Shutt returned from the Colum bia river country, where he has been for aeveral days helping in the investigation of diseased horses by the state veterin arian, Dr.- McLean. Arriving on the scene, Dr. McLean found the state of affairs somewhat different from what be expected, and telephoned Governor Chamberlain for instructions as to the method of procedure. The investiga tion brines out the fact that about 600 range ponies owned by the Columbia river Indians, who are camping on tne Columbia between Coyote and Stokes, are afflicted with mange in all stages. The territory covered by these horses is about 18 miles in width by 80 miles in length, and to round up these animals was no small task. The governor wired to the state veter inarian to kill some of the horses that were in the worst stages and to inform the Indians that they would be given until July to try to cure the afflicted animals, which can be accomplished by dipping in a solution of lime and sul phur. Acting upon the instructions, 10 of the horses were killed, but. not without pro tests from the Indians. However, the more intelligent Indians were made to understand the necessity of enforcing the law, and no trpuble was experienced. The Indians aereed to dip their horses and cure them, if . possible, and the matter will rest until the spring round un. when Dr. McLean will be present to again look after the condition of their horses. At the sprino roundup all horses found to be afflicted with the mange will be killed in pursuance of an order made bv the domestic animal commis sion. Not only are the horses owned by the Indians affected, but other range horses owned by stockmen have tue die ease. All will be treated alike. CUT HIGH JINKS. There is much excitement in itludent circles today, occasioned by the f.iti s coming to light concerning the "room smashing" incident of last Friday night Members of tne faculty used all efforts to keep the mutter quiet for the purpose of apprehending the guilty ones, and tittle wus known of the affair until toduy. From authentic sources today it is learned that when Professors Home and Coun of tho collego faculty returned home after midnight Friday night they found their bods taken apart and piled in tho middle of the floor, their papers scattered over the pile, and the crockery in the room smashed to splinters. Uoth professors were out that evening at a big party at the home of Professor Anderson to the faculty, trustees and alumni, and when they were away some of the boys in Hillings' Hull broke into their room and wrecked things gener ally. They got into the apartment by placing a ladder on the roof of the porch, and by toariog off the screen which covered the window, they effected their entrance. Everything breakable in the room was smashed and the bureau drawers emptied. It is said by the boys to be tho worst and most vicious job of "room sacking," as they call it, in the annuls of the institution. The door wus barricaded ou the in side. The professors arrived home at a very late hour and spent the rest of the uight fixing things up. They are very much cut up over the affair and eeora de termined to And the guilty parties. The boys will not talk much about the mutter or the reasons for the attack on the professors. It seems, hojvever, that the hitter are in charge of the discipline of the academy students who are in Billings' Hall, and that in the discharge of this duty have aroused considerable ill feeling on the purt of the boys, who regard them as pailers, and they im proved the opportunity Friday night to square things. Out they say that the particular griev ance now is against Professor Coan. They claim that when three girls skipped out of Reynold's Hall a tew nights ago, and had lunch down town after dark, contrary to rules, that Coan caught them in the candy parlors and then sat down and uto with them. After that he went and tattled to the faculty. This seems to be what the boys are particu larly incensed at, and what caused the trouble Friday night. , House Keeping: Rooms. GROCERS ORGANIZE ASSOCIATION ORGANIZED IN PENDLETON WEDNESDAY. Purpose of Organization Will Be to Conserve Interest and Protec : tion of County Grocers. II. O. Worthington, York Dell and Walter Ely, Athena grocery men, at tended a meeting of the grocery dealers of the county, in Pendleton Wednesday night. The purpose of the meeting was to perfect the organization of a county association for tbe mutual protection of grocery dealers, and also to promote the best interests of the retail grocery trade. The county association was organized and tbe following officers elected: Presi dent, J, B. DeSpain; vice president, Charles Rohrman; secretary, J)aq P. Smythe; treasurer, Sim Cully, of Weston. All the towns in the county will be in cluded in the association. Many towns were represented at the meeting, among them being Echo, Weston, Athena, AdamB, Helix, Pilot Rock, Alba and Dale. Each town will have its local organiza tion, from which a delegate will attend the monthly meeting of the county association. - Gives Facti About Advertising.
