GEORGES E N E S C O TO R E E D Y IL L E * M A N IS BE G U E S T ARTIST K IL L E D IN A C C ID E N T A Brahms and Beethoven, with Georges Eneaco as the guest artist, will comprise the bulk o f the pro gram for the January 11 concert o f the Portland Symphony Orchestra. The Beethoven concerto has been chosen fo r the appearance with the orchestra o f the famous Roumanian violinist, and Willem van Hoogstra- ten, conductor of the orchestra, de cided that Brahms' third symphony should be given on the same pro gram. I* has been eight years since Enesco has appeared in Portland, and during that time he has denn- itely emerged from the ranks of “ good violinists’’, and established himself as a master o f the instru ment. His reputation, already world wide, is constantly growing, and Portland admirers o f violin mastery will await his appearance eagerly. Enesco has played the violin since the age o f five, and at seven was a student at the Vienna conserva tory, which ordinarily does not ac cept any but adult students, or at least youths nearing their majority But Enesco won awards at the age o f 11 both fo r his playing and his composition. Before he » > twenty, he had an entire program presented at Paris, where he was studying at the time. The Brahms symphony in F major has been played before in Portland, and in addition portions o f the work have been presented at Vienna in December, 1883, with Hans Rich ter conducting, and was a triumph fo r the composer. London heard the symphony in 1884, while in Novem ber o f the same year, it was first played in N ew York. Tickets are on sale at J. K. Gill’s. As usual, the concert will be at the auditorium, starting at 8:30. A brand new dollar was sent re cently to the young artist’s teacher Miss Rets Wilkins, who presented it to Helen. The subject o f the poster was “ Have something hot for lunch” and shows a train of fresh vegetables going up an incline preparatory to being dumped into a large kettle o f soup to make a hot, nourishing meal for st-hoolchil dren. Such a meal is recommended for school rhikiren every day o f the school year to help improve their health.
