.
Friends of Mrs. E. Manasse in this
oity, and they are many, learn with
regret of tbe sudden death recently in
a hospital in San Francisco of her
sister, Mrs. Lenz, Mrs. Lenz, with
her husband and daughter, were visit
ors in Athena a year or two ago, and
by ber graoious personality the lady
made many friends while here. Her
home at tbat time was at Victoria,
B. C, Ou behalf of Athena friends,

Mrs. Manasse, who is ' now in Stock

it appeared that everybody had a
claim on it Mr. Jerry St. Dennis, a
prominent laud owner, brought tbe
dressed hog to town. Mr. St. Dennis
was in debt to John Bell and Harry
McBride. Seeing a cbance to "got
even" with Mr. St Dennis, they got
possesion of the pork and sold it to
Sherman for $13. Then it was discov
ered that the hog was not St. Dennis'
property, be having previously dispos
ed of it to Reiubold Harms of Peudle
ton, to whom St Dennis should have
delivered it. Fiually Hurras recovered
his pork and Sherman reimbursed $12,
and tbe indomitable Jerry went home
as usual, with a voluptuous jag.
