I he greatest asset to the successful development of a city or commit nity is harmonious actions of its citizens. If all work with this great pur pose in view. 1 Lore is sure to be a wonderful result. If the people of Bandon work together in harmonious terms for the upbuilding of this city, we will continue to have the most prosperous city in this section of Oregon. It the whole of Coos county, yes, and Curry county, too, will ¡mil together, there will l>e greater development in all sections of southwest Oregon. Coos Bay cannot afford to try to promote her own interests at the ex pense of the Coquille valley, neither can this valley gain anything materi ally by belittling the resources and prospects of Coos Bay. Knocking and backbitting will injure both sections. The Coquille valley needs Coos Bay and Coos Bay needs the Coquille valley, and each should have its due. There can be a friendly rivalry for supremacy with out misrepresenting the interests of either. Bandon is the natural outlet for all products of the Coquille valley, and we should work to the end of making this the |x>rt of shipping and port of entry for cvery’hing in the valley, just as Coos Bay is the natural shipping point for everything on tint side of the divide. Ihc R ecorder has always advocated harmony in Coos county, at least ever since it has been under the present management, and it is our candid belief that this is the best method lor building up the entire county that could possibly be found. SNOW REPORTED IN THE EAST BOATS ARRIVE AND DEPART NUMBER 47 MAY START BASKET SPLINT FACTORY BANDON PEOPLE HEAR BOTH SiDES Portland Basket and Handle Capí. Dan Morgan Smith and Company Wants to Rev. E. Wallace Spread Out. Shepard. c. D. Edwards, representing the Portland Basket and Handle Co. is in Bandon looking over the field and sizing up the situation. Mr. Ed wards says his factory is vet y much in need of more material, and he is looking for a place when» he can get it in quantities sufficient to be ot some value, and where shipping facil ities are good anil convenient. Mr. Edwards is very favorably impressed with conditions at Bandon, and says this is the first place he has found that will meet the require ments of his company. He has ex amined conditions in every port and town north of Bandon. His idea is to find a place where the splints for baskets can be made up and then shipped to Portland where the baskets and handles will be finished up. This would add another nice industry to Bandon, and our people should do something to encourage the company to come this way. ‘ The material most wanted by the Portland Basket and Handle Co. is spruce, which we have in abundant quantités on the Coquille river, as is evidenced by the fact that spruce lumber is being shipped out to the North Bend Box factory, to Gray’s Harbor, and to ether places. What we want in Bandon is industries that will use up the spruce here, and this is an opportunity to get one such in dustry. Of course Mr. Edwards has noth ing definite to give out at this time, as he is only on ajour of inspection, but it is tip to Bandon people to be on the Alert and get the industry if possible. Bindon j copie had the privilege of hearing both sides of the prohibi tion question discussed, Sunday and Monday nights. On Sunday night. Capt. Dan Morgan Smith, for the Greater Cregon Home Rule Associ ation, delivered an address on the subject ‘Prohibition is Morally Wrong.” Mr. Smith is recognized as a great lawyer and orator, ami presented his side of the subject in a very forceful manner. Then, on Monday night, Rev. Shepard, from the same platform, gave a very able answer to all of the arguments of Mr. Smith. 5 r. Shepard’s subject was “Is Prohibition Immoral?” and he handled the same with great skill and put up a most convincing ar gument. Time and space forbids a review of the addresses, but those who heard them could not help but be impressed with the fact that there are two sides to the question, the same as to all others.
