STAMP OUT MANGE UMATILLA STOCK MUST BE DIP PED SATS CHRISTIE. Cost of Dipping 30 cents per Head Finds 1800 Head of Affected Hones and Cattlo at Echo- Pendleton, April 26.-Deputy State Veterinarian John Christie is on the war path and the cause of the trouble is scab and mange among the cattle and horses of the county. Yesterday as he was cruising around town he found a bunch of nine mangy Indian cayuses tied back of the Kunkel implement house on Main street. The horses were rubbing up against every thing in sight and it seemed the mic robes were so thick that they could al most be seen with the naked eye. Dr. Christie declared war on the spot and ordered the horses killed, but they were sent back to the reservation instead. The Indians have -been warned that they must take care of their diseased stock between this and the first of May on penalty of having the animals killed as fast as found off the reservation. On or shortly after the first of May, Dr. Christie will put the reservation in quarantine and will allow no stock of any kind to cross the line. If his ordeis are transgressed the property will be confiscated by the state and killed. It is the intention to take radical measures in order to stamp out the disease and prevent its spread. The Indian horses travel over the country spreading the mange right and left and it is impossible to cause the owners to take care of their property unless some stringent rules are adopted. Echo and Foster are under the ban and will have to hold a bathing bee in a short time to appease the wrath of the state stock inspectors. Governor Cham berlain wrote a personal letter to the deputy here a short time ago asking him to make an investigation of the stock in that vicinity as complaint bad' been made to him that there was a great deal of mange and scab among the cattle and horses of the vicinity. An examination of the stock was there fore made lust week, and it was found that in the vicinity of the two towns tbere were at least 1000 head of horses and 800 hoad of cattle affected with the mange. The owners of stock in that part of the country will be asked to dip their holdings in the near future and a determined stand will be taken to pre vent the future spread of tbo diacuse and to stamp out that which exists at this time. " . It is probable that a large corral and dipping tank will be built near Echo in some spot convenient to the majority of the stock owners who will be required to bring their cattle and horses there for treatment by the stock inspectors. It is estimated that it will cimt on an average about 30 cts. a head to dip, to which will be added a proportionate part of the cost of the corral and the tank. Murry Recaptured. ' Pendleton, April 28. Word has been sent to the ehe riflTa ofllce from Ritzville that J. J. Murry, who escaped from the i Ulcers there a day or two ago, has been recaptured and is now being held for the Pendleton ofllcers. Deputy Blakely will leave this evening for that place and, will bring his man back with him. MURRAY MAKES ESCAPE. Veterinary Surgeon Wanted for Giving ' Liquor to Gltheni Girl. Ritzville, Wash., April 27. Dr. D. J. Murray, veterinary surgeon, who has traveled through this part of the state for a number of years, was apprehended here yesterday on the charge of having given liquor to the 15 year old daughter of the Athena (Oregon) postmaster. He was followed during the past few days by Jack Craig, a brothor-in-law of the young girl, . who caught up with him here, when he had him arrested. Ha was turnod over by Sheriff Shorno , to Craig, and while in his charge made his escape about 4 o'clock this afternoon when everybody was aware that he was in custody. When he made his break away he was in the office of Zent, Lovell & Linn, cttorneys, where he went under the pretext of engaging counsel. His captor stood guard at the foot of the stairs, the office of the luw firm being over the bank. Murray left the build ing by the rear stairs instead of the front stairs, and it was a half hour or more afterward that his disappearance was known. The existence of the rear stairs to the building was uuknown to Craig. Dr. Murray has been in town for three or four days and gave intimation several times of some trouble. He said that he expected to leave for Japan before the end of the week. Dr. Murray is a heavily buiit man and very well known throughout this part of the country, and it is doubtful if be can make bis escape When last seen he was leaviug town down the railroad track headed towards Pataha. Necessary Number of Ticket Were Not Sold From Pendleton. Pendleton, April 27. The excursion from Pendleton to Milton, on account of the I. O. O. F. celebration Tuesday, was a financial failure because it was pot advertised, and the two local lodges will be out about 825 each as a result. The two lodges guaranteed the O. R. k N. company 150 tickets at 81.10 each. When ihe train , reached M ilton they were short about fifty passengers and will have to make up this amount. The Pendleton people turued out all right and as , well as was expected, but the lodges at Adams and Athena failed to make good, also Pilot Rock. Adams promised 20 people and sent only four. Pilot Rock promised 5 and sent one. There were two from Athena. Nevertheless those who went from Pendleton enjoyed the day, and' on their return reported a very pleasant outing. They were very profuse in their praise of the abundant hospitality of the good people of Milton and said they had been entertained most royally. There is no doubt that should Milton again adver tise such a picnic there would be twice the number go from' Pendleton, ss there are no finer entertainers iq the state than the people of Milton.
