Lsten to what be says: "Merry Christmas I Happy New Year I That's the greeting of the sea son, though we all know that it is a transparent fraud; that only children, idiots and drunken fools or either hap py or merry. There now, Maverick will tell the troth, though the heavens fall." We'll waste our fortune on the wager that the Maverick man is a dead one; that he is a grouchy old "baa been ;" that he never rubbed tip against the bright side of anything in his life; that he is a sour, old chronio dyspeptio ; a stranger to the band-clasp of good-fellowship; that God's sun shine has never played hide and seek in the cookies of bis heart, and that in the stream of life he is one of the punctured bubbles that will never rise to tbe surface. The Milton Eagle's Freewater cor respondent "wired" in a special news item the other day. We suppose a "wire" wag- used; anyway the item was credited to a Freewater date line. It concerned a fight between two women at a publio dance. However, as the Freewater Times does not veri fy the news item in question, we may suppose that tbe Eagle has displayed a streak of "yellow." Can it be possible that it is thusly, and that we are to look forward to a genu iue comic section and all that? But gee, it may have been a clean cut "scoop I" The statement that the O. B. & N. will abandon Union station, and that Hot Lake will become tbe junction, is going tbe rounds of tbe state press. The Uuiou Republican makes a de nial and says the statement has fiz zled out iuto "hot air." All of whioh leads us to say there was something "hot" iu the rumor after all. LegiouB of "Jim" Maloney's friends in Athena are pleased to hear of bis promotion to cashier of the Pendleton Savings Bank. "Jim" is of the kind that does things, and while he is olimbiug up, there are instances that may be cited where he has taken a friend or two along with him. Mr. Tufts, a Montana millionaire, has just beeu found guilty of perjury, which he seemed to regard as neces sary iu swearing away tbe wife whom ho had married when he was a poor oow puncher. Otherwise there might have been senatorial possibili ties for him in Montana. So popular are Moorhouse pictures, and so great bag been the demand for tbe collection recently issued in book form from the press of the East Ore gonian, that a second and larger edi tion will soon be under way. The Athena Press is the recipient of a volume of these celebrated Indian pictures and views. Mr. Moorhouse's fame as a photographer long ago became national, and his Indian pictures have added life and color to tbe illustrations of all the high class as well as art publications. The volume is worthy a niche in every library in the land. In addition to tbe splendid Indian pictures, many beautiful poems and sketches lend in terest and enchantment to the pages. Typographically, the edition is excel lent and tbe press work superb the sort that stamps the "E. O." print shop as being in the front rank of ,the good ones. Tbe coal famine continues, and Baker City seems to be in a worse pre dicament from fuel shortage than any other point in the Inland Empire. Baker has all kinds of mines except coal mines, hence in this respect the coal famine may be felt more by tbe people there than elsewhere. It is said Baker City residents are resurrecting wood stoves. It is good to hear that some kind of a resurrection has struck the "new Denver," though it be a cast-iron proposition. Tbe women who smote Smoot were smitten in return when he remarked that he'd vote to reestablish tbe army canteen. He is a tit-for-tat senator, it is evident. Of oourse those gallant 71 in the house who "stood pat" and voted against the Philippine tariff bill, are waiting for their reward. YOUTH 13 WANTED- Foul teen -Year-Old Corbett Griggs Dis appears From Walla Walla. Local officers have been notified to be on the lookout for young Corbett Griggs, who is missing from Walla Walla, having left bis borne there January 8. The boy, who is about 14 years of age, was sent up town by his mother to purchase some goods. Several hours passed, and when he did not return the parents notified tbe officers, who made a search of the city for the missing boy, but were unable to looate him. Why he should ohoose to run away from big home is not known, as it is claimed he has had no trouble with bis parents and the last time seen was in a oheerful mood. It is thought he will be heard from soon, in some place where he has gone. He wore, at tbe time of his disap pearance, a black hat, dark trousers, light colored coat, heavy light color ed overcoat and alligator shoes. He is described as having black hair and brown eyes. Taylor's, Petition. During the past few days a petition to Governor Chamberlain has been in circulation here asking a pardon for Moses Taylor, convioted of attemp ted arson. The petition recites thut it was the evideuce of Monroe Palmer, one of the men ho was alleged to have hired, and that be does not deem it just that be should be punished on the testiuouy of au ex-convict. He also