Jn like manner there must be some faith that some good to Bociety will result from tbe disclosures whiab are being made iu connection with the private life of some people muob in the publio eye. The testi mony of tbe sister of tbe steel official, Corey, in tbe divorce suit of his sister-in-law, that her own brother was uot a fit person to have the custody of his 16 year old son, brought out tbe state ment that the fast life of New York made a wealthy man of that city an improper persou to have children un der his control. While no snoh sweep ing indictment cau justly stand against men of wealth, there bas been a surfeit of scandal calculated to strengthen tbe impression that the testimony of Miss Corey has much of truth in it. A Pittsburg story of home distructiou has featnres of ap parent conspiracy against the peace of men and women alike wbioh appear as shameful as tbey are disgraceful. No matter what tbe leal truth may be regarding the private life of the partios involvod, it is an abnormal situation where, in or dor to secure a divorce decree, dotectives are hired to steal loltors and letters possibly forged with the deOuite purpose of blacken ing obaraoter for unworthy ends. A suit now iu the courts reveals a man uotually engaged in a sot t of divoroe brokerage business, with a fixed agree ment for payment at several stages of tbo proceedings and fiual settlement when tbe nefarious plot is at last suc cessful. ThomuH A. Edison seems to have hit upou a valuable idea outside nf elec tricity. He proposes that moulds be made fot a bouse of a given design, so that liquid ooiuirote oau lie poured in to it. He estimates that in Ibis way a bouso woith 1 3,000 can be built for $000. The thing looks feasible and if it should ever be realized will prove vuluable for the reason that building material is now so high priced that home building is practically out of the questiou. The East Oregoniau is tbe first papor iu Eastern Oregon to introduce reform spoiling. The fouotic system looks odd but it is a time savor, to say tbo least. Tbe 'intelligent composi tor" introduced tbe system in the Press Tuesday, taking tbe word "bridle." He added an extra "d," and now tbe dazies are blaming on hiz grave. Not until next Independence day will tbe new star be added to tbe flag. Tbe formal work of making a state takes time and care. If you s it in tbe E. O. it's zo. NEW USE FOR POTATOES. Chicago Record-Herald. American farmers, if they will proQt by tbe experience of farmers of Germany and France, will find in tbe new denatured alcohol act, wbicb takes effect Jaunary 1, 1007, a means of materially increasing their incomes. At tbe state department reports have just been received from Consul-General Tbaokera at . Berlin and Consul General Mason at Paris, whiob show the great market made iu those two countries for farm products by free denatured alcohol laws. In Germany over three-fourtbs of tbo alcohol dis tilled is made from potatoes, last year 91,148,182 bushels being consumed in tbe production of 76,010,927 gallons, or about 1.26 bushels of potatoes to the gallon of alcohol. During tbo last season there were 72,172 alcohol dis tilleries in operation, of which 6048 were farm distilleries, which illus trates bow closely tbe new industry can be brought home to tbe farmer. In Germany the distillation of al cohol from potatoes is one of tbe most important branches of agriculture. It alone in some cases renders farming pursuits possible in regions situated at a distance from business ceuters and possessing ligbt soil, and many farms owe tbeir existence to tbe distilleries. Abont one-third of tbe alcohol pro duced in Germnay is deuatured. "The use of spirits for driving motors, lighting rooms and pnblio places, cookiug food and produoing heat has a great future," says Consnl General Tbaokera. "In tbe United States," be con tinues, "where alcohol for use in tbe industries cau be produced more cheaply, perhaps, than in any other country in the world, the increased consumption ot tbe spirit which will take place under the provisions of tbe new law will be of great advant age to our agriculturalists." It costs in Germany about 2 cents a gallon completely to denature alco hol, and this is the greatest drawback in that country to growth in its use. The price of denatured alcohol varies from about iiO cents a gallon to 27 cents, according to strength and pur ity, and it bas to meet iu competition petroleum, whiob retails in Germany at from 18 cents to 22 cents a gallon. Iu Franco tbe alcohol used for vari ous industrial purposes is manufac tured mainly from beet roots, tbe material beiug either the refuse mo lasses from sugar factories or beets wbioh by reason of unfavorable con ditions contain nnlv a din nil tinrcwmt- 1 age of sugar. Potatoes and grain are also used to some extent, but realtive ly muob less than in Germany. In France it costs about 10 oeuts a gallon to deuaturize nloobol, because the government bas set one process, whilo iu Genuauy several different methods are permitted. This makes tbe cost of deuatured alcohol iu France iu ordinary times SO ceuts a gallon. Iu France about 8,000,000 gallons of deuatured alcohol are oou sumed annually. From the cost of manufacturing tbe raw alcohol should be deducted a subsidy paid by the government equal to about 6 oeuts a gullou. Aloohol denaturized by the formula iu use in France is not only uunooessarily expensive, but may also be purified and be used for human cousumptiou. As the United States will adopt a formula which renders the produot unlit for human cousump tiou, tbe Freuoh denaturiziug process will not be followed, and a much cheaper one may be adopted.
