The road to Biugbam Springs has been put in shape for travel, and the springs hotel is ready to receive guests. A large attendance of pleasure seekers was at the springs on the Fourth, where La Bracbe Bros, furnished nusic for a dance in the evening. J3r. Sharp drove to Weston Moun- tain yesterday, to visit a patient. He experienced some difficulty in making the trip, owing to the excessive - heat, the overheated condition of bis horse causing some delay. Booher has decided to occupy his mountain ranch next year. He pioposes to clear up several acres of land and But in a potato crop. Fifty acres of spring wheat sown on summer fallow land at the Barrett Pine Creek ranch, has been damaged by the hot weather to the extent that the quality of the grain is greatly iui paired and the field will be cut for bay. This piece of wheat was ex tremely rank in growth, the result being that the plant could not stand the heat. . The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Cartano yesterday drank a por tion of the contents of a small bottle of iodine. The mother heard the little one strangle and went to her assistance in time to prevent her from .swallowing much of the drug. Dr. stone was called and the child is get ting along well under his care. The mouth and throat was burned to some extent. . Mrs. J. F. Zerba, who has kbeen in ill health for a number of years, died early this morning at the Zerba place ou the Mountain, where the family went some days ago. Mrs. Zerba was afflicted with tuberculosis, but the direct cause of death was pneumonia. The deceased leaves a husband and several children. . Interment will take place in the Athena cemetery, the time of holding the funeral is not yet announced. - The machine men of Eureka flat distriot have settled on the following prions for labor iu the harvest fields: Forkers, per day, $3; header punchers, 13. 60; hoedowns, $2. 50; separator men, $5; engineers, $5; spike pitchers $2.50; loaders, $2.50. The prices for thresh ing in that district will be 7 cents per bushel for clean grain and 8 for foul. There is a scarcity of good men for the harvest fields. ; Harvesting will commence by the 10th inst. We have beard of men being kicked by horses, mules and cows, but seldom if ever does a newspaper have the op portunity to chronicle the event where a man is kicked by a hen. However, here is an instanoe. P. E. Colbern of this city has a refractory hen, and the other day when he went to take eggs from the nest, the hen actually rose up in wrath and kicked him on the hand. The band became seriously swollen and the prompt attention of a physician prevented a , case of blood poison. . , . Weston's delegation to the celebra tion at Pendleton inoluded the distin- gishedy presence - of ' Colonel' Wood. Coming home, the excursion train was loaded down and many were obliged to stand in the passage way and in the vestibules. The Colonel was con spicuous, as ' usual. In this instance he was carrying a budget of deceased Roman candles, not as mementoes of the celebration, but with the object of planting them for illumination purposes on bis Gardena ranch. Athena people for the most part attendod the Fourth of July oelobra tions at Pendleton and Helix, both of which places had splendid attrac tions, and especially was this true of Peudleton, where everything possible was done for the , comfort and con venience of the people. The excursion tram passed Athena earlier than was anticipated and sev eral who intended to spend the day in Pendleton were left A number went down ou the mixed train at noon, aud several'took the evening passenger, returning ou the excursion at- mid night. Everything was carried out as advertised, with the one exception of the balloon ascension The ascen sion did not take place, owing to a rent in the canvas, which permitted the gas to escape faster than it was possible to generate it Out at Helix a rousing old time celebration took place, aud a large number of Athena people took part in the exercises. In addition to a large number of Athena citizens being at the celebration, the "Colts" met the Helix ball team on the diamond and Fav Leerow bad a couple of bis running horses- there. The "Colts" lost to Helix by the score of 0 to 12. Mr. LeGrow took ail the races tbey would let him enter bis horses in. George Myrick w,on the. saddle pony race.
