HEIIEY ON MITCHELL THE SELFISHNESS OF TEE SEH ; ATOR STRONGLY DENOUNCED "He CalU It Persecution; We Call It Vindication of the Lawi of 1 the Country." Senator Mitchell was never ar raigned in severer language than Dig' trict Attorney Heney used in finishing his summary of the government's evi dence Wednesday afternoon at the federal comt, says the Journal. Words were not minced and there was no equivocation of meaning. -The government's attorney told the jury why he believed the venerable senator at the bar to be one of the most con snmmate masters of selfishness. The statements developed in connection with a review of Bobertson's testi mony. Returning the defendant's ao cusations against the government,- the district attorney said : . ' "He calls it persecution ; we call it vindication of the laws of this county. We call it performance of duty. They call us scoundrels and other things for performing our duty." Again in a burst of oratory, the district attorney said: "It is not a disgrace to have one the Oregon United States senators convict ed of a crime, but it is a disgrace to the state of Oregon if its citizenship has fallen so low that a jury can be found in the state who will say that we will not enforce the law because we and the rest of our citizens have placed the one who has viola t ed the law in high office. If you have one in high offioe who has committed a crime , that is ten thousand times more reason why you should enforce the law and let him and every other man understand that whom you honor in Oregon in the future is not above the law." Again: "Here is the selfishness of this man, who would not only have old age perjure itself to save him, but would reach out to this young man, Robertson, whom he had raised in his office, under his eyes, and unhesitat ingly sacrifice him by having him commit perjury that he might go free. "He lets Tanner sweat here aud lets Tanner make the sacrifice and does not even read his telegram to Robertsou uutil Robertson is subpoenaed. It matters not to him who is sacrificed, so long as he can go free. "He denounces Tanner aud Robert sou as conspirators, because they would not perjure themselves, and stay perjured, to save this defendant. So this selfish dofeudant considered any man. His friends were only those wno would commit perjury aud stay perjured." Centennial Notes. The attendance at the Lewis and Clark Exposition on June 21, G. A. R. day, was 16,678. There were about 3000 veterans present, aud appropriate exercises were held. Last Saturday, Seattle day, was one of the biggest days at the Lewis and Clark fair. The Northern metropolis sent several hundred citizens to at teud the exercises. For the purpose of stimulating night attendance at the fair the man agement has devisod a coupon arrange ment which will enable the purchaser of a fifty-cent admission ticket to take iu twentv-flve cents worth of shows : on the Trail free of charge. , Saturday, July 1, is Taeonia day at the fair, and a big delegation of -"ttnnmo linnutafa urtll ntfoifl (Tin fa I that day. Taeonia has beeu very t'oh iu evidence ever since the ning of tho exposition, by reason ts catchy motto, "Watch Tacoma VW." .Rabbi Emil G. Hirsch, of Chicago, probably the most distinguished rabbi in America, will preach in the Audi torium at the fair on Sunday, July 2. Sunday services ul the exposition are hold at 4 o'clock iu the afteruoou. The gates are opeuod at noon aud the Sunday admission has been reduced to 25 cents. The Trail shows are not per mitted to run on Sundays. Trail day, when the amusement street of the exposition is to be dedi cated, has been postponed one week, from Juno 24 to July 1. The change was made iu order to allow several shows, which were established on the shore of Guild's Lake after the Trail hud outgrown its original quarters on the bridge, to get ready for the open ing. On Trail day there will lie tipwchos and a big parade. The biggest patiiotio eolebation ever held in the west will bo that at the Lewis aud Clark exposition ou the Fourth of July. The commercial organizations of the city aud the uiau agemdut of the exposition will co oper ate iu making the celebratiou an up roarious success. In the evening there will be elaborate pyrotechnio displays on Guild's Lake, and Mount Hood will be illuminated by the use of a great quantity of red fire. One of the notable visitors at the Lewis and Clark fair last week was W. R. Shaunon of Fowler, CaL, who is the sou of George Shannon, the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark exploring party of a hundred years ago. George Shaunon was known ns "the boy Shannon, on ac count of his youth. After the ex pedition he became a lawyer, aud was a distinguished jurist in Missouri. His son, the exposition visitor, is now 80 years of age. He remembers hear ing bis father tell thrilling tales about his experience on the long journey from St Louis to the mouth of the Columbia, which the fair at Portland is commemorating. Matcalf Balk. Secretary Matcalf of the depart ment of commerce and. labor will, it is asserted, throw up bis job as a cabinet officer when the summer wanes, because of the summary dir ections given him by the president to issue orders to his subordinates to deal leniently with the Chinese. It is asserted that Matcalf did not issue the order without showing the presi dent plainly that he did not wish to do so because he felt the situation one that should be dealt with in another way. Matcalf comes from California and is in favor of Chinese exclusion. He probably is the best equipped man in the cabinet to talk on the subject Secretary Taf t, to whom the question was referred for quasi administrative advice, took the position that Matcalf being a Californian was prejudiced agaiust the Chinese beyond the poirt where advice would be accepted as safe and sane.
