There is a class of educators today,
says Wilbelm's Magazine, "The
Coast," who are advancing and
teaching the theory that in the raising
and training of children they sbonld
not be required and made to obey
that they should grow op and mature
as they are inclined by nature and
the making of children miud, or obey,
destroys their independence of thought
and action, thereby destroying their
free moral agency, and making them
the oreatious of another. Snoh teach
ings are the essence of anarchy and
chaos and very dangerous to tbo exis
tence of true freedom and liberty ;
they are the whims of depraved mind
and the mutteringa of a wicked heart
which convicted of etror and sin seeks
to elude and evade the righteous result
of its own thoughts and actions. The
first law of the universe is obedience,
strict and complete compliance to the
will of a ruling power. The success of
a ohild's career in life is lain upon
the sure foundation of obedienoe.
A parent's real character is reflected
on the child. No ohild outgrows its
natural instincts they must if bad,
be trained out of him and, if good, be
cultivated through obedience, if the
ohild would be a complete suooess
and beoome a power in the world. A
ohild is the creature of another. For
a ohild's existenoe another is respon
sible; to auother a child must depend
for all it can be and will be. A most
dangerous and fatal error is free-will
which is the parent of disobedience,
the result of which is rnin and chaos.

government have at length discovered
these same facts, which everybody
knew already, and they are to be made
publio unless the trust mends its ways.
The reformatory efficacy of a threat
to publish a secret which is known to
the whole nation is open to some
doubt The beef trust will be good
when it is afraid to be bad, and not
before.
Eleven amendments as proposed by
the Initiative and Referendum were
voted on yesterday, and it is doubtful
if more than one-half of the voters
knew exactly what they were voting
on. Referendum petitions have their
drawbacks as well as their advan
tages. As a rule these petitions are
understood only by tbe small per
centage of people who are given the
opportunity of signing them. The
great majority have no knowledge of
the intent and purpose of the petition
except what they may glean from the
vague inoription printed in the ballots
on eleotion day.
It is conservatively estimated that
the property loss in this county re
sulting from the flood, will amount to
a half million dollars. However, "its
an ill wind that blows no good" to
some one. . In thisinstance tbe farm
er will reap more in benefit from the
good the soaking rains accomplished
for the crops than the loss to others
will amount to.
Friends of the denatured alcohol
bill do not seem yet to be quite sure
that tbe senate amendments, though
liberal on their face, may not contain
some "joker" that will defeat tbe
purpose of tbe measure. It went
through so easily, after its long so
journ in committee, that suspicions
will crop out

not only listens sympathetically to
their suggestions, but has Invited
them to petition for any reform which
they deem desirable.
Good old Umatilla county, mend

generous rain more than offset the
damage from tbe floods. This is the
Oregon spirit, remarks the Portland
Journal.

It is said that young Mr. Rocke
feller is about to give up tbe Bible
class of wbioh he has been teacher
for a number of years because of lack
of interest of tbe members in a club
house scheme started by him. Strange
as it may seem to the Standard Oil
magnate's son, the members appear
to think that the primary object of
the Bible class is to study the bible.
The New York State Bar associa
tion, after a long investigation, finds
that David B. Hill's connection with
the insurance companies was quite
proper. The same body is preparing
the whitewash for Chauncey M. De
pew. A Michigan paper states that "Mrs.
G. M. Brown is at home looking after
the grip." It might be well to inves
tigate and see who is taking care .of
Mr. Brown's suitcase in tbe mean
time. It is to be hoped that the Umatilla
County Pioneer Association will see
its way clear to give the annual re

election returns, but tomorrow the

pened. THE WOMAN'S CLUB. .

I have been asked to correot a state
ment in a recent copy of the Press.
To tbe members of the Friday After
noon Club: To say that we were sur
prised in reading in the Press that the
Friday club had changed its name to
"Thursday Club," would be putting
it mild. We have been asked to cor
rect it, as there were only five mem
bers present at the meeting, and our
constitution says it shall be for the
eleotion of officers, and no o 1 u b
throughout tbe state ever transaots
any other business on that day. Then
again, a federated club could not do so
secretly, if it so desired. Should the
club decide so to do, which it does not
to make this cbange.it would have
to notify every member by oard of the
measure that was to come up, that it
might be voted upon, and it should be
unanimous. Then after all this the
federation board might . think it
unnecessary and refuse to call a meet
ing of the board. Then again, "Fri
day Club" is good enough for the old
members, and why should five women
and two of these new members wish
do this, is past comprehending, while'
we older members who have tried
so hard to make the club a success
and a credit to the town in which we
live, are perfectly satisfied with the
name. Of course if these five members
wish to call themselves the "Thursday
Club," let tbem do so; but tbey will
find out that the federation has do
record of it. Therefore tbey will have
no representation in the convention.
