WILL PACK MEAT SWIFT & CO TO ENTER NORTH WEST FIELD. Only Question of Donbt Ls How Soon tne company win Start Work. The Portland Oregonian says Swift 4 Co., meat packers, have an eye on Port land us the probable location of a new packing enterprise. That their inten tions are serious is indicated by the way their agents have been examining the livestock industry of the northwest, the possibilities of developing that industry, the opportunities offered by domestic and trans-Pacific land's relation to markets, and Port the northwest as the metropolitan city. When Lewis F. Swift, second vice president of bis company, was in Port land about a month ago, he dropped a hint that Portland is well located for a packing house enterprise in fact, that that city offered better inducementsithan Seattle There is no doubt that his company is inspecting the opportunities for a new enterprise there. That Swift it Co. actually contemplate entering the northwest field is quite evident. The only question of doubt is how soon the company will do so. W. J. Martin,- of San Francisco, ar rived recently to survey the field. He said he was land agont of the South San Francisco Land company, of which the Swifts are the head. This company es tablished a packing plant at the Bay City in 1890. The plant has done well and empolys about 300 men. A local committee was appointed to secure a site for the plant. This com mittee is composed of J. 0. Ainsworth, C. E. Ladd, J. Thorburn Ross and F. E. Beach. It has not done anything be cause of the unwillingness of landowners to contribute until they have been as sured that Ward means business. The opinion prevails that Ward's backers, if they have money for a plant, will come, subsidy or no subsidy. Ward wanted a bonus of $25,000 or the equivalent of that sum, and promised in return for that gift to invest $100,000. The belief is current that Ward's people, or the Swift people, as some citizens identify them, will soon make some move toward a project at Portland, and that they will perhaps acquire a site this year. But they will go about this business very quietly so as to prevent landowners from running up prices to extreme figures. Realty values will im mediately take a big jump whenever the . agents of the enterprise are discovered to be buying. Ward preferred the Kittredge tract, north of Portland, to all othors. This tract contains about 70 acres, but -it could be enlarged by moving the line of the Northern Pacific westward. Another proposed location is north of St. Johns, on the Columbia river, where several hundred acres are available. This land is owned by the P. T. Smith estate, and it. C. Judson, industrial agent of the O. II, & N. Co., has held an option on it for some time, it is reported that the op tion now has passed to other persons A packing plant together with stock yards would requiro about 150 acres of land. There has been some objection to giving the packing company control of i lie stockyards. Control by a local com puny would be more to the' liking of I'ortland interests. Under eucu an arrangement all packing companies would enjoy the same advantages, and there would be no discrimination against enterprises already in existence. A FIRST-CLASS SHOW. ICIoctrleal Production of the Ureut Phi lon Play. Of Flemming Bros, electrical picture production, which will be given at the opera house Saturday evening under the auspices of tho Epworth League, the following from the Marysvillo (Calif.) Globe will be of interest: The. Marysville Globe, without hesi tation or equivocation ot any kind, wishes to add its mite to the unqualified praise that Flemming Bros. Big Electric Show is receiving on all sides. That company showed at the opora house lust Saturday night, and it is not putting it t to strongly to say that the big audience went home delighted with the show. Of course, everybody has Been a moving picture show, but you must remember that there are moving picture machines and then r-guia, moving picture ma chines. There's just as much difference between the shows produced as there is between the outfits producing the shows. Fleming Bros, pictures are of exception ally large Bize, wonderfully distinct, every figure standing out upon the sheet and "that flicker," the bane of moving pictures, is conspicuous by its absence. The subjects treated are many and varied, that ot the "Passion Play" alone being worth twice the price of admission Their illustrated songs excel anything ever seen in the town; "A Picture no Artist can Paint" and "The Tie That Binds," especially receiving the applause ot the audience. Should Fleming Bros ever come this way again, and we hope they will, they will find Marysville's latch string out and a cordial welcome ready for them. Poland China Hog. NO FLOUR COMBINE CONSOLIDATION OF COAST CON . CERN3 ABANDONED- Eastern Money Lenders Turned Down the Pacific Coast lim ing Proposition. The promoters of the plan to con soli date the more important Pacific Coast flouring mills and form one of the larg est of the coast industrial corporations have abandoned the project for the pres ent. If anything further is done with the deal it will not be undertaken for at least ten months, and the scheme may be laid aside for good. The condition of the money market, especially in New, York, killed the flour mill deal. The moneyed men of New York are unable at present to take up no new and outside scheme and have only turned down the project for that reason. Had it been presented to them six months earlier it is believed that the scheme would have been successful. T. B. ' ilcox, president of the Port land Flouring Mill company, has re turned from New York. "Hot Time in the Old Town." On May 1st the O. The greatest dunger from colds and grip is their resulting in pneumonia. If reasouullo care is used, however, and Chamberlain's Cough Remedy taken, all danger will be avoided. Among the tens of thousands who have used this remedy for these diseases we have yet to learn of a single case having resulted in pneumonia, which shows conclusively that it is a certain preventative of that dangerous disease. It will cure a cold or an attack of the grip in less time than any other treatment. It is pleasant and safe to take. For sale by G. C Osburn. llot for California.
