Hanley from N. D. Showater of Colfax for (he sum of $300,000. It ia estimated that this traot oontains from 800,000,000 to 400,000,000 feet of timber, praotioally all yellow pine. The timber is in two bodies of nearly equal size, one ex tending about ten miles on both sides of Desolation oreok, with a width of 20 miles. The other is on the middle fork of tho John Day river, which flows iuto the main stream about 20 miles bolow Dosolation creek. Doubtless there Is such a thing as the newspaper habit whioh oomes to be a form ot mental 'dissipation and tends tefweakou the power of olose at tention and prevents the sort of study aud conversation whioh leads to intel lectual growth. A happy distiuutiou was receutly made by tho board of aldermen of a MuNsuohusetts city. The faot was stated that one of the policemen, in tho performance of his duty, bad ruin ed the "pants" of his five-dollar uni form. The board immediately ap propriated seven dollars to buy him a pair of trousers. Thus is virtue ever rewarded. Charles Edward Bussel illustrates Japanese astuteness by the following revelation made in the July instalment of "Soldiers of the Common Good," in Everybody's Magazine. He says: "Let me tell yon a little story about flour. Japan raises some wheat, but not enough, and for some years she has imported heavily of American flour which is our article of principal export to the Pacific. Years ago Russia leased from China a certain ample teritory in Manchuria, now tapped by the Russian railroad. This territory contains some of the beet wheat land in the world nndevelop ed. The Russians quickly perceived the wheat possibilities of this region aud had begun to get it iuto order and to establish mills and warehouses when the war came on. "The silent little brown men, 'the nation of imitators,' crumpled up the great Russian power like so much burned paper, and among the spoils of their victory was the southern half of that leased Manohnrian territory the choioe wheat land, and the rail road that ran through it. "That territory can grow wheat enough to supply all of the present western Paciflo flour trade. "The Japanese government is now engaged in spotting that legion with flour mills and developing the grow ing of wheat. In a year or two it will be ready to produoe flour. bo bony. The Japanese are never hurried. WHAT 91 HAT INSPECTION WOOL1) DO Here are the provisions iu substance, of the Beveridge meat inspection amendment: It providei for rigid post mortem inspection of the cattle, swine, sheep and goats killed for bumau consump tion iu any state, territory or auy place nuder the jurisdiction of the Uuited States, according to the rules of the Agricultural Department. All meats found healthful shall be tagged and all meats found uuhealthful shall be destroyed. It provides for reinspectiou when inspectors think any meat product has become spoiled and for destroying it, even if it has passed onoe. All slaughterers and paokers and all others engaged iu preparation of meat products must admit inspectors to all parts of their establishments. All establishments must be main tained in a sanitary manner, accord ing to the rules and regulations pre scribed by the Secretary of Agricul ture. No animal shall be allowed to enter any killing or paoking establishments unless they have been inspected and passed, and none but healthy animals shall be used. After January 1, 1907, no railroad or any other common carrier can tran sport any meat product not inspected or passed, and no ship with such art ioles on board shall be given clearance papeis, nor can any common carrier transport any meat product that is not prepared in an establishment where specified sanitary conditions do not , prevail. All canned, potted or canvassed meat products shall be labeled as in spected and passed, and shall not be offered for sale until so labeled. Severe penalties are provided for forgery labels. Inspection shall be made during both night and day, but there shall be no slaughtering in the night except in case of emergency. Fees for inspection are fixed. Packers and dealers in meat prod ucts are forbidden to offer for sale any fresh, salted, canned or otherwise packed meat products that have not been properly inspeoted and passed.
