While the big majority of us will enjoy the pleasures of the Holiday season, there will be some, especially among the little folks, not as fortunate as the rest. To see that these too are not forgotten, this organization has named the following committee to aid in the work of gath ering and distributing baskets, and receiving funds to aid in the work: Mrs. S. P. Pearce, Mrs. Geo. W. Moore, Mrs. C. !•’. Pape, Mrs. J. S. Hayes, Mrs. E. W. Schetter, Mrs. T. White, Mrs. G. Boak. Mrs. John Dickey, Mrs. 0. Eras er, Mrs. I,. W. Turnbull and Mrs. W. E. Craine. If it is your d sin- to see everyone happy on this day of all days, you may help by offer ing a basket or some funds with which to pro vide one. These gifts may be left with any one of the foregoing committee or at the store of J. I. Sidwell, which will be committee headqar- ters. T "Whnng" went a bottle of Three X liniment and 'Damfino” slid down he ways into the river like a dose of aator oil. It was the launching of the little -as boat owned by Dr. S. J. Mann which took place with due pomp and •eremony at 1» 00 o’clock this morn ng. She didn’t stop when striking the water but sped on up the river like a real honest to goodness speed boat, and now take* her place among the fastest of the Coquille rivet mosquito fleet. "Damfino" derived Its name from ths phrase, "damfino if she's goin to run or not,” so often applied t< 'his little craft since It was bull' more than a year ago. It Is equipped with an automobile engine and some how It bad never been adjusted just right to make it operate successfully until L. L. Jackson, formerly of th< Cape Blanco wirelees station and on- time a !'. S Navy electrician and ma ■ h'nlst took a hand at it During the past two weeks he put It in shape according to his theories, and, if th» trial trip this morning can be accept ed as a criterion, the little boat 1.- now a winner. Dr. Mann will use th- craft In making calls along the rive' during the winter season FOUR MILE The remark is frequently heard that the boys of the Coast Guard service certainly have a snap. Their job might be considered a snap be cause It is but often that they have real service to do. But, when duty Joe* call, they invariably demon- strata that the jeb Is not all pleas- are and that they are "there with the goods " The following news dis patch in connection with the submar ine accident the other day. appeared in the Oregonian: “To the heroism of surfman Oscar Swanson, of the Humbolt Coast Guard station, the twenty-three men from the H-3 probably owe their lives. Carried to the side of the sub- I uarine in a surf boat, Swanson leaped to the seawashed decks of the H-3 and finally made fast a line, after two . attempts by the exhausted crew of 'lie submarine had failed r "While more than 3000 persons' <tood along the shore in breathlees I ulence, Swanson took the first line ; which had been shot aboard the sub marine early in the day and made it , fast, but it parted. "A second line fell true acrosn'thei hull near the conning tower. On reaching for the line Swanson lost his > grip and a sea washed him over' board. But the husky viking, a giant n strength and courage, was not launted. Soon he was back aboard the submarine, and, while the crowd ishore cheered, he clung to the slip pery deck and made fast the line Soon the breeches buoy was rigged ind the work of rescue was begun. !ivery four minutes a man was land 'd, until at 6:15 the last man, Lieut- •nant Bogusch himself was landed."
