McBride, her daughters Edyth and Farrel, and Miss Eva Rider, leave this evening for Port land, here they will visit the fair, and next week will go to Seaside for an outing on Clastop beach, before re turning home. Froonie and will conduct a first class bakery here. The city council has given Mr. Prendergast permission to construct an oven with in the precincts of the established fire limits. Mrs. Willis Bush, who is &t the home of her sister, ' Mrs. Fanny Wright, in Walla Walla, is reported as not so well as heretofore, and Mr. Bush, and Miss Gladys are in attend ance upon her. Mrs. Hardy Mansfield returned from Walla Walla Wednes day and reports Mrs. Bush somewhat improved since the first of the week. xEhe first automobile that ever went doVn the Ryan prade was driven by A. Ennkel, of Pendleton. 1 A conple of weeks ago with his wife and child ren he safely descended the grade in a Cadillac machine. It is considered quite a feat, though in this instance the machine glided safely down the long, rocky road. Joseph Rainville and family have returned from a three week's visit with relatives at Nez Perce and Lew is ton. Mr. Rainville is well pleased with the country up there, and the family making the journey overland enjoyed the trip very much. The Rainville boys, who left here some years ago, are doing well at Nez Perce and the health of Grandma Rainville has considerably improved of late. . ; The Junior and Epworth Leagues of the Methodist church will give a lawn social at the home of Mr. Wm. Tomp kins Tuesday evening, July lltb. Home-made and factory ice cream and cake will be served. Ice cream and cake 10 cents. The proceeds will be applied on church indebtedness. Miss Dolly Bloch of Spokane, who for months has been an invalid, pass ed through Athena on last . evening's train for Hot Lake, Union county. The young lady was accompanied by her sister Miss Carrie, and her uncle, Julius Levy, of Walla Walla. Many Athena friends gathered at the station to greet Miss Bloch. J. W. Jenkins, who has beeu at tending the convention of the Oregon Christian Missionary Society at Tur ner, will return today and hold serv ices Sunday morning and evening. Mr. Jenkins had the honor of being elected president of the society for the coming year. (The churches in the state had a net gain of 1000 members daring the past year and the conven tion of the society was the best in its history. . .
