Howard EvauH, recently appointed fruit inspootor for Umatilla county, ia calling attention to the Russian thistle, which has already obtained considerable foothold in this county. He warns the farmers of its destruot iveuww. This obnoxious weed is very plen tiful in the Hudson Bay district, where it is found alouft the roads and irrigating ditohes. The weed is cou llned to a limited area in the county, and it the county commissioners real ize iu time the great importance of its total eradication it may be stamped out now and forever. It is olosely related to the Amerioan tumble Weed, aud ia an annual coming from seed each year. Making its ap pearance in April aud May, the first two loaves are teuder shoots, resem bliug grass blades, and iu the early stages are young aud teuder aud are eaten by stock. It blossoms wheu two mouths old, and then increases in a d&se, bushy mass from two to three feet hih aud from four to six feet in diameter, every brauch being lined its eutire length with seed. Uuder wind pressure it suaps off and bonnds before the wind, distributing the seed in every direotiou, uutil stopped by a feuce, ditch or vegetation, having scattered its seed over miles of terri tory. It takes complete possession of tho land, crowding out other plants. Mr. Evans holds that it is crimiual to allow it to beoouie established in this oouuty aud state, and calls on the farmers and county commissioners to take precaution against its spread in Umatilla oonnty. Capture of the Arab Brigand by the Basha of Tangier Described by Himself. The Brigand Raissuli, who captured Perdicaris, tells his own story in Les lie's Monthly Magazine. "Now, some eight years ago, Abd-er-Rahman Abd-el-Saduk, then the basha of Tangier," said Raissuli, "End ing that he could not subdue the re sistance of our party by the troops at his disposition, made overtures of peace, and, sending nt a safe con duct, invited me to come and discuss a friendly solution of our difficulties. I went to his official residence alone and unarmed and, while we sat at a table (literally about a tray) I was suddenly seized, bound, hurried to prison and heavily ironed, an 1 i band was riveted about my net . handcuffs with intervening bars that I could not bring my two nan.-! together were fastened on my wrU . and sirail.tr letters were also rlvii about my anUlea. Then 1 was s Mogador anu there confl&ed with ; lowest criminals, who teeied oi . and who swarmed with injects t latter cut into my flesh as did also . irons. Thus I remained four i years, chained to the walls so t n . could not He down, until at last i . neck band and handcuffs were i. moved. After that I ptssed still an other whole ear in that horrible pris on. Do you now wonder," he as..i,!, "at the oath I swore to be reventp.. upon so treacherous an enemy? Wi know," he continued, "of the column of government troops lately sc t against us. They remained in the va -ley, yonder, capturing defense" peasants at the plow and vlol&tir their daughters, of whom 18, amo them children of six years old, ha -been thus dishonored. Then came u. treacherous capture of the M'sorra deputation who went at Had Abd-er-Selam Abd-el-Sadu':'s summons, bear ing, not arms, but presents in their hands. Then I determined to seize upon some European and to hold him till theee men should be released and until the Abd-el-Saduks make restitu tion for the wrongs we have suffered at their hands."
