SUBSCRIPTION RATES; Ona Year (in advance) $150 Six Months (in advance)-. .75 THE OFFICIAL CITY NEWSPAPER riiones Office, 97)1 ; Residence, 311 were refused We should bate to think that these things were done through disloyalty. We rather believe, in fact we are confident, that they are the result of thoughtlessness Surely there is no person in ibis community who would not deny himself or het self the one commodity for the great cause, when thousands upon thousands of the best young men of the country are offering their lives, if need be, for that same cause If there are such persons it is time tbey were found out and classified Of course, the instance» referred to are exceptions to the rule. Tbe rank and rile of the community 1» patriotic through and through. There is no excuse for being otherwise Dut these exceptions must be eliminated and the community made 100 per cent loyal. No matter how much white flour a family has on hand, nor when it was purchaseed, there is no excise fur using it. The food Adminis tration has requested that famille» return full sacks to their grocers, so that it can be shipped to France while the ships are available. Every loyal household will reply to this request. Many have aready done so. At any rate. WHITE BREAD MUST GO. ABOUT THE RECALL Thu paper has enlisted with the government in the cause of America for the period of the war........... .. WE HAVE FOOD SLACKERS. One would hardly believe it, but there are Women food slackers in this community. Some still call for white bread at the bakery and scold the baker because he la patriotic and lias volunteered not to bake unythiug but war bread; other» complain to tbe grocer» that they "can't eat that stuff " referring to substitutes Still others bake white bread in their homos. Why, it is reported that not long ago white bread sandwiches were donated to a Red Cross lunch eon, and in another instance white bread was offered at a food sale. In the eyes of those who are bending every effort to assist the Government in conserving tiie wheat for the soldiers In France, such things are deplorable. We do not wish to criticize those in charge of tii«s Red Cross affairs for using tiie sandwiches, nor the ladies who con ducted the food sale for selling tiie bread after it was baked, but those who furnished the while bread should be criticized and It would serve them right If their donations EAT CORX SAVE VHEAT By Mrs Robt. J. Burdette. The firing line is now in your kit chen. Knock out the breadline at your table. It has been said that the Revolu tionary War was won by men fed on hasty pudding, in other words, corn meal mush. Let it be written in his tory that tbe winning of the present war was made possible by the United States eating potatoes. Tbe manner of eating, tbe time of eating and even the kind of foodstuffs eaten are largely a matter of habit. We do not desire to break ourselves entirely of tbe habit of eating or life would not prove worth living, but it can be made to prove better worth living if we change some of the habits. Suppose we cure ourselves of the hand-eating habit and see if we do not consume less bread. If you were to put your bread and butter On your plate and eat it with a knife and fork it would reduce the amount of bread eaten at once. In some of the Oriental countries men carry strings of bright red wooden beads that are known as "Conversation beads." and they seem unable to talk unlosa they have them in their hands to play with and pass from one hand to the other. We seem to need something in our hands at table or we feel tbe meal is incomplete and that something is usually bread Forget this habit and save wheat. If you must continue the band eating habit, hold a hot potato. Although defeated in the primary election and automatically vacating the position of county commissioner on the first of the year, the mass meeting held at Coquille last Thurs day voted to recall Geo. J. Arm strong. That looks pretty much like kicking a man after he is down.
