the Lincoln Republican club for tbe
governorship of New Hampshire,
makes the illuminative suggestion
tbat "tbe broad issue and general
platform should be the non-interference
of tbe Boston & Main railroad or
of any other corporation in tbe poli
tics and government of tbe state."
Mr. Churchill has defined not only a
real issue but tbe most important I
issue in American politics. His plat
form applies to nearly every state and
to thenational government as well.
More and more the question in politi
cal conventions is not what indviduals
shall control the party m a
ohinery, but whether that machinery
shall be a corporation annex.
This is the issue in Iowa, where the
railroads are opposing tbe renomina
tion of Governor Cummins. ' It has
been tbe real issue in Wisconsin dur
ing La Toilette's long fight, as it was
in Michigan under Pingree. It was
the issue in New York last fall wbiob
overthrew Boss Murphy, and it was
the issue in tbe democratic state con
vention in Pennsylvania the other day
when Guffy was defeated.
Whenever tbe issue cau be clearly
drawn there is never any doubt as to
tbe result. The difficulty is in mak
ing the issue clear, and tbe chief
work which satellite politicians per
form for corporation employers is in
drawing herrings across the trail. No
more artistic example of this work can
be found than in the Iowa contest,
where the corporations took advantage
of tho Governor's tariff revision views
to make a campaign against bim on
the issue of Dingleyism.
If Mr. Churchill can make the peo
ple of New Hampshire understand
that tbe real question is whether they
are to have self-government or gov
ernment of the Boston & Maine rail
road, there cau be little doubt wbiob
they will select.
