McBain, the Wallowa county mur derer wno killed two men because they jumped bis homestead, has been sentenced to life imprisonment, and taken to the penitentiary. The county clerk has sent out the blanks for tbe local option election to be held in the precincts of North Mil ton, South Milton and Valley, on June 6. Athena implement dealers are now giving their attention to cutting ma chinery, and the boys are assembling together numerous mowers, binders and headers. Mr. and Mrs. Lenz of Victoria, B. C. who have been visiting at the Manasse home in this city, left last evening for Portland. They will proceed from there to California.' There will be no morning services at the Baptist church Sunday on ac count of the memorial services at the Christian church. Preston at Freewater last week. Mrs. Rebecca Fountain, wife of P. L. Foutainn, died at her home in Klamath Falls, May 22, aged 47 years. Mrs. Fountain was a sister-in-law of Mrs. F. M. Mansfield of this city, r It is reported here that David Lav ender, city marshal of Weston, has been appointed postmaster at that place. M. A. Baker the retiring post master, has held the position several years. Mrs. Martha Mays, mother of Mrs. C. A. Barrett, accompanied by her granddaughter, Miss Jennie Mays, of Dayton, Wash., is visiting relatives and friends in the city. Mrs. Mays' home is in Elgin. Cox & McEwen are putting in a hot water system at the residence of Prof. J. S. Henry this week. A new range, high pressure water tank, bath tub, sink and toilet are among the conven iences being installed. Dr. G. C. Eschelman, supreme in structor of the United Artisans, met with the local lodge Monday night The- United Artisan lodge was or ganized here some weeks ago and will hereafter meet in the new lodge hall on the first and third Monday nights of each month. The Memorial services will be held in the Christian church Sunday morn ing at 11 o'clock, J. W. Jenkins preaching the sermon. The mem bers of Gettysburg Post No. 83 invite all to attend the sermon. It is learned that the entire 8th grade of the Athena publio school passed in the examination of the state questions. The names of those in the grade, together with the percentage, will be published in Tuesday's Press. A large number of people from other towns have been attending the Mo Carty meetings at tbe Methodist church. Wednesday night there was a large delegation from Pendleton, and yesterday a number of Adams people were in attendance. ! Wm. Berry picking will be their businss for awhile, after which they will probably join a party and visit the fair at Portland. jXNert Tuesday is Decoration Day. The members of Gettsyburg Post, old soldiers and citizens will form on Main street at 10 o'clock a. m. and march to the cemetery. Aiter the exercises there all will return to the Christian church where the program for the day will be concluded. Mrs. E. L. Barnett went over to Milton Wednesday, where she will visit her parents, and also the Re bekah lodge in her official capacity of Grand President. Tuesday night Mrs. Barnett met with her home lodge in Athena, which gave her an ovation in the shape of a dainty banquet, and a most interesting session was held. - Cards are out announcing the mar riage of Mr. Bruce W. Wallace, of this city, and Miss Margaret M. Rus sell to take place in Boise City, Idaho, Monday, June 5. Mr. Wallaoe is pro prietor of the Pioneer drug store and his fiancee is one of the Idaho capit al's favorite daughters. The young oouplewill be at home in Ahtena after June 10. NyGeorge and Rollo Brown have a Host of friends in Athena who are always pleased to hear of them. This week the Brown paper, the Central City, (Ia.) News-Letter, contains the announcement of the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. D. Brown. The Press hopes that little George Albert will grow up to be as good a news paper man as his father.? Rollo is stiirdoing good work on the diamond and draws a good salary in a league team. Wednesday, June 7, is the date de cided upon for the Christian church Sunday School picnic. The Krebs grove near Adams has been secured for the festivities and will be put 'in readiness for the picnic The Baptist and Methodist Sunday schools ere specially invited to join with the school, and all others who will come, whether -attending any Sunday school or not Let all come and bring well filled baskets and help to make the day oue long to be remembered. A literary and musical program will be rendered, and any who may be willing to assist will confer a favor by com municating with Pastor Jenkins.
