Bulletin) | Possibility th at the Jam es Farm Home for spastic boys, located at Bridgeview, a short distance from Cave Junction, will be given finan cial assistance for an expanded program by the N ational Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc., has been voiced by W. Theron Jones, field secretary of the organ ization. The Jam es Home was started last F ebruary and now cares for 12 boys ranging in age from 5 to 16. P resent facilities can care for between 24 and 34 boys, it is re ported. If approval of the state health departm ent, now being sought, is placed on the home, plans call for fu rth e r installation I of equipm ent to aid in physical and occupational therapy. E. Jam es at Bridgeview. A new- building is in final stages of com pletion. One large first flo o r wing has been constructed to serve as class and recreational room. Sec ond floor of the building will be used as a dorm itory as soon as proper fire escapes are installed. The program calls fo r aonstruction of a large swimming pool next sum m er, a)so a large concrete patio around the entire house to be used for skating and other recre ational purposes. Mrs. Jam es relates th a t she be came interested in conducting such a home some seven years ago when a child specialist tre a tin g her own son noted the progress the boy was m aking under her care and urged her to take a nine-year-old boy to train. The sum received from the parents of this boy for his care form ed the nucleus for the Jam es Farm Home. The boy, now 16, has improved sufficiently to be put in charge of chickens on the farm and is planning to specialize in poultry raising. One of the fundam ental princi ples underlying tra in in g a t the farm , according to Mrs. Jam es, is to build up each y o ungster’s con fidence and self-reliance. Each boy helps the others, and in the home atm osphere progress is of ten rem arkable. The sta te de partm en t of special education provides a teacher, Mrs. Lucius Robinson, who conducts regular classes. School work is conducted on the same hourly basis as regu lar schools, the main difference being th a t pupils here are not graded.
