The troup passed through Athena Monday on the east bound train for Walla Walla. - yGeorge M. Froome and Mrs. Olive Larks were united in marriage at Pen dleton Sunday evening, Rev. G. W. Rigby officiating. W. T. Rigby and J. Clove have pur chased the Baltezore foundry in Pendle ton and will manufacture their combine harvesters there. The Knights of Pythias of. The colt is not two years old but shows up some very good points. , Speaking of climate the Walla Walla Union reports men skating in their shirt sleeves, while buttercups fringe the edge of the skating pond. Attorney Will M, Peterson has for sale the W. II . Hawes residence. This is a most desirable property, and will be sold at a reasonable price. , Blizzards east of the Rocky mountains have made belated train connections with the result that mails have been several hours behind time. The League social and entertainment at the M. E. Church Saturday evening was well attended, and by all present was pronounced a success. Mr. Haligus and Dean Tatum, of the new implement firm of Kunkle & Co., are engaged in setting up farm machine ry at the Hawes stand this. week. pOt. J. Gillis has purchased 400 acres of timber land on the mountain east of town. The land was purchased from John Davison, the consideration being $1,500. . . ' si The old building has been' moved from the corner of Main and Second streets and preparations will soon be in order for excavation of N. A. Miller's new brick, - - East Oregonian: George W. Lieu- alien, of Athena, is in the city. He has in 150 acres of wheat, whioh is looking fine, as is all the wheat in that neigh borhood. R. J. Boddy says he knows the per son who helped himself to a couple of Wrenches from the hay press west of town. Unless they are returned trouble will follow. . ' , " V C. H. Taylor, one of the proprietors of The Fair Store in Weston, and MiBS Ollie Morgan, a popular young lady of that city, were united in marriage Wednesday. . George Gross this week purchased the house and lot ad joining his residence property on the west. The transfer was completed Tuesday and was frcm James Smith and wife of Elgin. - The system of six Doran gasoline lamps is now installed in the new church. The building is about as light by night as by day. The workmen are very busy getting it ready for service Satur day night. " The Eagle says the Milton people were pleased with the part taken by the Athena band in the recent old fiddlers' contest and. concert. Over 300 people attended the entertainment in the new opera house. Henry P, Schilds, of Walla Walla, has purchased the Albeit bakery in this city. Mr. ? Schilds, ' who is an expert baker, is now in possession and the Alheit Bros, are conducting' their-Walla Walla establishment. ' Sister Paphunita, aged 37, died at the mission on the reservation Sunday morning of heart trouble. She was a native of Ireland; and for 13 years ever since its founding had been a seamstress at the mission. ; Milton Eagle: The barn on Mrs. D, E. George's place below . town was burned Tuesday evening. The fire was set by two small boys, who thought it would be fun to see the blaze. The barn contained about i tons of hay. ; bCwilliam Winship, George Foster and Hied Hint returned Tuesday from Crook county where they went to locate land subject to homestead entry. They returned home disappointed, for all de sirable land had been filed on before they arrived there. ' President Gillis,- of ' the Umatilla County Caledonian Society, announces a meeting of the society on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 28. A full attendance of the members is desired, as matters of interest, including the holding of the annual picnic, will come before the meeting. Heppner Times: .Prof. D.'V. S. Reid, principal of the Heppner public school, returned last week from Portland where he has been in a hospital for treatment the past two or three weeks. His friends will be pleased to know that he is fully restored to health. f Peter Neshlerof Cold Spring claims to have the only mule that is permanent ly addicted to the use of tobacco. His mule he says will devour tobacco with equal relish of any man. ' The habit must necessarily be the result of bver civilization of the mule. . : Advance: The ladies of Adams have organized a society called the Benevo lent Aid Society. The object of the society as set,forth in their constitution is to assist in building up the various lines of church work and to help any that may be in need. The tobacco bumming propensities of the O. R. & N. depot force, from agent down, overshadows anything the Pbess man ever came in contact with. They have at least a dozen pipes that, when filled, leaves a small margin for your own. Wood ia not in it. " KThe few past days of fine weather caused the implement dealers to bring their plows and seeders to the front for display. Farmers, too, are beginning to take inventory of their needs in farm machinery and impkaitats. The pres ent season promises to be a busy one for dealers in farm machinery. East Oregonian: A. L. Swaggart of Athena, one of the leading hog raise rb of the county, was in town yesterday. Mr. Swaggart recently sold to W. Ad ams, the W. & C. R. railway agent at this place, four young pigs for $100. East Oregonian: Ed Weston, charged with horse stealing, was this afternoon arraigned before Judge Ellis. He took advantage of the extension of time the law allows him and his case will be call ed again in a few days. He will prob ably at that time have an attorney employed and may plead not guilty. Dr. S. M. Martin, of St. Louis, a lecturer and evangelist of national repu tation, will open a series of revival meet ings in the new Christian church build ing next Saturday evening, Mr. Martin is a strong man, a pleasant man and a man whose discourse you will greatly enjoy. Hear him by all means. next Friday night, Feb. 27, hose team No. 1, Athena fire department, will give their first annual ball. Posters and advertising matter announces the event. - Supper will be spread at the Athena Hotel, good music will be furn ished by Johnson's orchestra, the en tire company will act as floor committee and everybody is guaranteed a good time. : Weston Leader: Stevens Lodge, K. of P, .had some fun at its Wednesday evening's convention. The lodge goat was caparisoned in grotesque attire, masked, and led into the castle hall on mischief bent. It did several unutter able things to three innocent pilgrims, Sim J. Culley, R. E. Bralley and John Baker, who had been clamoring for the mysteries of the oriental rank until the goat determined to satisfy them to the full. : i Weston Leader: W, H. Fletcher and his accountant, J. C. Oldham, were in town Wednesday from the FletcherCo.'s sawmill on , Weston : mountain. They report "five foot of snow at the mill, making travel difficult. - The road to Weston has been kept open by the mill forces, but the Linkton mountain road is filled with snow drifts and wholly iui passable. Pendleton Tribune: M. F. Wright died at the pest house early yesterday morning. He had been sent there some days ago with a very bad case of small pox and his death was not a surprise He was a stranger in the : city and had no relatives in the state. On his person was found a note book which contained the name of a brother, W. E. Wright, residing at Maitland, Colorado. Mrs. J. D. Hawes has the matter in charge of obtaining as many names as possible of Athena . people who will be willing to attend the exhibition of master paintings at Pendleton next week. The exhibition is under the auspices of the Woman's Club of Pendleton. In Walla Walla ov9r 5000 people attended this ex hibition of art. The Pendleton Tribune reports that all f rieght trains of the O. R. & N. were annuled yesterday, and thiit no freight will move for a few days at least. The reason assigned by the railroad company is that fuel cannot be procured. The road is out of coal and it is impossible to obtain enough to keep the entire train schedule intact.
