Holland, - manager of the Statesman Publishing company at Walla Walla, after being "out all night returned a verdict in the morning in favor of the defendant Reynolds sued Holland for libel, plac ing damages at $35,000. Sanford Stone, keeper of the stal lion, Star of Kansas, owned by A. B. McEwen, was seriously injured by the horse while traveling along the road the other day. The massive jaws closed ou Stone's right arm just above the elbow, and the bold was gradually shifted to the shoulder of the helpless man. - Mr. Stone was absolutely powerless to offer any defeuse, and after going some distance was pulled from the cart to the ground. At this time the horse loosed bia hold, jumped back and scampered away. He was later captured by the keeper. Mr. Stone's arm and shoulder is terribly bruised and the horse is being taken care of by another man. The East Oregonian reports what is alleged to be an attempt to intro duce afraudulent will into the private papers belonging to the est ate of J. W. Young, of Weston, was made by Mrs. Mabel Warner, a nieoe of Young, who was raised in the Yonug family, in the bank of Weston Wed nesday afternoon. While looking over the papers Mr. Warner is said to have introduced a will giving her the bulk of the property among the papers but was detected by . Mr. Hall, who' waa closely watching the examination of the papers. Some days ago Bert Cartano re signed as manager of the ball team, because of business duties. Iu bis place the board of direotors have selected Bruce Wallaoe, who is now manager of the team. Mr. Wallace is a well known business man, an ex ball player, and knows all require ments expected of a first class ball team. All were sorry that Mr. Car tano was compelled to give up the management but in Mr. Wallace the ball team has a good man to look after its interests. That there is a scarcity of men for ranch work is declared by J. C. Spoonemore, the employment agent of Pendleton. According to Mr. Spoone more, he has been unable to socure men for several farmers who have applied to him reoently. The men have been wanted mainly for plowing, though some are needed for other work. In some instances $1.25 per day has been paid, whereas the usual rate has been $30 per mouth. . Hawes is in Santa Rosa, and also Mrs. Dr. G. W. Kinjr formerly lived there but it is not known whether she is there at present or not. Various Athena people have f riends in the stricken district. W. D. Chamberlain of this city has become a candidate for joint repre sentative between Umatilla and Mor row county, and today will be voted for iii the demooratio ; primary ; elec tion. Mr. Chamberlain has served two terms as county clerk and one term as representative in . the Oregon legislature. . , . Tuesday Mrs. William McBride celebrated the auniversary of her birth by inviting to her home all the ladies who took part in the "Milk maids' convention" which took place some weeks ago. Refreshments were served and the afternoon passed social ly. Mrs. McBride was presented with a beautiful picture by the guests. The largest real estate deal to take plaoe in this county for years was con- sumated Wednesday, when the G. W. Hunt ranoh, near Foster, was sold to the Union Stockyards company of Troutdale for $175,000. William Dougherty, president of the stockyard company, took possession as soon as the deed was signed up. Jim Narcisse, a Umatilla Indian, Was found dead near Cayuse Station yesterday morning, the indications be ing that he committed suicide. He had been drunk the day before at Ad ams. Last year he tried to shoot him self while with a fishing party near Weiser, Idaho. However, be failed in the attempt. . The theme for the morning sermon at the Methodist church is "Mis sions." In the evening the second of the series on the "Kingdom" will tie delivered. The public is invited, especially those who may not be in sympathy with the work of missions, to attend the morning services. Call for Bids .
