The management of the Pendleton
Tribune, with commendable enterprise,
issued a 16-page New Years edition. An
immense amount of statistical and bio
graphical matter was published, and
typograplrically, the mechanical depart
ment shows up well, but there was
evidently something lacking in the jour
nalistic ability of the man. who was de
tailed from the Tribune fflce to look
after Athena's writeupi- So far as Ath
ena is concerned, the special edition is a
boomerang of inaccuracy., "Harry"
Schmitt is evidently s taken for Henry
Sclitmtt,, ;.one of our prosperous farm
ers, and Prof. M. L.'Watts is principal
of the Athena public schools; ; "Prof. A.
B. Watts, A. B" is unknown here,
r. "F. S. La Grove" is scheduled as
the cashier of the First National Bank
just when Mr. Le Grow vacated the po
sition is not . given. Just where the
Tribune man made the acquaintance of
Mr. T. J. "Kiry," we do not presume
to know, and the date of his election to
the vice-presidency of the bank is not
given. Miss "Stockland" may be con-:
ducting a photograph gallery in Athena,
but she does not advertise in the Pbess

Mr. Cleveland has Uved in the time of

The fact that Mr. Cleveland is the only

It is reported that the White Star line
will build a steuitiahip 755 feet long, or
thirty feet longer than the Baltic, which
is now the largest ship in the world.

there ia no demand on the Pacific for
steamers of the type built by Mr. Hill,
but the fact that even larger vessels are
becoming quite common on the Atlantic
would indicate thut there will be a route

with smaller returns on advertising ac

The war scare in the Far East is pro
ductive of some strange news in the
other East, and the pipe-dreamers who
keep in touch with the market are not
slow in sending it along. Among other
market gossip that has:dfifted west over
the wires within the past ' few days is a
Minneapolis report that large orders for
flour for shipment to Japan have been
placed in that city. One order for 100,
000 barrels in particular has been men
tioned for three successive days. Con
sidering the fact, says the Oregonian
that not a ton of space has been engaged
by the Minneapolis shippers on any f
the Oriental steamers, and the further
fact that Japan is refusing to buy flour,
even at reduced rates, the Minneapolis
report is not taken very seriously. It
may be that the shippers are figuring on
sending the flour by wireless telegraph,
but this is not believed to be a satisfac
tory solution of the mystery surrounding
the vast sales that have been made since
the enterprising dreamers began smok
ing up.
Harry Egbert, the Harney county
killer, will jump off at Salem January
29th if everything works right. He rode
horses, packed a gun and emulated Billy
the Kid in other ways. He has danced,
and will now settle with the orchestra.--Union
Republican. . '
The Hutchinson Gazette of Kansas is
out for "Hirst" for president, which
would indicate that some of the people
down that way read . neither the Hearst
papers nor much of anything else.'

legates to the national conventions, 'a
number of men may regret that their
booms were started too soon and that
they are completely forgotten.
If any particular person was responsi
ble for the Chicago disaster, there is
every prospect that person will be found
out and be made to . take the conso
