COLONISTS COMING NEW BANK FOR ECHO Pianos of Worth. HARRIMAN SYSTEM EEDUCES BATES TO THE WEST. Eeduction ot One-Third to All Points Eastern Oregon, Washington and Northern Idaho. What is probably the most extraordi nary inducement that has yet been made to encourage immigration to Oregon, Washington and Northern Idaho, of settlers from the middle west, is an nounced by the traffic department of the O. R. A N. Co. and Southern Pacific Oregon lines, says a Portland paper. Effective February 15 to May 15, the rate on movables of colonists will be re duced one-half, from the Missouri river to points in the Willamette valley on the Southern Pacific Oregon lines, and one third to all poiats in Eastern Oregon and Washington and in Northern Idaho. The rates will be made effective dur ing the periods in which low one-way passenger rates are named, under what is termed colonist or home seekers' rates combining to enable intending settlers to migrate at a minimum cost. A HOESE BOOM. Government Will Want 1000 Horses for Army. Walla Walla, Jan. 12. A big boom in the horse market is expected shortly or as soon as the contracts for furnishing the American army in the Philippines with 1000 horses are awarded. Word has been received in Walla Walla that these contracts will be awarded at Se attle some time the latter part of Jan uary and local horse dealers are expect ing a recurrence of the palmy days when the English government was buy ing up horses for use in the South African war. It was then that the despised cayuse jumped into favor and instead of being the scum of the horse industry it was soon found that the little Indian pony was best adapted for cavalry purposes and consequently commanded as good a price as the American bred horse. "As soon as the contracts are awarded we are expecting a horde ot buyers to invade the local horse market," a well known dealer said yesterday. "The government wants 10(fyy horses for the use of the army in the Philippines and about the onlyplace to get them is in the Oregon and Washington horse range' Horses are worth money these' days and contract ors will find that they will have to pay a fair pripS or go further east in which event transportation will have to be figured in. ' E AKIN FOR SUPREME JUDGE. Move to Nominate Him Said to lie On Foot Among Friends. Baker City, Jan. 12. The friends of Judge Eakin, judge of the eighth judi cial district, are quietly planning to secure for him the nomination for su preme judge at the next state republican convention, The members of the bar of Eastern Oregon think unanimously that at lotiBt one member of the supreme court should come from this section of the state. They argue that Judge Eakin is especially fitted for a supreme justice, by reason of the fact that he is familiar with mining and ' irrigation litigation, two subjects that of lute years have often occupied the attention of the su '"Cfime court, and in the years to come will come up for adjudication in the court of last resort more frequently. r; "I was troubled with utotn nchlrnublH. Farmers Would Be Willing to Take Stock If a Banking Bouse Is Started. . An Echo merchant is authority for the statement that a bank is badly needed there. lie is quoted as saying: "More money changes hands here by check than any place 1 know of. When a cattle buyer buys a herd of cattle he draws a check, and when the stockman buys hay he draws a check. As these checks are usually for large amounts, money must be sent from Pendleton, making a delay of a day or two. The stores are always short of ready money and have from a few dollars to many hundreds in checks awaiting a chance to be sent to, Pendleton to cash. The farmers of the vicinity would be willing to take stock in such an institution if one would come here." Artificial Teeth.
