Barrett was one of the speak ers at the good roads convention in Pendleton yesterday. A dust storm raged yesterday and the always busy housewife is more busy than ever today. The family of Louis Bergevin has moved from Pendleton to the farm south of town for the summer. Misses Bertha Baker and Alcy Foss aie home for vacation, having closed their respective terms of school. Frank Frazier, the well known Pen dleton horseman, was kicked by a horse Saturday and seriously injured. McBride returned last night from Portland, where he went as a del egate to the LO.O.F. grand lodge. "Son" was aged 9 years. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Business of importance.. Freewater Times: W. D. Chamber lain, one of Athena's busy merchants and a prince of good fellows, was a business visitor in the city last Mon day. Mrs. W. S. Perry was in the city yesterday, having come Tip from Pen dleton to attend the f nneral of the child of her sister, Mrs. John Ban ister. ' A canton of Patriarchs Militant, the Uniform rank of the Odd Fellows, was instituted last night at Pendle ton by Major Robert Mobley of Boise City. Mr. Fred Gross and George Gross and family are deeply thankful for the many kind acts of friends and neighbors during the long and fatal illness of Mrs. Fred Gross. jrMrs. Claude Reeder and ber sister, Miss Ellen Owens, left Sunday for a visit to the fair at Portland. They will also visit friends and relatives at other points in the valley. Judge Hartman, Frank Frazier .and others of a committee sent out by the commercial association of Pendleton in the interests of the good roads con vention, were in town Saturday. Athena fans who attended the Pendleton-Walla Walla ball game in the Garden City Sunday, report a decided ly one sided victory for Walla Walla. From reports the Pendleton team was out classed, the score being 19 to 0. In the circuit conrt Saturday the case of the state of Oregon against Drs. Turley and Casshatt of Weston for assault or. the person of Dr. Best, was tried and Dr. Casshatt pleading guilty was fined $75, and Dr. Turley released. Athena Camp No. 171, W. O. W., will conduct memorial services at the grave of Virgil Smith, in the Athena cemetery Sunday afternoon, at which time the monument will be unveiled. The services will take place at 2 o'clock, the Woodmen falling in line at the hall at 1 :S0. All Woodmen are requested to be present vTh 9 months old infant daughter of Sir. and Mrs. John Banister died Sun day evening and interment took place in the Kees cemetery yesterday. The little one had been ill for several weeks, spinal meninigitis being the di rect cause of death. Many Athena people were among the excursionists Sunday to Walla Walla, who were not connected with the W. O. W. A pleasant day was experienced by all, a number of whom took advantage of the occasion to visit friends in the garden city. There will be a church reunion and basket dinner at the Christian church in this city next Sunday, June 18. An excellent program has been perfected for the occasion, and the prominent feature will be a sermon by N. H. Brooks, pastor of the Christian church at Pendleton. Everyone is requested to yeome and bring well filled baskets. (pAt a " special meeting of the - city council last evening Joe Banister and Mitt Bush were awarded the the con tract to haul pipe and material for the construction of the new water system. . Their bid was for 80 cents a ton for hauling cement and water pipe and 80 cents per yard for hauling rock and sand. They were required to put up a bond for $100. Dr. L. G. Tufts,' state superintend ent of the Anti-Saloon League, was in the city Sunday. In the morning he spoke at the Christian church, and in the afternoon he addressed a union meeting at the M. E. church on the subject ol temperance. Tonight he speaks in' Adams and tomorrow night in Helix. On Monday, June 19, a county convention of the prohibition ists will be held in Pendleton to or ganize a new movement to "secure the balance of power" among the parties. "The League;" so Dr. Tufts states, "advocates standing by such men as Senator Walter M. Pierce for being loyal to the temperance interests in the legislature. " Card of Thank.