asks for another trial. A JUST HKIU'KK. (Oregonlan.) One of tbe sonsible things left to the Mail Orders a Specialty credit of tbe Oregon Development League and the Oregon Press Associa tion is tbe forceful protest against tbe term "Webfoot," as applied in facet ious vein to the state of Oregon and that of "mossbacks" as applied in tbe spirit of alleged "fun" to Oregon ians. Tbe people of Oregon are them selves to blame for these designations, though perhaps in tbe outset tbey did not intend to cast a slur upon their state, its climate or its people by ac cepting them. These terms have, in tbe light of trntb and civilization, be come a reproach, and, instead of re buking their ntteranoes and tbe slur that tbe words imply, too many of our people have echoed them, or joined in the laugh to which they have too often given rise. It is high time that these terms were discontinued, and the misrepresentation of Oregon cli mate and energy for' which they stand be rebuked by loyal Oregonians. In Western Washington, where the rain fall is at least as great as in the Willamette Valley, the people speak proudly of their state as the "ever green state, "and they have no sobri quet of scorn to bestow upon its citiz ens. Oregon has been singularly lacking in what may be termed family pride in this respect, and in the stupid re iteration of stale jokes about tbe cli mate. It is silly enough when a Californian bumptious and self-satisfied declares that it rains . thirteen months of the year in Oregon; but we can accredit this exaggerated speech to bis ignorance and bis intense desire to be funny at onr expense, and let it pass. But when Oregonians accost each other on the unusually stormy, disagreeable morning with the words, "This is Oregon weather," or "Oregon is herself again," and simi lar remarks reflecting unjustly upon the climate of Oregon, they betray a disloyalty which deserves rebuke and of which tbey should be ashamed. State pride should forbid such ex pressions, even if truth were not dis regarded, as it is, in making them. Let Oregonians refrain from these be littling expressions. State pride is closely allied to family pride, and they who disregard the promptings of tbe one or tbe other make a blunder of which decency and selfrespect are ashamed. GIRLS AND CHAPERONS. Spokesman-Review. A social contrast between Canada and the United States was brought ont at a meeting of a mothers' club in Chicago the other day when Mrs. Oldwright of Toronto expressed sur prise that young women in Chicago and other American cities are per mitted to go to dances without chap erons. : Several women present who have grown np sons deepened the shock by declaring that not only was this condition tolerated, but that young women often invited their es corts over tbe telephone to take them to dances. This lack of regard for the conventions was deplored by tbe clnb, and it was declared that it could not be conductive to good results. The subject is an excellent one for discussion by mothers' clubs every where and for the members of those clubs to endeavor to bring home to other mothers who are not in club cir cles. That the condition so deplored by these women do exist can not be denied, but while American girls pride themselves on the faot that they are independent and selfreliant enough to take care of themselves without the aid of a chaperon it must be admitted that in the larger cities particularly there are numerous ocoasions when it would be muoh better for them if the chaperon system was adopted. There are, of oourse, many dances, at private houses or in halls under private auspices, and at whioh there will be a number of married women and the mothers of many girls, at which it would seem superfluous to require the attendance of a obaperon simply for the journey to and from the house where tbe dance was being held, but there are many occasions during a season of festivities when a closer adherence to the old rule would be desirable. Tbe remedy lies with the mothers, but there are large numbers of mothers who are as careless in regard to the subject as their daughters and who feel that the girls are wise enough and strong enough to dispense with any species of chaperonage. FAMK'S PATHWAY. Professor C. H. Judd of Yale uni versity has been appointed direotor of the Yale summer school, to succeed Professor E. H. Sueatb, who resigned on account of poor health. Dr. Iguats Jastrow, professor of political economy in the University of Berlin, has been elected president of the Commercial university, which the Senior Mechanics' corporation will open in the fall of 1906. Senator McLaurin of Mississippi had very limited opportunities for an early education, having been raised ou a farm aud attended the neighboring schools occasionally until 16 years of age, when he joined the confederate army as a private. ; The father of Campbell-Bannerman, the new prime minister of England, laid the foundation of his fortune in Glasgowjby abolishing in his placejof business the system then knowu as "prigging."
