I t begins in the old M o ra v ia n co m m u n ity o f Salem in O ctober when the wom en s ta rt m a k in g the thousands o f candles to be used in M o ra v ia n churches throu gh ou t the south a t th e ir C h ris t m as love feasts. I t continues u n til J a n u a ry 6, 400 m ile s aw ay a t R odanthe on the O uter Banks, where a few old- tim e rs s till observe the O ld C h ris t mas, and even u n til J a n u a ry 7 am ong Russian and U k ra in ia n col onists near W ilm in g to n , who s till go by the G re g o ria n calendar. In old Salem the m a k in g of C h ristm as candles has become a l m ost a ritu a lis tic p a rt o f the h o li days. F o r m onths the w o rke rs m eet in the B roth ers House, b u ilt in 1769 as a home fo r the sin gle m en of the c o m m u n ity. Huge cakes o f beeswax are m e lt ed—1 2 ^ pounds of ta llo w to 50 pounds o f wax.
