K y ne M anager 1932 Vacation and Tour.nit Season Thib ia the tim e o f y ea r when moat people begin to plan lon g or ahort trips by autom obile. The touring fan w ill seek the out-of- the-w ay road in order to discover fo r hAnself the m ore beautiful spots o f Nature. This is particular ly true if a person is planning to camp out. In preparation fo r a trip o f this kind, careful forethough t is usually given to the necessary spare parts o f the car. the kind o f cloth in g to take along, or the fis h in g equip ment needed; but often little thought is given to the safeguard- o f one's health on the trip. This latter point cannot be too stron gly emphasized, because, on such a trip liv in g conditions are often changed so much by expo sure to ¡«clem en t w eath er, lack o f sleep, irregu lar hours and other factors, that the body m ay be come more susceptible to attack from disease than it would be under the norm al home conditions Another hazard which m igh t a f fe ct the autom obile tr a v e lle r is the roadside d rin king w a ter supply. On a hot and dusty d rive a drink o f cool w a ter fro m “ The Old Oaken Bucket’’ type o f w ell,, looks a ttra c tive, but from a san itary view point such open and exposed w a te r sup plies a re the ones to be avoided. C arefu l attention should be g iv en to the scoirce o f the m ilk sup ply, p articularly i f there are chil dren in the party. A sw im m ing place shoud be selected w ith care also, in order to avoid the use o f streams c a rryin g sew age fro m com munities located up stream from the camp. I f your vacation takes you into localities infested w ith malaria bearing mosquitoes, m osquito net tin g should be included in your luggage. T h erefore it devolves upon the tourist him self to see that all san itary precautions are taken to safeguard his health w h ile on a vacation. The Story o f the K id M ho M ade Good (A F a b le) Once upon a T im e th ere w ere Three Sons in C ollege. A n d a fte r a sufficient number o f Y ea rs they all Commenced. A f t e r P re x y had said his Piece and the Sheepskins had been dished out, and the Boys had rid them selves o f th eir M on key H ats, they a ll adjourned to the C ollege H angout f o r a couple o f Quick Ones. “ W ell, it looks to me like a Tough W o rld !’’ w ailed one o f the Boys. “ I ’ m g o in g Hom e, Sw eet Home and work fo r the Old Man T h ere’s no sense in m y sta rtin g fro m the Bottom som ewhere else w-hen the P ater's r o llin g in G ra v y ! ’ So he packed his Saxophone and his Book and started fo r Home. “ It ’s too Soon to dust o ff the Office Chair,’ ' com plained “the Se cond Y ou n g Hopeful. “ I ’m g o in g to take the next F lo a tin g B ar fo r the Other Side, g e t m e a H igh er Education in some fo re ig n School, and let Dad charge R to P rofit and Loss.’' So he sent a F a re well L etter to M ary, carbon Copies to Sally, Flo, G e rty and Ruth, and sailed fo r E u rop e Twenty-Second Installment “ You're an even dirtier Uttle rat than I gave you credit far being. So unless I give you ulnety thou- sand dollars you will put the ex perts from the Internal rerenne de partment on the trail o f the estate, and they'll collect so much taxes Illegally withheld— " “ They’U fine the estate—you know they will.” Bunker screamed. “ They can't do anything to your uncle, but they can fine his estate up to oue hundred per cent They won't have any pity on you." “They ought to fine the estate. I would If 1 were the collector o f In ternal revenue. Now look here. Hunker—I ought to go to the col lector o f Internal revenue, turn you over to him and have blm put you In Jail.” “ You can’t You can’t prove anything, and I've got those books hidden where nobody can find them. Better a.-cept my proposi tion. You'll get out with some thing, then I f you won’t play the game I’ll see to It that you got out with exactly what I get— nothing!" “ You forget that you are an ac cessory before the fact. In the eyes o f the law you have commit ted a felony by aiding and abetting my uncle to defraud the govern ment.” “ I know But when I turn state's evidence they won’t do anything to me.” Blinker laughed mirthlesaly. ’T h a t's what Immunity haths are for. They pay me fo r my Informa tion." “ Bunker, you re loathsome. Get ont o f my room Quick I don’t tike to rough-house a little old man like you. but If you're still stand ing there leering triumphantly at me thirty seconds from now H I manhandle you. Scat, you pole cat !“ Bellowing R.inker's unceremonious departure. Elmer Clarke sat down to do gome solid tbinklng. He had need to. for If Bunker’s threat should not prove to he an Idle one. he was liable to find him self In a most unenviable position. “ Well, one thing Is certain," he ledded. “ I f the collector o f Inter nal revenue, egged on by Bunker, should levy on the total residue o f the estate. I'll he back, financially, where 1 was before Uncle Hiram died but with this exception— I ’ll tie ont o f a Job W ell, I ’ll soon find another. My health Is A-oue again, so what the devil do I care for the «lings and arrows o f outrageous fortune, provided I do not have to wait too long to marry N ellie? “ Why. I almost forgot that I am mayor. I have got a Job. after all. and It pays me one hundred dol lars a month Well. I've existed on less Elmer, old settler, you're not licked at all. but oh. boy. when you get hack to Pllarcltos your sense o f humor Is certainly going to be tested I Th ey're going to tell this Joke on you while anybody lives to remember It. “ Yes. Indeed. Elmer Clarke, you’ re right 1 P ilardtos Isn’t going to be s pleasant place for you to live In herenfter, but— you’re go ing to live there because N ellie Uve* there, because you’re the mayor and also a high school trustee, and you can't resign from either Job Just because you’ re a public Joke. That would be haul ing down your flag, which Is alien to your nature— beside* which. It would be the very finest way o f los ing Nellie. Guess I'll sing the na tional anthem o f Slam 1“ He decided to await develop ments. It occurred to him that if Bunker really had such a club to swing he would have swung It most profitably on U n de Hiram before the latter departed for that myste rious land where Income taxes are not. He certainly would no« awing It nntil he had collected his own legacy from the estate, for Bunker was too cunning to make such a maladroit move. Perhaps Ms threat had been a monumental bluff. “ I think this Is a matter I should take up with McPeake," he decid “ M y Dad wouldn’t hire me i f I were anyone else,’ ’ th ought the Third, “ so th ere’s no use G ypp in g him. I confess I'm afraid o f him." " W e ll Pm not. nnd the first day he comes In here I'll have him on the carpet and shake him down I'll w rite you the results o f my Inquisition." So Elmer went on to New York. Five weeks later McPeake wrote him that the real estate had been sold, that all o f the debts o f the estate had been paid and that a final decree o f distribution had keen signed by the Judge o f the prohate court. McPeake added that Elm er’s share o f the estate would amount to approximately *218.000 Immediately upon receipt o f this Information Elmer came on to Mus catine and the day after hls arrival he was to meet McPeake In the latter's office. “ Not a peep out o f our frleod Bunker." he announced, coming at once to the subject closest to Elmer's heart. " I had him In my office and gave him a bad half hour, but could not get any admission from him. He talked vaguely o f things he conld do. but seemed disinclined to do them. I think he was bluffing.” "H as he received hls legacy, Mr. M cPeake r “ I handed him hls check ten minutes ago. Thought I might at well get rid o f him before you ar rived."
