Principal Gubser of the Weston pubilo schools and bis corps of teach ers, attended the teachers' institute in this city Saturday. Grndarua Kilgore. mother of Jesse Kilgore, the well known Weston farm er, died at the home of her son last evening, aged 103 years. Gripp was the cause of death. Other members of the family including Jesse Kilgore and wife are ill with the malady. P. T. Harbour, a promineut young man of Weston, was in town yester day. Mr. Harbour called at the Press office and before leaving added his name to the Weston colony of Press readers. Mr. Harbour was on his re turn home from a business visit to Wallula, Pasco and Keunewick, Wash. Prof. Cherry of Peudleton, ia in the city today on business. ' Mrs. A. L. Jones made a business visit to Weston this afternoon, John Bryant of Cayuse, was ap pointed stock inspector of Umatilla county by the county court yesterday to fill the vacancy caused by thd resignation of A. J. Beau. That the United States government will establish an experiment station of 40 acres in extent ou the East Umatil la irrigation project is now an assured fact, says the East Oregoniau. A tract of laud will be set aside and re served for this purpose and it will be specially prepared for the growth of every imaginable crop known to the semi-tropic and temperate zones." Tharp Bros, have started up work at their new chon mill. Thev have better facilities for handling rolled barley and wheat than they did unor to the fire. The mill is conveniently situated in the south part of the building. The machinery has been thoroughly overbauld and the mill has a capacity. of one and a half tons per nour.. The report that George, the missing state line farmer, was seeu in Pen dleton, has turned out to be a myth. Muoh has been printed concerning the problematical whereabouts of " the mystical individual, but we know of one newspaper in which rumors ' con cerning him will not appear again; ex cept he gets in with a coroner's vouc- er or tagged with a writ of endorser ment from a Pinkerton detective, cer tifying that the same is the aforesaid George. T. M. Briokman, of the Portlaud Oregouian, is in towu today arranging, matters in commotion with the con test of that paper for sending 23 young ladies for a 15 days' tiip to the Yellowstone National Park iu July. The young lady who has ac cepted the nomination from Athoua is Miss Jeanette Manasse and ballot box for reieiviug votes has been in stalled with L. A. Uitbens. Contest closes June 1st, and the highest iu each of the- 23 districts, of which Atheua is in district No. 21, gets the trip. Full returns of the voting and all particulars of the coutest will be given in the Oregonian every Wednes day and Sunday. Sheared 4600 Sheep. The salubrious climate of Umatilla county is again demonstrated, says a Pondleton paper. Rugg Bros., the well known sheep men, have just finished sheariug 4630 mutton sheep, which will be shipped out to Seatlte markets at the rate of three cars per week. The sheep have not suffered with the cold, although clipped in the middle of winter and are gaining in flesh every day. In any other of the northwest states this per formance would ordinarily result iu great loss on account of the severe winter weather, but in Umatilla coun ty it is a safe proceedure, accom panied with littler if any danger of loss. The entire herd of 4600 head will average 100 pounds per head and are in excellent coudition. The wool has not been weighed yet aud the average weight of the fleeces has not been ascertained but it is known that. the. sheep sheared well, since they were large and strong aud in good condition. , Heat tbe Music Cure.
