In line with recent conferences with Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, and other Government officials, Mark S. Mat thews, President of the United States Junior Chamber of Com- meref has announced plans of bis Board of Directors to gear the ac tivities of the organization into the needs of national defense and v re- jaredness. The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce, which was one of the first organisations to ■irge compulsory military training, Is probably the only national group In tho country having the same age limits as the Selective Service Proclamation now lo operation. Every one of the 160,000 young men who are members of It* 1,000 af filiated Junior Chambers of Com merce throughout the country are from twenty-on« to thirty-five. Throe-Point Program A three-point program has been set up at the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce headquarters In Chicago and will entail: 1, The dissemination o f I n f o r m a t i o n through local organisations to all men of draft age and relating to all matters on compulsory military service; 2, The training of aviators through establishment of Flying Cadet recruiting programs, Junior Chamber of Commerce flying club#, and CAA courses under JCC spon sorship; and, 3, Establishment of local schools and courses for the training of skilled workers essen tial to the national defense pro gram, mechanics, welders, ma chinists, etc. Knox Commend« Commenting on the program dur Ing their conference. Secretary Knox said to Mr. Matthews, “ Your far-sighted Interest ia obvious in your early demand for compulsory military training- 1 congratulate' you on your stand here today and ask that you assure your Board of Directors of the gratitude of the! United States Navy.” Though the membership of the Junior Chamber of Commerce falls 100% within the age limits of Selective Service, Mr.’ Matthews pointed out that they do not look upon themselves as a spe cial group having any special privi lege.
