He Would "shine" on the San Fran cisco Examiner. The condition of Main street is horrible, to say the least. What is to be done for its betterment, is 'the burning question of the hour. The columns of the Press are open for discussion. The increase of 12 9-10 per cent, in postal receipts in November of this year as compared with No vember of last year, taking fifty of the largest offices, is proof of the rising prosperity of the people. There is no better index of the state of the country than the post al revenue. Merchants of Pendleton and their clerks, have been discussing the advisability of closing their establishments at 6 o'clock in the evening, the months of January and February. It is argued that if all should close, the business of none would suffer in - consequence, and the strain upon the patients and good nature of the amiable people who serve the public would be greatly lessened, thus increas ing their cheerfulness when on duty. The grand contest between speculators in the Chicago wheat pit appears to have come to an end for the present, at least. Joseph Leiter is credited with hav ing won a victory. There are about 8,000,000 bushels of con tract wheat in the Chicago eleva tors and Leiter owns it all. Until Leiter begins to load wheat out of these elevators he cannot tell what kind of grain he is to get on his contracts and the prediction is made that there may yet be live lier times before the final end of the big fight. Commissioner of Pensions Evana has been giving some attention to a proposition whereby the services of pension attorneys engaged in the prosecution of claims before the office, may be dispensed with, and their work done by officials under government supervision. Informally, he has been discuss ing the matter with members of the house committee on invalids pensions, but ia not yet prepared to outline the details of his plan. The present system, he says, is wrongful, and should have been done away with long ago. The ICast Oregonian ia informed by the "Lantern," a weekly paper published in Portland, which does not hide its light, that "General II. B. Compson is spoken of in political circles as the strongest man the democratic party can put forth in the gubernatorial race, and it is a fact that he is being mentioned surprisingly often in relation to that position." Men tioned by whom? Himself and those he prompts. General Comp' eon has the office-seeking disease. He is not fit to be a candidate for governor or deserving of election. No man is who makes a business of feeding from the trough of office. East Oregonian. Without exception, the annual edition of the Portland Oregonian was the greatest in point of ex cellence and breadth of production of any paper, whether a special or regular edition, that has ever reached the Prksh exchange table. In this edition, the Ore gonian has, by far, excelled any previous effort on its part, and easily stands as a mark for other Coast papers to. aim at, for no special edition of ny paper wert of the Rocky mountains can be compared to it. It is entirely free from those towdy, sensational, smeared-lined engravings which explain nothing, and are merely used as space fillers, but which are generally used as the principal feature of special editions. On the contrary, the Portland paper is filled with good, wholesome, well written information, every line of it being devoted to the vast lesources and development of the Pacific Northwest. The engravings are superb, and magnificiently ill ustrates the edition. The Standard Oil Company, if a iecent report can be considered authentic, is likely to turn to the Pacific coast as the source for an increased proportion of its oil pro duct. It is stated that the coining season will see it operating exten sively on the coast and the oil prospects in Alaska will be devel oped. It seems probable that the oil supplies in Pennsylvania and neighboring states are showing such signs of exhaustion that the big trust is anxious to develop new ones, and in case it goes large ly into operation on the Pacific coast it is likely, with its through methods, to succeed in obtaining quantities of oil far beyond any thing so far dreamed of here. Pendleton papers publish a sensra llonnl story which is as interesting as a tale of romance. The Orlando in the story la a young man named Walter Lindsey, and the young woman sought after, but not captured, is Miss Minnie Thrasher, of Pendleton. On New Year's day voting Lindeey procured a marriage license, without consulting the jouug lady 'a wixhea in regard to the important matter nt all, ao It ia aaid. Nothing daunted, and like a knight of ye olden time, young Lindsey folio ed at break-neck speed. The couple were overtaken on the road near Adams, and, ao the story goea, the would-be bride groom's afflictions were smothered with a S.'O gold pit ce and a ring he had given the young lady sometime before. Miss Thrasber says she never consented to marry Lindsey, and that his attentions to her were distasteful and were never encouraged. The Surprise of All. At last the United States secret serv ice authorities have struck a lead to the source from which have come the thousands of almost perfect imitation half dollars circulated throughout the Pacific const. ' It is believed the counterfeits, which absolutely defy detection, except when under a powerful magnifying B'oas in the hands of a clever expert, were made by Chinese in their native land and brought to this country last summer by the members of the troupe of Chi nese actors who came to America to perform at the Atlanta exposition. Al most the entire troupe ia now in San Francisco, having been filling engage ments in Chinatown theaters) since re turning from the enst. It is estimated that $20,000 of the un authorized coins have been disposed of by the Chinese, and that "Little Pete," the Chinaman of recent racetrack-job notoriety, was back of the scheme. However, the $20,000 realized has not leen clear profit, as the coun terfeits contain almost the same amount of pure silver as do the regular ly minted half-dollars, but the extreme ly low price of silver bullion gave the counterfeiters a good profit. Bow She Managed to Win Everybody's Heart. , It was the tact and genuine kindli ness of Dolly Madison that made her one of the roost prominent of American women. Several episodes 'mentioned in Mrs. Goodwin's "Life of Dolly Madi poti" are significant of this. At one of her levees, her attention was drawn to a rustic visitor, a youth who was evidently suffering all the torments of embarrassment. He hod at last ven tured to help himself to a cup of cof fee, when Mrs. Madison walked up and addressed him. In the surprise of the moment, the lnd dropped the saucer and .strove to crowd the cupjnto his pocket. His tactful hostess took no notice of the accident, except to observe that in such n crowd no -one could avoid being jostled, and straightway turned the conversation to the boy's family, and ended by sending her regards to his excellent mother, and bidding the serv ant bring another cup of coffee. On another occasion two old ladies from I he country arrived at the white house while the family were still at break fast. To the surprise of the rural vis itors, the woman they had come to see appeared in a stuff dress of dark gray, protected by a large housewifely white npron, and with a linen kerchief pinned about her neck. Her. simplicity of manner and attire completely swept away their awe, and before departing one of them found courage to ask: "Perhaps you wouldn't, mind if I kissed you just to tell the folks about!" The traditions attached to this tree nre very numerous ami widespread, from the days of Tliny downward, says Notes and Queries. The fancy or belief that Judas hunj himself upon an cider tree, which will be found in Gerarde and many old herbalists and poets, Ber. Johnson among them, of course, gave 'iyyytme to the purplish-brown fungus C1 tfr0W8 on 'ta kar'c under the title oTJ lidos' ear," which Coles refers to as "Jewes Kare, called in Latin Fungus Kiimbicunus and Auricula judae." The plant appears to have had in England the old cognomen of pipe tree or bour tree, nud in Scotland bore tree, no doubt from the facility with which pipes or tubes for musical or other purposes huve always been mode by pushing nut the pith from the younger branches. Weseemtogetthe name from the Dutch holder with the German hohl under, sureau with the French, in Holland vlierboom, Italian snmbneo, Itussian busina, and Spanish sauco. The spiced wifie so almost universally made from the berries in country dis tricts, and the medicinal virtues at tributedand not without reason to vX'ry many preparations made from its bark, shoots, leaves and roots by coun try folk from time immemorial, and a proportion of which nre found in the pharmacopoeia, have doubtless made it n popular plant, and gathered around ! many of the niperstitions, tales, and even enhanced the virtues it is said to possess.
