Fletcher and little daughter of Silverton, have been visit ing relatives at Sand Hollow during the holidays. - Mr. Fletcher is a brother of Mrs. E. H. Stone and Mrs. M. Wood ward. Special Session Change Meaning and Adds Ho Emergency Clause. The exemption law enacted by the special session, and which will take ef fect March 23," differs materially from the old law. Under the law as it stood prior to 1903, each householder was entitled to an exemption of $500 on his personal property. Subdivision 8, of section 3039, of the code, specifying what property shall be exempt from taxation, lias been amended so as to read as follows: "The following property, if owned or kept for use, by and for his or her family; household goods, furniture, and utensils, two cows, implements, appar atus, team, vehicle, harness, or library to enable any person to carry on his trade, occupation or profession by which such person earns his or her living to the amount of $300, the articles to be at lected by such householder; provided however, that when the assessed valua tion of the personal property above enu merate d shall amount to less than $300 when only such amount as the total of such property herein enumerated, shall be exempt from taxation." - . Big Land Business. . The quarter just closing in the Yakima land office will show a greater business done than was ever done before in the same length of time. Over 130,000 acres of land in the district have passed out of the hands of the government during that period. The tendency seemed to get bold of the land whether it had any per manent value or not and hold it for de velopment. A few years ago the greater part of -eastern Washington 1 was con sidered a desert, but now thousands of acres of these lands are producing, .good crops each year. There were seven homesteads. 39 timber claims, 14 cash sales, 29 desert land entries, 104 home stead entries, 13 final proofs, seven state selections and one railway selection, which amounted to 130,148 acres.
