Whenever a sore refuses to heal it Is because the blood is not "pure and healthy, as it should be, but is infected with poisonous germs or some old blood taint which has corrupted and polluted the circulation. Those most usually afflicted with old sores are persons who have reached or passed mid dle life. The vitality of the blood and strength of the system have naturally begun to decline, and the poisonous germs which have accumulated because of a sluggish and inactive condition of the system, or some hereditary taint which has hitherto been held in checlc, now force an outlet on the face, aims, legs or other part of the body. The place grows red and angry, festers and eats into the surrounding tissue until it becomes a chronic and stubborn ulcer, fed and kept open by the impurities with which the blood is saturated. Nothing is more trying and disagreeable than a stubborn, non-healing sore. The very fact that it resists ordinary remedies and treatments is good reason for suspicion; the same germ-producing cancerous ulcers is back of every eld sore, and especially h this true if the trouble is an inherited one. I David Warfleld, tbe actor, tells the following story of a good spanking that he got from his mother, which waa something of a turning point In his career. The Incident happened In San Francisco, of which city Mr. Warfleld la a native. j I "If it had not been for a bitter pun ishment meted out to me by my moth er, when I was about 9 years of age," said Mr. Warfleld, I might be doing my best acts on a flvlnsr traDeze j Instead of on the stage, and my mo6t effective 'flights' would have been j aerial instead of oral. As a youngster, me neignt of my ambition was to own a circus and to be its bright and par-1 ticular star. , In fact, I resolved that this ambition should be achieved with- j out further delay. So I summoned a few of my friends, and together we J organized a circus in the cellar of my home. My specialty was the trapeze. We had sold quite a number of seats, at a bottle, a horseshoe, old Iron, pins, etc., In fact, anything which might be converted into cash at a Junkshop af ter the performance. Then the fright ful thought struck me I had no tights what was to be done? I crept quiet ly to my mother's room and stole a pair of white stocking. I drew them over my legs, donned a pair of short trousers and there I was. "Everything went splendidly till my turn. .Then, at a crash of kettle cov ers made by the solitary member of our 'brass band, I bounced into the r'ng, got on the trapeze, made of a broomstick and clothesline, and there I swung gracefully to and fro, for a few moments and that was as far as I got with my act My mother did the rest : She had heard the rumpus In the cellar, and came to see what had caused It I can even now remember her placing my ear In her hand, and being led away. "How small a thing may thus alter the course of one's career." "A horse who has always been made to obey quickly will respond to com mands from any one, whereas the crea ture who has been petted and talked to accords, unless hungry, scant atten tion to any one. We talk to horses al together too much, and it Is a silly and dangerous custom, declares F. M. Ware in a current magazine. He adds that tbe animal's attention Is kept If the rider or driver Is silent the horse's anxiety being always to find out what his master wishes done. There is, according to an explorer, a large and fierce South 'American spider which chases men if they come too near its lurking places. On one occa slon he was pursued by one. "Riding at an easy trot over the dry grass," he writes, "I observed a spider pursuing me, leaping swiftly along and keeping up with my beast I aimed a blow with my whip, and the point of the lash struck the ground close to It when it Instantly leaped upon, and ran up the lash, and was actually within three or four Inches of my hand when I flung the whip from me." India's hunting leopard ,the cheetah, has a reputation as one of the most gentlemanly of beasts. Three Calcutta visitors to northern India were out on a tramp when they were overtaken by a thunderstorm. They espied a cave In the side of a hill and Into It they rushed. When the rain stopped they came out and found a cheetah sitting licking the heavy wet off his waistcoat and his paws. It was his cave; but rather than deprive his visitors of their shelter the polite creature had sat autslde In the driving tempest With a friendly mew and gracefully wagging his tall, the cheetah bade adieu to bis guests and walked with dignity Into his house. What he learned was that a greater or less degree of cold, or of wind, when the snow falls, and Its "lying a longer or shorter time on the ground," will occasion a difference in the weight and In the quantity of water produced ; "but If," he added, "I 'may trust tothe above trials, which I j endeavored to perform with care, snow, ! newly fallen, with a moderate gale of wind, freezing cold, will produce a (juauuiy vi water etjuai tu uuc-iruiu part of Its bulk."
