and giving careful Instructions for the
disposal of sewage. This Is followed
by directions for the disposal of ashes,
garbage and miscellaneous re'use. and
by a dissertation on heating systems
after which examples are given of
homes where modern conveniences bave
been Installed, and also hints on the
possibility of introducing them Into
houses already built. Such a bulletin
must have some Influence In spreading
the desire for home comforts, and
though many farmers may still ?ag be
hind, the Installation of the conven
iences has really gone on rapidly. There
are farm houses, genuine farm houses,
bulll and equipped out of 'arm money,
as well supplied with them as the best
city residences. They would astonish

from Lucknow to a London newspa
per. Late In the evening a traveler, the
story goes, realizing that he could nol
reach Lucknow before dark and fear

at the house of the police inspector, a
native official, and applied for shelter
for the night
"I am carrying a considerable sum
of money," said he, "and in view of ,
the dangers of the country I desire to
have your protection until I can re
sume my Journey by daylight"
The Inspector made him welcome,
gave him water and food, finally tak
ing him to a sleeping room, where lie
left him alone.
As the night wore on the traveler
was stricken with sleeplessness. Pres
ently he beard voices near his window
and strange sounds of labor. He got
up and looked out. His eyes, used to
the greater darkness of the room, dls
corned two men digging In a field at
the back of the house. He strained his
ears to catch what they were saying
and realized In a -few moments that
they were digging a grave for him.
They were In a plot with the inspector
of police to murder him for his money
and hide his body away before day
light
In panic he stole through the house
and crept out by a back door. He dash
ed through the village as noiselessly
as he could and a mile or so down the
road climbed a tree, where he sat in
safety In the shadow of the foliage
until daybreak came. Then as a pa
trol came along he slipped down to
ground and told his story to the com
manding officer.
All hands returned to the village and
there the first news that greeted them
was the mysterious disappearance of
the police inspector. The traveler lo
cated for them the grave that had been
Intended to receive him. The soldiers
opend the trench and there was found
the body of the police Inspector, horri
bly hacked.
The arrest of two ,men who had been
seen with him late the previous even
ing followed' and then the whole case
bcame simple. After arranging with
his accomplices the plot to rob and
murder the traveler the police Inspect
or started to get drunk while they
were busy digging the grave. In this
condition the idea struck him that he
would go in and do the killing himself
and so skim the cream off the booty in
stead of dividing evenly. Stooping
over the bed to grip his victim by the
throat he must have fallen forward
and passed quickly into a drunken
slumber.

A Freshman.
A freshman who had entered one of
the large universities, and was not
much accustomed to the ways either
of institutions of learning or of cities,
was returning late one evening from a
lecture. When near hia lodgings he
was halted by two masked men, who
held him up" in true metropolitan
style.
One of the men leveled the conven
tional revolver at tne young man,
while the other relieved him of Ills
watch, pocketbook and other valuables.
He made no mention of the matter
to anybody at the time, but a few days
later he reported it to the president of
the university. .
"It wasn't a great deal," he said,
"but it was more than I like to lose,
and I think it's an outrage to treat a
boy that way."
"Why didn't you tell me of this soon
er?" asked the president
'I supposed they would bring the
things back to me next morning," he
answered. "It was a couple of sopho
mores hazing me, wasn t It?"
