A RAILROAD SURVEY IS W. & C S. EOAD TO BE EXTENDED? Surveyor! On the Ground to Ban Lice South Leading From Athena. Engineer W. G. Sayles and a party of surveyor! arrived ia the city Sunday night, and yesterday the men were en gaged in making stakes down at Gillis' lumber yard. At this time there ia not much to be given out for publication. Railroad companies are not inclined to cherish newspaper interviews and (heir em ployes don't deal out information in carload lots. The surveyors are on the ground to survey for a proposed extension of the W. k 0. R. Where the line is to run or where it is to stop is not exactly known save to the Northern Pacific peo ple. It starts from Athena and from present indications will lead southwest of town. It is known that Mr. Sayles has been driven over the reservation and is said to be favoiably impressed with the excellent agricultural possibilities of that portion of Umatilla county. It is said an excellent grade is afford ed up Spring Hollow to the head of Thorn Hollow, and there is a -possibility that the Northern Pacific is looking this way for its reported extension into the Grand Ronde and Wallowa valleys. Altai I 'kaatfUaf aw arc Weston Leader Man Compliments Two of Our Luonl Firm. Clark Wood, editor of "Weston's best paper," while in Athena the other day was observant as usual. Athena stores evidently appealed to him as be ing about right, for we note in a re cent issue of the Leader the following complimentary mention made con cerning two local firms: "In keeping with Athena's progress is the steady growth and constant advance ment of its mercantile enterprises. Bright and attractive are the new quart era of the Athena Fair Store in the soci ety ball just completed. A white finish gives the interior a cheerful appearance, and the immense stock is splendidly displayed. Mr. Jartnan has also secured the basement of the building, and this is filled with crockery and other goods. Certainly "Dan" has reason for pride in showing the Athena Fair's new home to its many friends throughout the East End. "Among the most enterprising firms in enterprising Athena is that of Ely k Scott, grocers, who are now doing busi ness at their new store in the Barrett building. This has been admirably ar ranged, the double deck affording op portunity for artistic display that has been utilized in full measure. Viewed from the street, the bright array of grocer's goods, ingeniously arranged in pyramids and other attractive groupings, presents an appearance at once pleasing and tempting. Walter Ely and Joe Scott are old normal boys, and Weston friends are glad to note the substantial evidence of their prosperity in busi ness." aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaBaaaaaaaaaaaaw REPORT OP THE CONDITION OF THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF ATHENA No. 451G.
