Fob President GROVER CLEVELAND, of New York. Fob Vice-Pbesedent THOMAS A. HENDRICKS, of Indiana. Fob Pbssidentiai. Electors W. D. FENTON, of YamhUl. L. B. ISON, of Baker. A. C. JONES, of Douglas. Public. Office, a Public Trust" ONE BY ONE, THE ROSES FALL. ' Republican papers have made the most of the espousal of Blaine and his gang by the - Irish World. No body paid any serious attention to all this, for the reason that no one expected that paper to support the Democratic ticket, besides, owing to the extraordinary tone of the sheet, its support was not particularly de sir eable. But when it was iterated and reiterated that O'Donovan Rossa was for the tattooed man, Democrats wondered if this indeed could be so? Below we let the great agitator speak for himself in this behalf. In his paper, the United Irishman, O'Dono van says: "All the Irish are going for the Republican party! So say the Irish papers that are bought up. We make bold to tell the Republican par ty the big mistake they make in sup posing that because they purchase a few newspapers they purchase the Irish vove. The Democrats are be coming united on the Presidential candidate, and it is very likely the Democrats will win this time. The country seems to be tired of the rule of the Republican party. During its twenty-four years of administra tration the character of the nation at home and abroad has fallen so low that the name of "American citizen" is a thing spoken of only with con tempt. " e have seen this Republican Ad ministration give England permision to arrest Irishmen in the city of New York and hold them in prison there because England "suspected" those Irishmen had committed some politi cal offence in Ireland. AVe have seen the Republican Administration in "Washington grant warrants for the arrest of 1. J. Sheridan in New York because England "suspected" that he was connected with the killing of two of. the English Governors in Ireland. AVo have seen the Republican Admin istration in Washington give the New York postoffice into the hands of English spies, that those spies may have the run of letters passing through the post. "We see England doing every thing she likes to do with this Republican Administration of ours, and naturally and instinctively we hnd ourselves in the humor to ar rest England's march through the channel's of the Nation's life. We have a lively recollection of ev ery administration of the Republi can party during the last six terms, and from the first term to the last term from the day Gen. Michael Corcoran wras courtmartialed for re fusing to'parade his regiment through the streets of New York in honor of England's Prince of Wales to the day the present President honored the Queen of England by presiding at the opening of Brooklyn Bridge on her birthday we have seen nothing but toadying to England and Eng lishmen. That salutation to the Eng lish flag at Yorktown looked like an invitation to England to lay her wires to take charge of the country again; it was an insult to the memory of our martyred dead; and for no other cause but because of that insult and outrage, no American with Irish blood or any other manly blood in his veins should vote for keeping in power a party who thus outrage the sacred mt mory of those who fought and fell for the fredom we enjoy. One can scarcely find a Republi can who will seriously deny that Blaine has always been a corruption ist and that the evidence that he pros tituted his position as Speaker of the House for private gain. This is a sorry commentary on the tendency of the times sure. a-Truthful picture. The Chicago Times (Independent), seriously discourses as below, con-, cerning the manner of men who are attracted to the enthusiastic support of Mr. Blaine, and the intelligent reader must pause and ask himself why it is thus ? The Times says : "Among the Republicans who are opposed to Mr. Blaine are none of the pot hunters' of the party. They are leading business men, prominent lawyers, clergymen, college professors, distinguished- writers, and careful students of history and the science of government. Some of these deserters from the Republican party are the ornaments of the intellectual life of the nation. Among them is not one notorious corruptionist, not one whose name is associated in the' public mind with questionable transactions; not one who has ever been suspected of complicity in schemes of plunder and jobbery. But the surviving mem bers of the whisky ring are zealous in their championship of the magnet ic man. The star-route contractors are, without exception, 'booming for him. The land grabbers and subsidy sharks, the contractors and lobbyists, and in fact the entire scurvy gang of jobbers and robbers who held high carnival during his incumbency of the Speakership, are among his warmest admirers, and are leaving nothing undone to promote his success. If nothing else were known to the dis credit of Mr. Blaine, the fact that af ter 'twenty years in Congress' he is surrounded by this motley array of mercenary adventurers would be suf ficient to render him a legitimate ob-. ject of of suspicion. Dorsey and Ro beson, and Spencer and Kellogg, and Keifer and J ay Hubbel, and 'Steve' Elkins and Clayton, and -Brady and Delano, and 'Dick' Herrington and the rest are for Blaine. They take great pride in his 'brilliancy,' and 'nerve, and 'audacity,' and should "he be elected to the Presidency they will look into the future with cheerful confidence. With Governor Cleveland the case is very difierent. He has been in pub lic life a comparatively short time, but he has succeeded in gaining the active enmity of every 'crooked' poli tician in the country. The jobbers who find in Blaine their ideal states man regard Cleveland with uncon cealed detestation and scorn. They neglect no opportunity to avow their conviction that he is unfit to be Presi dent, and that his election would be a national calamity. There must be some reason for all this, and a good one. Why does Mr, Blaine inspire the confidence of the jobbers, and why does Cleveland excite their aver sion? This is a question which hon est men, whose only concern is for pure government, ought to ask them selves."' bone-hunters:1 ' A circular, signed by A. E. Ford as chairman of ''Committee of arrange ments," was recently issued in Brook lyn, New York, purporting to repre sent the "Irish-American Indepen dents," and sent out inviting various Irishmen to be present at an "Inde pent" Irish blowout. One of the cir culars was sent to Mr. Luke O'Reilly, Jr., of No. 89 Broadway, Brooklyn, who wrote the following on a postal card and returned it to Mr. Ford: "I am not in sympathy with your so-called Irish-American independent movement first, because 70U are a gang of bone-hunters, strikers and political tramps attempting to trade on the innocence of a misrepresented people for the purpose of obtaining a little of the Republican soap; sec ond, because I sprung from a race that owes itsallegiance to the Dem ocratic party, and third, because the protection to American labor and American citizenship can be sacured only through the supremacy of Gro ver Cleveland over Mulligan-Blaine. The Republican telegraph is do ing its level best for Blaine. It describes his western trip down to the minutest detail, not even omitting to mention the exact hour of his breakfasting here and there, and whether in his room or the dining hall. The telegraph was subsidized a year in advance to boom Blaine, and is carrying its part of the con tract to the letter, in fact, without the telegraph he had had no boom. While probably nobody believes the stupid falsehood that "God, sav the Queen" was played at the Na tional Democratic Convention, every body knows that the British colors wer9 saluted at our Yorktown Cen tennial by order of James G Blaine, who, by virtue of then .being Secre tary of State, was chief manager of the exercises of the occasion. These Blaine fuglemen must credit the Irish with extremely short memories. The Chicago Weekly News Southwest Oregon Recorder For $2 50 a Year.
