An infant of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
La Roque, residents of tbe reservation,
died after a short illness, and was
buried iu tbe Athena cemetery yester

"Better Than Sacrifice." A welcome

fracture of her arm yesterday while
performing on roller skates. This is

years will make his next professional
visit on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for one day

Mrs. Cbas. Gay and family will re
turn to Athena this week and take up
residence for the winter. Mr. Gay will
remain at Cayuse and Thorn Hollow
wheat stations a while longer to re
ceive wheat at those points. .. .

accompanied by Mrs. MoCorkell, came
to town Wednesday bringing a load of
rosy, red mountain apples. He fonnd,
as all mountain ranchers do, a ready
market for bis product in Athena.
Mrs. Rook well Carey, who is visiting
ber mother and sister here, was a
guest at the John Gross borne in Walla
Walla this week. She will return to
her home in Portland tomorrow, after
a pleasant visit of A month in Athena.

versary of Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Sohmitt, a party of friends congregat
ed at their fine home west of town

Mrs. David Taylor has reoeived tbe
sad news of the critical illuess of her
brother, William Gerking, at bis home
near Tekoa, Wasb. His death was
hourly expected at last reports. Mr.
Gerking was a visitor to relatives here
some months ago.

Miss Ruth MoElroy is reported ill at
home- near Cambridge, Idaho.
Miss McElroy has long been a sufferer
from rheumatism, and it is presumed
that tbe old trouble bas again assailed
her. She bas a host of friends- here
wbo regret ber sickness.
Weston Leader: Mrs. H. B. Nelson
has left her Franklin county home
stead for a visit with her daughter,
Mrs. V. H. Chastain. at Lewiston,
Idaho. She is recovering from tbe
effects of a runaway accident in wbicb
she sustained a broken arm.
Mrs. A. J. Willaby was taken very
ill Saturday nigbt at bet home on
Jefferson street, and tbe services or Ur.
Sharp were required. After several
hours severe suffering, tbe lady was
relieved and is now able to be about
ber household duties again.

Spokane, recently underwent a most
heroic operation, in which tbe tbrea
joints in eaob arm were broken, tbus
releasing the ligaments to perform
their proper functions. . Tbe young
lady is doing as well as could be ex
pected and hopes are now entertained
that she may finally regain the use
of her limbs.
VDiokNye and Niel Titts worth left
yesterday morning for Cambridge,
Idaho. Mr. Nye has a claim near
Cambridge, and has been working in
the Puget Sound warehouse here. Neil
earned a tidy little sum in tbe harvest
field. The boys will travel overland.
Mrs. Lillie Miller announces her
grand opeuing for fall and winter
dress hats, street hats and fancy mil
linery to occur on Wednesday and
Thursday, September 18 and 19. All
her old patrons and tbe ladies of
Athena and vicinity in general are in

Mrs. A. M. Gillis and Mrs. R. A.
Stewart arrived home Tuesday from
Spokaue, where they attended the
Methodist Episoopal conference for
tbe Columbia -district. The ladies
were very muoh pleased with their
visit, and saw many former Athenaites
now residing there.

parture this week, having tired of tbe
mouotony of tbe ordiuary runaway.
While engaged in fighting a windmill,
a la Don Quixote, he got tbe worst of
it, in wbioh his face was severely

Rev. Isrea.l Putnam, the new pastor
appointed by tbe Methodist Episcopal
Conference, to the pastorate of tbe M.

next Sunday morning and evening.
Rev. Curry, the retiring pastor, will
move to Weston to reside temporarily.
He has filed on timber land iu Baker
county.
Two oases of scarlet fever are re
ported iu the family of Mr. MoAlex
ander, recent arrivals in tbe city.
Customary quarantine preoantions
were taken ana no other oases have
developed. A number of oases are re
ported in the vicinity of Weston, one
case, that of Miss Lee, a sohool teaoh
er, being very severe.

sacks. Thn reason for the shortage is
that the crop is larger than anticipa
ted. The Prestou-Parton Milling

Monaay for bis home in Qalesburg,
Illinois. The old gentleman was well
pleased with Oregon, bnt as he has
lived in his home county for 70 yeaia
and is the possessor of a large fortune,

week. Charles bas been in the em
ploy of the O. R. & N. Co., for the
past two years. He recently graduat

Mr. F. B. Surbeok, an experienced
cigar dealer, will tomorrow open a
cigar store and club rooms in tne
Boddy building, north side Main street
Mr. Surbeok is an experienced cigar
maker and if the trade justifies, he
may conduot a cigar faotory in this
city. Mr. Surbeok and family are re
cent arrivals from Weiser Idaho. Ho
is well known in Walla Walla, where
he couduoted a cigar factory.
